yup im fairly sure because even he 780GTX required 2 different blocks.
One for the original, and the other for the Ti... which then it was near exact the same card.
Also if it was a perfect match fit, im fairly sure eK would sell the same block with the added compatibility saying 780 / 980.
Instead the 980 has its own block.
Its like the 7800GT block.... the 8800GT was esentially the same card, yet there was slight difference in height of mosfets or a added mosfet which made the block invalid in mounting.
As far as fitting the mounts it does seem the 780 blocks would work, that being said the VRAM covers a larger area/there's more on the 980 than the 780 so the cooling would be a tad weird...
In any case I'm excited to see what the mass OCing average turns out to be on the Maxwell cards, personally going to wait for the big Maxwell cards to come out before really upgrading (or picking up a really cheap 780 to SLI maybe). I really do need to get around to playing with the unlocked BIOS stuff around for my card and see how hard I can push this thing.
