Hey guy's, maybe someone can help. I got a evga 980 sc last week and can't seem to raise the memory in precision, it doesn't take. Also in cpu-z under the graphics card tab the memory reads 1753 but in the sensor tab it's only 1502.3 while under load. Thanks.

I am new to custom built computers and I got a couple of questions about my MSI 970 4G

Are you suppose to remove the plastic covers from the SLI slot before using? I am not planning to get a second card for SLI, so should I leave the plastic cover on? example here, I obviously removed the pcie cover, but I left the sli cover at top on

would the heat cause problems with the plastic cover?

Is this card suppose to give a new metal burn smell when hitting high 70C temp? I stress tested to reach that high and it smell like hot metal + warn air coming from my case. I didnt get this smell when I ran prime95 for my cpu, but when I ran furmark to get the gpu high, I got scared. Is this like a new card smell and will it go away?

Msi afterburner, do I need to leave this active within windows to use custom fan curve? Once I exit this program, it seems to revert back to bios setting. If when I overclock with afterburner, do I have to leave this program active as well to archive the high clock speeds? Lastly, how come when I save profiles within afterburner, it doesnt save the fan control settings, is this normal?

Thanks and merry xmas!

There's no need to have the protective covers on once it's in the PC.

You'll get that "new card smell" after heating them up. It's normal.

The new card smell is normal. I would like my components to smell this their whole life. I really love that new part smell.

It is fine if you leave the protective plastic in place. Won't cause any issue.

Yes, leave Afterburner open in the tray (minimize to tray) if you want to retain the custom fan profile (also make sure you have it set to apply settings upon windows start up).

The SLI bridge protective covers don't need to be on. They are there to prevent people from scratching the gold coating off the pins installing it into the case.

Thats good I was smelling a slight burn but has since disappeared.

quick question is true that msi gtx 970 gaming g4 (the one with red and black color scheme) suffers from coil whine

I picked up the msi 970 gaming a few days ago and there is no coil whine at all. In fact, the fans rarely spin unless I am gaming, and even then they are quiet in my Fractal Design R4. I'm coming from a Visiontek 7970 which was a good card, but it was not what you would call quiet. Now it is strange to sit here with this new build and there is no sound at all.

There isn't a "g4." So far, no one has made a good survey of tens of thousands of these cards. You'll just have to try. I've had two MSI Gaming GTX 970s, the first had bad coil whine, the second very little (to the point that my case blocks it, and most people would have fans too loud to hear it even with an open case). Have they categorically fixed it, or is there still a fair chance of it? I have no Earthly idea. Get it from somewhere that's easy to return to, in case it does.

With the two MSI 970 Gaming's I had, neither had noticeable coil whine. Not saying that it did not exist, but I never noticed it on either card.

Ok, finally finished my new build with the eVGA 970 FTW. So far things are running well (BF4 on ultra is so nice) but have a question on temps. I'm doing no additional overclocking on the card and after playing a few 30+ min rounds it reached a max temp of 76 C according to afterburner. I assume that is in the normalish range for the card at 100% utilization?

I never heard it spin up and it looks like the fan only got into the 30% range. So far I'm liking the card, might have to push it a little. Thoughts on that temp?

I'm not sure on the EVGA one. The reference cooler is designed to run up to 80* before throttling I believe.

The temps are fine, but I felt the stock FTW fan curve was a little on the lenient side as far as temps go. I like my temps low, so I've adjusted my fan curve to my liking. I've never seen above 65°C, yet still can't hear the fans.

How do you modify the curve? I can set it at a specific speed with afterburner, but I'm not sure about adjusting the whole curve, sounds like something I'd like to do.

typo. 4g.
so coil whine may or may not happen depending on luck. apart from the noise does coil whine affect performance or is harmful to card itself. i can bear with noise if thats the only thing coil whine does.

In Afterburner, click on Settings, then the second tab is called Fan. Click the checkbox for Enable and then you can move the points to your desired fan speed at temperature. Click Ok, then in the fan section on the main screen, click the Auto button so it is green.

Hello.

I believe I am ready to make the transition from 7950 cfx to 970 sli for my main rig. I am not 100% there yet, but I believe this will be how things play out. I reckoned that there is no point waiting for the 960Ti, in order to save a couple hundred euro bucks.

That being said, I think I will go for the G1. They say it has nice power circuits and I like my overclock. More out of a hobbie, not out of necessity.

So what do you guys and G1 owners think. Is it a good card? Any complaints so far?

Oh and is there any other model than the V1? I don't want to get a V2 model and find out that I am voltage locked...AGAIN! I got burned one time with my 7950 WF3s, don't want a second one. This time I want to have fun!

Also what about the OC? I read at guru3D that it can reach 1.5Ghz turbo with + 87Mv. Is that something common with these cards or can they go higher or lower as a more common result?

thanks

I am looking at the same card, that and the Asus Strixx. The Asus the last time i checked was $10 cheaper but from reviews the G1 is a overclocking beast and worth the premium.300w cooler as well i believe.

Have next to no experience with either brandBeen mostly Evga, but i know those aren't even remotely a good choice compared to Asus and Gigabyte.

Well apart from the locking of the voltage of my 7950s, the cooler was exceptional. No regrets there.

The 970 G1 has a similar and better one I think, which is important.

Yeah the G1 is the obviously better of the two i think. Some may love the zero fan of the Strixx but that isn't exactly something i care much for.Mornings like this one i find more ambient noise from the highway i live off of and my case fans then my 770 at 70% fanspeed.75% is when my 770 is pretty much is audible.Evenings when the highway quiets down 70% is pretty audible lol.My case fans are louder then the card at 70%.Gas heater when it kicks on though is louder then the card at 70%.

I have a thing for fan curves, dying to know what a max load set for something like 70cel would take on a stock G1.I set 40% till 55cel then it ramps immediately to 65% on my 770 where i top out at 80cel if my gas heater near me roasts me to death or a typical load of maybe 75cel with it lowered or shut off.

I love balancing noise on my gpu these days with my pc case and ambient noise,i used to simply run the lousy reference coolers back in day at 100% .:whiste:

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!!!!!!!!

About sums it up

Does anyone know if the non G1 that is $10 cheaper have the same cooler as the G1?I wouldn't cheap out $10 on purposely for a non G1 but i wouldn't know if when the time comes to buy if there would be stock and if not would i be missing much of anything with the non G1 over the G1 outside of the overclock?

I would maybe wait a good while for stock to return but the suspense would just about kill me into making a second possible alternative choice lol.

They are not the same heatsink, but it looks like the fans are the same. The G1 heatsink has 4 heatpipes that spread out from the GPU, while the WF3 model has 2 heatpipes. Also, the G1 comes with a backplate.
