Hello, I'm thinking of getting a rig with 3 980s in sli but I'm worried about microstuttering. Can someone please tell me whether I will suffer greatly from it or whether certain games like GTA V, skyrim, cod aw, bf4, rtw 2, etc. Won't be optimized for 3 way sli? All parts are confirmed to work. Thanks

you can use tinfoil to provide extra bandwidth connection between the 3 cards which removes the microstuttering

No one is going to be able to tell you for certain if you will suffer.

From what I have seen in reviews the 9xx SLI series does have stutter in some situations. However even a single card can have stutter due to frame time jitter. It depends how sensitive you are to it.

In general 3 way sli is usually a bad idea unless you are going purely for FPS count / benchmarking as the amount of problems people see increase greatly and frame rate does not scale that well after 2 cards in most cases.

What resolution are you playing your games at?

Any particular reason for 3-way SLI? Is it a hobby?
too much cash? (give it to me)
Alas, go for 2-way SLI.
3-way will give you problems,as already stated above by digitaldurantel.

I wouldn't even go SLI or any dual setup. Like you only get performance boost if there is specific SLI profile put in the driver.

After a year support for the last gen SLI goes down the window. People with 6xx series cards in SLI are having huge problems and most games don't even work in SLI.

I don't think SLI is worth it. You get just enough power from 1 card to play at 1080p with all settings maxed, but with SLI you don't get the worry free performance at 4k resolutions.

Its not worth for 4k, and it doesn't matter for 1080p and lower gaming.

OP, would you please post all of your other components, i.e.
motherboard, cpu, ram, psu and monitor.

As you can see from my sig I run only 2 cards in Crossfire but also have 2 GTX670s in SLI in another rig.

Have you ever run another rig with 2 video cards in either CF or SLI?

The monitor resolution is a key component. If you are running a single monitor at 1920 x 1080 or lower with 3 GTX980s is ????

KaRLitoS has tons of experience with multi-gpu setups as do others.

Good luck

Never used SLI
Reason for these components is futureproofing

I just switched from 670 SLI at the end of October and I experienced no problems. What problems are 6xx SLI users having suddenly?

Most games don't work in SLI? What percentage of games do you consider most? There were a few games recently that did not support SLI for a short time after release.. but MOST games don't support SLI?

If you're going to be gaming at 1080p, your best option is to go for a single GTX 980 for now. See how that suits you. If it's not fast enough for you, then you can add a second card, etc. Most likely when you get to a point where you can't run games at 1080p at a framerate of your liking, the next generation of Nvidia and/or AMD cards will be out.

In general, the goal of "futureproofing", when it comes to PC gaming, just means you spent way too much money for very little extra usable performance in the here and now.

OP: First, great system with very high end parts except the monitor. PLEASE get at least a 2560 x 1440p resolution monitor. 4k is here and getting better. If you stay with a 1080p 27" monitor, save your $$$ and get a single GTX980.

I "splurged" and got a BenQ BL3200PT 32" 2560 x 1440 monitor and it is really worth it. If you are going for 3 GTX980 gpus a 4k monitor is appropriate.

Dittos on the Asus Rog swift.

yeah futureproofing is a lost cause with PC

you are going to buy way too much raw horsepower of a single architechture

but when architechtures change you will still be left in the dust and relying on brute power to do what newer cards are doing much more elegantly

Single card all day every day. Unless you're at 4k then you'll need it. Otherwise hassle hassle microstutter unsupported title microstutter hassle dropped frame microstutter hassle hassle unsupported title

So I shouldn't buy this? :|

Worst watercool blocks you'll find for such an inflated price.

Just get custom watercool instead.

Sorry but that is not most, it is "some". Who needs 144fps to run Sims 4? Dead Island? Really? You want to play that game?

$3000 for three water cooled 980s? nope.
if you're that hard set on buying 3-way SLI setup, buy three reference 980s and go for custom water loop, and with the money saved you can go to a...
Strip club or a brothel or something
you're welcome.
