Takes all kinds. For some people the optimization is half the satisfaction. For some people being able to go "yeah I want the best" and get it is more satisfying. It's a hobby, we're paying money to get dopamine flowing. However, top end NV cards are an inefficient means of converting money into framerate, especially since their main appeal is being the best single card and that title sticks with a single card for a relatively short time.
It's a shame that there isn't a good average frames per second per dollar graph of the GPU market over time (and it'd be horrible to make), I think it'd be pretty interesting overall.
