Liquid nitrogen overclocking is about as pratical and useful as strapping jet engines on the back of road cars to see how fast they can go.

I wonder which records I could break with an entire team of engineers and unlimited funds and hardwares just like this guy.

Never understood why people care about this type of overclocking.
It's a type of sport for some folks, like drag racing and funny cars. Zero practical use, but it's food for thought. If any card has the components to take it, a KP or even Classified would be it.

It's like a competitive sport for a lot of people. Kind of like putting a 250 shot and slicks on your Porsche in order to beat the Z06 Vette in the next lane over. It's not practical, but it sure is fun ()

lol, when I feel like I need more power in my Porsche I won't have it anymore. Thinking I'll be getting a new (to me) car soon. =)

I'm thinking I need to roll some dice over a 360 or viper gts.

I think he broke some 3dmark records for single fastest GPU. Theres a whole community of very hard core enthusiasts trying to one up each other at 3d mark and he's one of them.

He's backed up by EVGA.

You would brake records too with their help, believe me.

See this is what I am taking from it. Yes its not practical but it sure is fun if you can afford to do it. (and have the backing)
What this does show though is that if you have a very nice water cooled setup on the GTX 980, it has huge overclocking potential.

While that might be true here.
Kingpin was a top Overclocker before he joined EVGA.
The reason he got the job at EVGA was because of his OCing abilities.

Not really. Water and LN2 are completely different animals. This card had a custom BIOS you'll never have access to, an additional PCB with more power delivery soldered on to the card, full voltage control, cherry picked core and a couple guys standing there pouring liquid nitrogen on it. It was consuming about 800 watts.

These are cool as a spectacle, but don't represent real world possibilities.

Whats funny is that I'll bet quite a few people reading about kinpins exploits will say "OMG!! My next card is Evga!" I guess Evga know that all too well and is why they sponsor him.

It's "break". And think of them as a NASCAR race team backed by sponsors to win the Daytona 500. It sounds like you have a bit of contempt for them though.

Sorry Grooveriding, maybe I didn't explain myself properly. I am not saying that overclock is possible with water cooling, I am saying that a healthy overclock on water is very possible.
Time will tell.

I really like this type of OC. While not practical every day, it is useful in showcasing the absolute limit of a given technology and can reveal things that everyday use can't. I think in one way or another, the mainstream benefits from this in how devices are engineered. Cooling, power delivery, etc. need to be built to a higher quality to accommodate this kind of potential. I'll never OC a 980 to 2Ghz, but it's nice to know that I've got plenty of headroom to practically OC to 1.4Ghz.

This kind of OC and the gloating it brings is still pretty dumb. If you had a tray of Frankenstein video cards and a jug of nitrogen, you could do it too.

The story is cool, bros.

I'm more impressed by the 5.2 ghz OC on the Xeon ES that he used.

And how would you acquire a tray of Frankenstein Video cards.
These guys MOD those cards themselves.

And do you know how much software efficiency tuning these guys do.?

If only you had bothered to try it someday that you would realize how not easy it really is.
Sitting on the porch & commenting is always easy.

Strange to see negativity in this thread. As a PC enthusiast, I think its cool these guys go out and test the limits of the GPUs. Obviously it isn't real world overclocks lol. Neither is the 800hp chevy going 200mph around Daytona, its for fun and spectacle.

I don't understand the the comments as well. We are geeks, this sort of thing should excite people, even if its a pipe dream for most.
I love watching Super cars in action. I understand I will never have the money to own one let alone mod it to break speed records. It still doesn't change the fact this overclock is pretty darn impressive.

I feel the same. So why the negative comments? Can we go back to other record breakers in past suicide LN2 OC/modded threads and see if the concept was met with the same contempt? Or maybe times are changing..
