WTF? Surprised you didn't immediately return for exchange.

Which flavor you buy?

EVGA SC. Everything in the box was sealed and the protective film looked untouched. I'll send it back if I find any issues but I do see your point, just didn't want the hassle after a long day at work.

I guess I'm too old school, the 0% fan thing freaked me out so I made a custom fan profile. Now I can relax. No fan noise and watching the idle temp go up just doesn't sit well for me.

Curious, any coil whine? I'm sending mine back to step-up to the FTW edition, don't want to have to break it in to get rid of the coil whine like I did on my initial 970 SC.

My 970 SSC had no coil whine, but my 970 FTW was very noticeably whining right away. It may have gotten better over the last few days, and with the case sealed up I can't hear it over the fans anyway.

I need to work on better airflow at the moment as the two cards get rather noisy and I'm not a huge fan of headphones. I'm used to my 6950 w/ Accelero cooler that I basically never heard. I may also be hearing my X-650 for the first time now that I'm running SLI.

I'm still reading that it's not just breaking it in, but having differing voltages in your system by basically just slightly upping the voltage to the card. Has anyone tried this to see if it works? I still haven't had time to install my STRIX 970, but I'll test it when I do if I have any coil whine.

I haven't heard any so far but I just got the card. I had several occasions where FPS count skyrocketed (from what I understood, with these cards coil whine is most audible at very high frame rates) but I haven't gotten it so far.

Gotta love this guy, 96Firebird is one of the nicest and most helpful people I ever talked to online.

What am I doing wrong here? AB doesn't seem to read my core and memory clocks. And how do I make sure NV control panel doesn't override my in game settings?

Hmm, seems to be completely random then. Just packaged up my 970 SC to send out tomorrow, she did well. My GTX 460 is back in action, for now. Here's to hoping my 970 FTW comes absent of coil whine.

Thanks man, I just do what I can to help.

The sliders in Afterburner are offsets, not actual clockspeeds. So +100 = 100MHz over stock. As for the memory clock, it is actually double the offset. So your stock 7000MHz will go to 8000MHz when set to +500.

As for the NV control panel settings, I'm not sure. I don't really mess with the control panel.

Getting myself a 980 in April pretty much a a gift to myself for me and my wifes 2 year anniversary.Mildly overclocking this card perhaps on the stock voltage and it will be sitting in a new Antec GX500 case.

Which card should i be pretty much excited about getting model wise?Noise isn't really my concern but i guess top notch cooling is. Is there a chance then even the rumored 380/390x could be out by then?If so a chance of a price drop on the 970/980s?

Anyone see this or bought it yet? Nvidia GTX 970 (Reference Cooler). Just bought two for SLI online at Best Buy (of all places). Selling $379.99, but had them price-match the ad on Newegg for $353.99 each. I always liked the reference cooler look (similar to my 780 SC) and glad Nvidia included a backplate!

Ugh, still waiting for BB's email letting me know when I can pick up at local store. I want it now!

Do you guys think a 980 is overkill for 1080p gaming?

not sure why you cant look at reviews and judge for yourself based on your wants and needs. its certainly a very poor value.

Been looking at the price differences between the cheapest 970 and the 980 on Newegg and its basically like $230 different or $235 if you include shipping cost. Its just about making me rethink my options too.

980 looks like a much nicer upgrade over my 770 but the pricing on the 970 looks great too.Reviews on the $330 Zotac look iffy but i have had a excellent experience with both my gtx650 and my 770 both from them.

Anyone have the Zotac $330 970 who can comment on how good it is?I seriously can't trust the newegg reviews cause the Antec GX500 case i just got today basically had some morons in the reviews section saying some stupid crap that pretty much isn't true so i am done trusting half those people.

Listing Pros/Cons and link to article which convinced me to take a chance on Nvidia's 970 GPU (instead of EVGA FTW ACX 2.0 which was similarly priced).

Pros:

  • Nvidia reference cooler has a dedicated, cult following.
  • built to the highest standards.
  • techniques in place to reduce coil whine.
  • overclocks like a mofo.
  • GTX980 PCB using all genuine parts.
  • lowest power consumption of any GTX970 we have tested.
Cons:

  • It is expensive.
  • A little overclock ‘out of the box’ wouldn’t have hurt, right?
  • leading third party cooling systems from Nvidia partners are quieter and run cooler.

How did you do a price match for online/in store pick up? I'm thinking of doing the same thing, so do tell

I had the pleasure of reading the Asus 970 Strix review and its quite nice for $350.Looks like a excellent go to card for those going outside of the htpc/water cooling department.

Just installed one yesterday and loving it! Having benched or spent a ton of times playing games, but the temps and, more importantly, SILENCE, are wonderful so far.

Maybe if you get the time you could load a demanding game and run a aggressive fan curve of maybe like 65% at 55cel and report back where it settles at on the tempsWould love you for that.

My Zotac 770 with its AMP! cooler has that aggressive fan curve and with my Antec GX500 with all 6 fans on low i pretty much top at out 70cel.I can hit higher but if i apply some unrealistic Death Valley type temps to my room but even then i top about 74cel. Dying to know how that 970 compares.

Good card. Fans off at idle is a smart design idea. Basically a passive card (when not gaming, which is 90% of time for me) and better fan longevity. Not that it amounts to much when we upgrade our cards every year or two, but still.

I knew there were higher performing 970s (Gigabyte G1 and MSI gaming) out there when I went for the Strix but didnt care. Been a few weeks with mine and very happy with my choice.

The thing I find most amusing about the comparison of these three cards is that the difference between the factory overclocks is so minimal as to be laughable. You can easily OC the STRIX (lowerst factory OC) to match the G1's clocks (highest factory OC) without changing voltage. And if you get a good GPU (luck of the draw, really) from any of the three manufacturers, the 970 has high OC potential. So the cards are really the same unless you're going for some insane OC with large increases in voltage. That said, the STRIX only has one DP, which doesn't matter for me now, but might be a drawback someday.

If you ran MSI AB, could you actually set a fan curve so the fan goes from off at like 54cel and then can go to like 65% when it goes pass 55 cel?I see the card boosts all over the place depending on game but does a aggressive fan curve make any difference? My 770 i can't hear till it gets pass 55% usage anyways and only if i turn off my speakers can i hear it lol.

The off function is nice but having it configurable is icing on the cake.

I have fan control disabled in MSI-AB to let the Strix work on its own, but just did a quick test for it to go on at 50c and stressed it a little. Fan came on at 50c and gradually went up to 53% at 63c then slowly went down to zero when temps dipped below 50c. So I guess you can.

In forums, have seen far more G1s and Gaming cards outdo the Strix in OC'ing. Especially the G1 where a few users had hit 1600mhz+. Never seen a Strix go near that. I believe these cards have a slight higher VID limits than the Strix allowing them to boost higher.
