Finally got my ASUS Strix 970 card and so far am loving it, but I've noticed a strange issue. I have 2 monitors (BenQ BL2411's), one plugged into DP, the other DVI. The DP one does not initialize until Windows is loaded. In fact, it didn't initialize at all until I intalled the nvidia drivers. Seems very odd behaviour to me, which I didn't experience with my 7970 when using the miniDP ports.

Its because the DVI one is "first" port. If you unplug the DVI the DP should work normally.

Got my Zotac AMP! Omega GTX 980 today. Runs cool and quiet at 1500 boost with no problems at all.

Help please! I couldn't handle it, and I bought a second GTX 980 for SLI. Could anyone tell me if I have enough to run a SLI configuration or do I need to purchase a new video card?

PSU - SeaSonic M12II 620W (Bronze 80)
CPU - Intel i7-4770k
GPU - SLI GTX 980
One SSD
Audio Card - Sound Blaster ZXR (with daughter board) --> I don't think this uses much power
Running about Five fans

Edit: I wanted to run the new Acer 4k Gsync monitor. (I would rather get an IPS 4k Gsync, but it sounds like there won't be any available for awhile. I was pondering the Asus Rog Swift, but thought 4k would be better since I play games like Skyrim, Elder Scroll Online, and Borderlands.)

you are fine with room to spare on reference 980 cards and a mild oc on cards and cpu.

btw how do you get by with just an SSD for the only drive? I have nearly a terabyte of games.

I'm so glad to hear that!!!
My SSD is 256GB. Thankfully I play a single game for awhile, which allows me to keep a few on my PC. Although I still tend to redownload games as I want to play them.

620w M2II Platform is kind of pushing it IMO. I wouldn't say there is room for overclocking at least.

well my system even when using my daily oc is only using 330 watts at the wall. so that means probably about 280 real watts so another gtx 980 would still have him using well under 500 real watts. personally I would get at least a 750 watt psu but he could get by with well over 100 watts to spare on his current psu.

Ok, I don't plan on overclocking. Let me ask this, if I'm pushing it do I run the risk of damaging anything? Or will it just shut off?

First attempt to push my MSI GTX 980 Gaming went successful. Boosted to 1516, ended up sustaining 1506 boost after half way through a Metro Last Light benchmark loop. Temps topped out at 72 C with fan speed topping out at 60% (not audible from a ~4 feet away).

My settings were 110% power target, +190 core clock, +500mhz mem.

First off, you're spending $1100+ on graphics cards, but couldn't be bothered to check how much power they require?

Your M12II 620W has two PCIe connectors, your 980's require two each. So you will need to use adapters for two of the connectors, they'll probably be shipped with the cards.

As toyota said, the PSU shouldn't let any damage occur if it isn't powerful enough. But you never know for 100%, and if you never let your PSU get pushed beyond its limits, you'll never have to know. In your shoes I'd either cancel the order or grab a new quality 750W unit. But at the end of the day, 620W could be enough and if you want to run it at that, feel free.

Yeah new power supply is in order, don't skimp it's your most important component.

I am worried about the 12v rail on that PSU which is split @ 24a per rail. It is not a single rail design which is actually more ideal for multiple cards.

yeah you are right and after looking its only rated for 576 watts max on 12v. still fine but certainly not ideal. might as well get a proper psu if spending that much on graphics cards.

heck I think I would look for deals on a good 850 watt psu if running high end SLI was a concern. that way when big boy Maxwell comes out down the road I would be open to SLI then too.

I ran Gtx 680 sli with a 2600K all overclocked on a 5 year old Corsair HX 650. Would never go over 500 watts while gaming. And that is running a WC pump as well.

Building custom water loop for CPU plus GPU. Looking forward to seeing what this 970 can do on water...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does it really matter how cool the GPU runs on this 9 series ? Once it hits the power target you're capped there, am I right ?

Probably pretty much the same as it can do on air since it's NV's neutering of the TDP/Voltage which force it to stay within the strict limitations. They wouldn't want you to overclock it as much as it can and catch up to the next real high end maxwell card. I assume you know this though?

Lepa, a subsidiary of Enermax, has a modula 800W Gold for $100 after $20 MIR. However, in his case I'd get a Kill-a-Watt and try with the 620W as it should still be sufficient since 2x 980s won't use the same power as a single 980 x 2 as you can't get them loaded 100% due to SLI scaling.

Core i7 5930K @ 4.0ghz, 16GB of RAM, Gigabyte X99 Gaming 5:

1x 980 = 230W
2x 980 = 370W
3x 980 = 510W
4x 980 = 620W
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnS0xWtoRzk&list=UUXuqSBlHAE6Xw-yeJA0Tunw

Seems a bit on the low side but still I think 620W is enough for dual 980s.

Didn't know that they had a Gtx 970 waterblock out yet!

Yeah, the short PCB 907s are the exact same as the previous 670 waterblock from EK. Have been reading-up and they fit with no mods for the non ACX EVGA cards. Grabbed one for pretty cheap from eBay.
