LOL@V-SYNC!!! Who seriously plays video games with V-sync enabled in 2014??? What a joke!!!

Everyone who does, and has before. AMD and Nvidia are even competing with technologies to make v-sync work with LCDs the way it should have been for years, and many gamers are having no issues shelling out $800 for a buggy TN monitor that wasn't ready to market for the privilege to use of such technology. V-sync's usefulness has not changed since the late 90s, when we first started needing it.

how could a 970 get too hot to cause a game to freeze. unless your fan is broken there is no normal circumstance in the world that would have a 970 hitting those kind of temps. and you might want to actually list the 970 that you have...

it will be logged in afterburner or precision. or you could just use gpuz in a pinch if you dont have either of those programs installed.

a very high quality 500 watt psu is fine for 2500k and 970.

a pc can just start shutting down with a faulty psu especially with any load.

Depends on model. Some no, some sort of, some yes. If it's not a Basic Power, or Basiq, it aught to be fine. Neo Power, Neo Eco, EarthWatts, etc..

yeah and age could be a factor too though or it could just be defective.

There is a fairly big problem with the 344.48 drivers in older games. All DirectX 8 games are broken as far as I can tell. The games load up and I can hear the menu sounds but there is just a black screen. These games do work on XP with the same card and driver, and used to work on 8.1 on my old 280 with the 337.88 drivers. The driver even shut down and recovered once after I closed a game. I filled out a support ticket about it on the nvidia site. Not sure if they respond to those, but it's worth a try.

I get this issue with Deus Ex IW, Thief 3, Freelancer, Aquanox, Revolt, Rollcage Stage 2, Ballistics and a few others. Compatibility mode doesn't work. It seems to be related to DX8, as that is only thing these games have in common. I'll need to check if my DirectX has some problem, but I was playing some of these pretty recently on my old card and they worked fine.

Thanks for mentioning Deux Ex - IW. Just tried it out on my system again. Runs great. I installed the widescreen patch to run it at 2560x1440. I even applied SLI bits to the game profile through Inspector and it even runs in SLI too. Not that it needs it. I just wanted to see if it worked. It used all 4 GPUs. Had to add "DX2Main.exe" to the profile though.

I looked into this further and found that the problem is actually with the coverage sampling AA modes (16xQ, 32x, etc.) together with DX8, which I was using on most of those games. The games work properly if I switch them to an AA mode that does not use coverage samples. I'm going to stick with 8xQ and the SGSS modes until they fix this.

Wanted to give a shout-out to anyone who has the non-ACX EVGA 970s. I can confirm the EK-FC670 GTX waterblock fits PERFECTLY. The EK back-plate fits well too.

Just a friendly PSA if you want to WC and need a quick, no fab solution.
