yeah its going to be even more embarassing. GTX 970 matches or is slightly behind R9 290X perf at roughly half the power consumption. iAMD had nowhere to hide from this hammering.

you have to be careful with words/numbers around here.
as you said - roughly speaking.

this was a good day.
tomorrow I wanna read Charlie's editorial about this being a case of NV flying high right before their entire house comes crashing down

It seems like Nvidia hit the jackpot with maxwell. Good at the mobile front as well as the desktop front. Kudos Nvidia

Kepler was/is still a very efficient architecture. 980 uses less juice than a 680 but is faster than a 780Ti on the same node. I don't know how you can't call that impressive. But, to each his own.

Impressive in its own right, but not matching what I've been hearing we should expect on power reduction vs 780ti.

The 980 is interesting (less power, more performance, cheaper than 780ti), but the 970 looks like the real game changer here to me due to price.

Yea, Diego's post lines up more with what I was expecting.

Quality 650w for 980sli and the 970sli could be run on quality 550w.

Waiting to see more 290 cf vs 970 SLI results, do these support XDMA SLI?

You know what is kind of interesting, Texel Fill on the 980 is terrible but Pixel Fill is extremely good. That's exactly how Iris Pro is (relatively speaking).

Also DP is down to 1/32 now.

just have to laugh
most peeps here make 50+k a year and your falling over your self's to save $200.00 on cards that won't last any longer than gpu's from 1.5 years ago -running at 1300 mhz that is on the same process that nv could not do on the B1's 9 months ago

Really? What have you been hearing? Were you given numbers? Do you have some sources we can check out? Or was it just idle forum chatter you're referring to?

Nvidia just Slaughtered AMD.

AMD better have something under its sleeve & fast or else waiting till 1H 2015 is too late.

Anybody buying anything other than a 970 right now for a mid-High end graphics setup is a fool.

Hats-off Nvidia:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I try not to judge someone who is trying to find a way to save a few bucks on something they love to do. Everyone's situation is different and we don't know the responsibilities they have or don't have.

Considering the leaked water cooler, I doubt the 390 is going to come in below 400 watts. People are right, AMD is in a bit of trouble. The next 2-3 month is among the most crucial since we're approaching the holiday season. If AMD has no answer than Nvidia is going to clean up with the 970 and 980 come Christmas.

It's a bit shocking that the price is this low. Nvidia just released the Titan Z at $3000 under 1/2 year ago and this makes it absolutely obsolete.

Yes, but with that same 50+K, how many family members do they have to support? None? Four? Do they have a mortgage? Car payments? everyday life?
Do they live in NY or Alabama? Try not to judge someone who is trying to find a way to save a few bucks on something they love to do. Everyone's situation is different.
I could buy a $1000 gpu if I wanted to but I love getting great deals and lots of value for my money. thats why I also dont pay 60 bucks for games.

This. If someone can now afford to get a high end videocard that they either waited a while or saved for a while to get I really don't see why that is something to laugh at.

Ya.
I don't have any hopes either.

But maybe if they could at least get the performance crown at that power consumption, than maybe its worth something.
But then Nvidia can just drop GM210.

Interesting times ahead for sure.
And this holidays might be the best time to buy a GPU.

Wow.. I didn't think it was going to be this impressive in regards to perf/w. On the same node, they were able to extract twice more performance using similar power figures. Perhaps they could even release a dual GPU SKU for $699 in the form of GTX 990 (those GTX970 SLi reviews look hella impressive).

Im more interested in the DSR and the other image quality features. The first one sounds really useful for old games or if you have extra GPU power you can use this to enhance the IQ even more so. No more workarounds to achieve this is a bonus. Looking forward to an indepth article on this from Ryan ^^.

P.S - With rumours swirling about the big Maxwell (GM200) being taped out not so long ago from the initial GM204s (being ~620mm^2 i.e. the biggest ever), we could potentially see GTX Titan refresh this fall if yields are good. With this type of results, we could potentially see a product that does push the absolute performance envelope.

Nvidias pricing on these two cards pretty perfect.

Clean up in high end at 330, and where to go above that? 980 sits fairly alone and yea, that'll cost you.

A $399 290x might fit. Probably has to get down to $349 with the 290 getting in under $300. But AMD is fish outta water as of today, how soon do we see price cuts...

And its really not good for the company if your solution needs more expensive cooling while matching the performance. Margins will be cut drastically and thermals can pose other unwanted challenges like PCB layout/component selection etc. All this takes up engineering resources so you really want to have a good perf/w GPU to maintain good margins. Such a contrasting release vs AMD's Tonga release not so long ago..

Surprised by this, many thought it would fall short at 4K.

tweaktown shows 4k is falling a bit short but definitely competitive. Highest clocked 290X trades blows with 980 at 4K. Personally, I'd get the 980 still. The difference between 27 on a 980 and 34 fps on a 290x is still crap experience IMO... although the $400 price tags on the 290x is starting to look tempting.

its jacked up pricing for the consumer with a 770 or especially 780 wanting to upgrade. a 780 is now worth crap after seeing a $330 970 so not only would the $550 price of 980 bite you in the ass, you will lose big time on the back end too. the price gap needs to be closer.
