Someone who has a budget for 5960X and triple 980s should strongly consider a 4K gaming monitor. For 1080p, 5820/4790k and 970 SLI/290CF is all you need. Futureproofing with thousand dollar components is a waste of time.

RS: I'll go further and say that for most games even at 2560 x 1440, 970SLI/290CF will be plenty of Horsepower.

I respect the OP for at least asking for input. However, when I saw he lists a single 27" 100p monitor, I realized he was confused as to the power of a single GTX980.

First, the 5960X from what I read is truly a beast but for the $$$ not the best cpu for gaming unless running multiple gpus and even then the devil's Canyon may be better. I have a 3930k @ 4.6Ghz in my rig below, but honestly my 3770k @4.5 Ghz with 2 GTX670s runs just as well in most games. Perhaps triple GPUs would tilt in favor of the hexcor/octocore but at what cost?

The biggest change I have experienced is jumping from 1080p to 1440p in 2 of my 3 rigs.

Thus my comment that, in my humble opinion, running a THREE GTX980 setup should have at least a single 4k monitor to take advantage.

guskline, the other problem with SLI above 2 cards is horrendous micro-stutter. Generally speaking Maxwell SLI is good for 2 cards, terrible for 3-4 cards. If you want 3-4 cards, you go AMD CF as it's a lot better for actual gaming. My recommendation for Maxwell is to stick with dual-SLI at most for the time being.

Linus confirms saying that 970 Tri-SLI was a stuttering mess in both FC4 and Crysis 3:

Buying 3x 980s to future-proof for 1080P is a waste. When games need that kind of power, we'll have way faster cards. I am also having a hard time coming up with a PC game that will run much faster on a 5960X max OC vs. 5820 max OC. I would only recommend 5960X + Triple-980s to someone for whom $ isn't a factor and they keep getting the fastest parts ever 12 months-15 months. However, such a gamer surely can afford 1-3 high quality 4K monitors too.

RS, thanks for the input and especially Linus's video link of the 3 970s vs the 2 980s.

Is anyone on this link besides KaRLiToS running tri or quad gpus?

I've never done it.

why are people saying its overkill when it probably wont even run GTA4 maxed out at 1080p/120+ fps

crossfire 970's at 1440p? you will still be sub 60 on the newest games

there is no such thing as overkill

Hip Hip hooray for the new Nvidia 980 cards. I've got one (just one) with 4GB of memory on board in my new notebook PC and I've been blazing along in Far Cry 4 with all settings at "ultra". This is one awesome video card!
