hey guys so I just finished building a new rig and im having issues getting my GTX 970 to work.. heres what I have in my PC

intel i7 4790k
ASUS Hero II z97
24bg of RAM ( to use ASUS's RAMdisk )
2 tb WD black HDD
240gb samsung SSD
corsair CX750
MSI GTX970 4G

so heres what happened.

I first hooked up the PSU with the CPU and mobo with onboard graphics to verify it would post, which it did. I then installed all components including the graphics card. after booting the TV i am using for a monitor showed "no display" while plugged into the GPU or the onboard HDMI slot. I removed the GPU and turned the PC on, it spooled up and shutdown before posting, as I was reaching for the power button it turned back on and displayed everything just fine. I installed windows and all the motherboard and GPU drivers on the discs and shut the PC down and reinstalled the GPU. again after turning the PC on it spooled up for a second, restarted then showed "no display" on either port.. I have since removed the GPU and everything seems to running fine. My question is do I have a dead GPU out of the box or is there a setting I am missing?

I should note that I am only using an HDMI cable to connect to the TV, I can get a VGA cable and try or DVI as well, also. I have an old GTX 470 I may test tomorrow to see if it works...

With the GPU plugged in, that is probably disabling your onboard.

I would try other cables / connection types, just in case.

You do have both auxiliary power connectors plugged into the GPU right? (Sorry, I know, it sounds silly, but people forget that.)

Definitely try the 470 - if it works, then you know for sure.

Defective stuff out of the box happens - RMA/exchange it and you'll 99.999% of the time be fine.

well I plugged in the 470 this morning and it started right up without issue, so after a good nights rest I decided to plug in the 970 one more time and its working.. my guess is after being up for 18 hrs i didnt get the PCI-E power plugs installed completely.. either way new card is working now but I have to say, maybe its due to the older games I play but the only difference im noticing between the 470 and the 970 is gpu temp as the 970 runs about 30C cooler than the 470, that and load times which are due to my new HDD and CPU but maybe if I got a newer game I would notice more of a difference, but Arma 3 still blows at max even on my new rig....
