The synthetics are pretty easy to pass with an otherwise unstable overclock. I find the built-in benchmarks for Tomb Raider and Metro Last Light to be really good at exposing an unstable overclock. Also, playing 15 minutes of Crysis 3 will crash an unstable GPU overclock pretty easily.
Those 3 games are exactly what I use for GPU testing. Crysis 3 is also a good CPU tester.

Sweet. Won't even bother dling a synthetic bench then.

Those are the games I've been trying too coincidentally. And also Shadow of Mordor. Need to revisit that once the HD texture pack dl's.

Thanks.

do not use physx in Metro though as you will actually get a better load with it off.

Im not sure if Im the only one but out of all the synthetics I find heaven benchmark pretty good at exposing bad/unstable overclocks. Hasn't failed me yet although testing in-game is also good!

Rock, I would also use MSI AB OSD to check for any throttling and to monitor GPU temps while gaming testing your overclocks.

Same here using the extreme preset.

Unigine Heaven is pretty good. Max out the settings and crank up the tessellation distance. Crysis 3 and Metro 2033 / Last Light Redux are good.

I find far cry 3 and crysis 3 to be the best stability testers out of all games. Crysis will develop speckles in cloth with a seemingly otherwise stable over clock where as far cry 3 will have flashes in the water.

Cool, did not know.

Yea I have been using it to watch temps and usage. Didn't think about the throttling tho. What do you watch for throttling, auto reduction of core clock or something else?

I'll dl Heaven benchmark too. Thought it would be bigger, what's another 250mb when I've used well over 100gb on my cell data this month.

Also, PSA. Disconnect your video cables BEFORE removing a video card. Pretty sure I fubared the mini hdmi port on one of my gtx 580s. Been about 4 years since I've removed a card lol.

Core clock and of course you can also log it but I like also to watch live it while gaming/testing myself.

One other thing I opened my Heaven and here are the exact settings to use.

When you heaven use the following settings.

Tessellation- Extreme
Preset-Custom
Full Screen-check the box
Resolution - set your resolution
Anti -Aliasing x8

Just so you know you will not have to use MSI AB OSD in Heaven for clocks and temps Heaven will show clocks and temps on screen while running.

Yea it throttled slightly. Went from 1516mhz to 1504mhz running Metro LL bench. Max temp was 72 gpu1 and 68 gpu2. Still never heard the fans, awesome. My case air cooling is pretty crappy too, cpu and mb are water cooled.

Will try Heaven on the weekend. Time to play some games without lowering settings finally. At least not much .

Thanks.

NP, also just so you know (in case you don't) there will be two core clock settings in MSI AB settings to mark with a check since your running SLI to monitor both GPU's.

Yay count me in guys. Just got my Gigabyte G1 Windforce GTX 980 in. Boy is she beautiful. Couldn't believe it was longer than my Titan by a fair bit, and 2x 8 pin power. So far with overclocking, hits 1.5 Ghz easily on the core, 350mhz extra on the memory, gonna keep going up on both tomorrow. Temp never goes past 65c. Straight away in games I can tell a difference from my Titan which Is awesome, as I love most me games 100 fps+

Great thanks for the heads up! I hope i'll get a good card too!

Did you tried it in games and benchs?

I got this card too yesterday from newegg (EVGA 04G-P4-2975-KR GeForce GTX 970). I don't notice any coil whine and it seems more quiet than my old XFX 7970. Its fast! I read some of the negative forum posts at evga and guru3d about the ACX fan. I'm still not sure if people are complaining about getting an ACX 1.0 fan or what. Either way, I'm happy with mine. I'm not overclocking and the temperatures were low under idle and load (sorry I don't have specific numbers right now).

Yo,

Would either of you mind uploading (or PM'ing) me a copy of your SSC bios?

Cheers

Question about the Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980

I was watching Linus Tech Tips review of it and he says it has "2 Dual-link DVI outputs"

Is that factually true? Could I run both my catleaps off this without having to use a Display port to DVI adapter?
if true is it one of the first/only gaming card to offer dual dual-link connectors? most only have 1

I recommend this benchmark http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=61883. You will probably expose unstable OC in only one or two loops. Benchmark like Furmark or Heaven were stable both for 8 hours in my case. Thanks to Apocalypse When benchmark I found out mine 1500mhz on core is unstable :-( so I have to downclock it to 1458mhz and looks fine now.

I tried gtx970 from MSI and Gigabyte and both are unstable on 1500mhz after all tests and gaming. Not very lucky in picking videocards :-( Still MSI one looks like better piece for OC.

FWIW, under "Key Features" on the back of my box it says "Support for four concurrent displays; two dual-link DVI connectors, HDMI and Displayport 1.2" This is for the EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX1.0, P/N 04G-P4-0974-KR.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36741276&postcount=740

And looking at the images of most of the 970s on Newegg, they have 2x DL DVI.

Received my card during lunch and installed it. The card is dead quiet, very pleased about that. Not pleased about the coil whine under full load though. While playing games like Diablo 3 I can't hear a thing but when running Heaven bench it's whining like a newborn child...

EVGA is offering to step-up to the FTW edition which I just did. I'll have to wait a few months in queue though but nothing too bad. I'll continue to use my 970 SSC ACX 2.0 and see if I can find a way to reduce the whine in a "non warranty cancelling" manner

"First/only" is very misleading.

290* is 2x Dual-Link DVI. Nvidia since 6** series is 2x Dual-Link DVI. The exception are AMD 7*** and below, which had 2x DVI with the Dual-Link pins but still only one of the DVI ports could actually run in Dual-Link mode. So just looking at the physical DVI port to judge whether its Dual-Link will not tell you anything.

Several of the manufacturers of the 9** cards specifically state 2x Dual-Link DVI in the specs. I suppose you should be able to trust that.

To put it mildly

As for me, I haven't even bothered overclocking my G1 GTX 970s. Overclocking these things is unnecessary as their boost clock speed is already very high. Even in SLI they top out at 1380mhz and never go over 70c.

Compared to my previous GTX 770 4GB cards that had a max boost clock speed of 1241 and routinely exceeded 70c, but never went over 80c.

The Gigabyte G1 Gaming...really nice card you have there...the one I should have waited to get. Congrats on your new bomb!

yea that's kinda what I was getting at without actually posting it.

I want to run both at the same time and last I looked (its been a cpl years) there were very few cards that could do that and
