GTX 980 Ti price increases?

Hello,
I was thinking of putting together a system sometime around the holidays (Christmas) but the main decision was that I would use the 980ti that i currently have (EVGA SC) and save some money on the new system and maybe buy a 1050 or something down the road to put in my older system which would be used for storing old vids, browsing the web and playing older less demanding games etc.
I am pretty sure it was not that long ago when the prices for GTX 980tis were in the high $400 - low $500 range so I thought maybe Santa could get me another one and I could run them in SLI.
Then I went and checked the prices for new 980tis online and got my shock.
It seems as if they are higher priced than the GTX 1080s which are currently the ones to get for grahics power and in stock!
I don't understand how retailers could justify raising prices on the older technology when the newer faster tech is in stock and cheaper by around $80-100.
Can anyone explain this to me?

The 980 Ti is EOL... nVidia has stopped manufacturing them. Shady third party vendors love to jack up the prices on EOL stuff like this.

The prices of products that aren't being actively made aren't really bound by msrp anymore and basically vary strictly by supply and demand. You may observe (if you spend enough time or live long enough) that many used products on ebay cost more today than they did when they were sold in stores, and the price tends to fluctuate quite a bit by recent swings in supply (and demand).

Thanks for the replies.
I understand how something scarce can increase in value. But it seems strange that they would be more than the current generation (that clearly bests it) and is out at the same time. One would have to be pretty dim to buy a GTX 980ti now vs a 1080 at a lower price. The only way I can see people buying these (assuming that 1080s stay in stock) is if they want to do 980ti in SLI and even then it may just be better to sell the current 980ti (for say $400) and use the cash + money for new card towards two 1080s.
Anyway, everyday I learn something new ......

980 Ti's used are reasonably priced. Check out the FS/T forum here, you'll see cards in the $350 range pretty regularly.

Like every other market there are always suckers who don't know better. The profit bean counters at the vendor side knows this.
