Received my card during lunch and installed it. The card is dead quiet, very pleased about that. Not pleased about the coil whine under full load though. While playing games like Diablo 3 I can't hear a thing but when running Heaven bench it's whining like a newborn child...

EVGA is offering to step-up to the FTW edition which I just did. I'll have to wait a few months in queue though but nothing too bad. I'll continue to use my 970 SSC ACX 2.0 and see if I can find a way to reduce the whine in a "non warranty cancelling" manner

Unfortunately the FTW edition has the same exact PCB with 4+2 phase design.

My Gigabyte 980 has some coil whine too though so you are not the only one. My ASIC is 65.8% and every card that I have owned with a low ASIC score had coil whine.

Ah, stocking situation seems to have improved considerably @ Newegg. MSI Gaming, Gigabyte, "limit per customer 5 cards".

A quick question: since all 980 are still reference design to they all have the same power target, meaning are they all "limited" the same way when overclocking?

I will try a few things before asking for a RMA.

Yesterday I tried Borderlands 2 with the in-game frame limiter set to 60 FPS (not 22-62 FPS or any other options) and no whine at all.

I'll have to test this further. I also know that EVGA Precision X software as a frame limiter you can force/activate, i'll test that soon.

I heard a lot of people that got almost completely rid of coil whine with frame limiting and V-Sync...maybe that's the clue to it all!

I'm too curious to just RMA the card and hope to get one free of coil whine. I must try to fix this with everything I got before sending it back. Because even though it's a "cheap EVGA" i'm really impressed by the quietness of the fan and the temps the card is running at.

now I am driving myself nuts. I already ordered an Asus reference 980 from Amazon but it has not shipped yet. today I see the Asus 980 Strix on Newegg so I grab that. the reference card uses WAY less power and the clock difference is only around 60 mhz. the Strix will certainly oc a bit higher but it seems many reference cards are not too far off. the reference cards do amazing for their modest cooler and phase count. also down the road I am thinking the reference card may be easier to sell since many will upgrade to SLI and its better suited. what to keep?

and even though the reference card form Amazon has not even shipped the charge went through on my bank card yesterday morning. of course I can still cancel right now but makes me mad as Amazon says they only charge when they ship an item. now if I open the Strix card from Newegg then its mine or I have to replace with same as that is their policy on the those cards. luckily my 970 has a standard vga return policy.

Need your opinions gentlemen as I have two EVGA 970 SC cards coming in on Monday. "Reference" blower style.

However after some Googling, I'm reading now that the blower EVGA uses is of a poor quality and had issues with the 700-series cards. Unfortunately when it comes to blower cards, EVGA and PNY were my only two options.

Should I return these and get something else? Is the information I'm reading overhyped nonsense? My reasoning for buying blower style cards to begin with is due to the close-quartered SLI configuration in my case.

Another option is an aftermarket cooler, any suggestions?

I've got 1.5Ghz boost and 8000Mhz on the memory at the moment, still tweaking. Gpu hasn't cracked 70C yet.

Having issue with Asus GTX 980 on Gigabyte x79 G1 board. Boot is super slow like it doesn't recognize GPU maybe for 45 secs. When I finally get to windows it shows up ok and drivers loaded. Just to make sure not a card issue installed on a a Foxconn H97M board and no issues. Anyone have any idea what's maybe causing a long delay?

I have a ZOTAC ZT-90202-10P GeForce GTX 980 AMP! Omega Edition on the way. Looks like it should be a quiet card.
