GTX470/GTX480 not downclocking on Windows 7?

I’m on a single display setup, but my GTX470 doesn’t seem to be downclocking to idle clocks when idling (Windows 7 64 bit). I don’t recall having this problem on Windows XP.

This results in a 73C idle temp; on XP it idled between 40-45C.

This happens on both 197.75 and 197.41.

I saw a few other people with this issue, but I was wondering if anyone in this forum has it?

Turn off Aero for a test. I don't have this issue with these 480's, so turning off Aero theme is just for a test.

I already tried that but it had no effect. I even tried the adaptive power mode.

I have a 0% GPU load right now, but the card is sitting at 3D clocks. Even if I leave a blank Windows desktop for 15 minutes with no applications open, it doesn’t clock down.

I wonder if it’s a 470 issue then? Specifically, the driver might be erroneously thinking I have multiple displays and hence is keeping the clocks up?

This guy has the same problem with one display. and his board works fine on XP: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=166957

I'll pop my 470 in later on in the day and see what the temps of it are.

Switched the mout and the temps are around 44C-48C for the 470 for me

Wow 72c idle.
That thing has got to affect your CPU overclocking and overall system operating temp big time.

Does this happen on a system restart?, or are the clocks proper on initial windows load-up and just not being reset to 2D clocks after you've exited a 3D app?

Are you using any overclocking tools that may be interferring with the clocks or rather causing an issue where the drivers think the card should be running 3D clocks.

You can go into msconfig and disable all startup programs and see if the card still sits at 3D speeds at windows desktop after a reboot.

It does sound like a dual monitor type issue, my question would be if a dual monitor setup results in full 3D clocks at the desktop or something in between 2D and 3D clocks.

just a shot in the dark, is windows power management set to high performance, or something similar to that in the nvidia control panel?

It happens right after a system reboot. This is a clean system with no overclocking or gadgets running in the background.

I've already tried using adaptive power management, but it didn't do anything. Anyway, XP doesn't have that power management feature but it still underclocks the card just fine.

I might try those new beta drivers.

All other things being equal (OS, driver, settings) the only thing that would effect that would be possibly a corrupt BIOS on the card? Maybe a newer BIOS is available? Definitely give the new drivers a whirl first.

I found the problem: it seems the power management setting doesn't change unless you reboot the system first. The global setting also needs to be "adaptive" because the default profiles won't affect it. I've got nice idle clocks again - temp is 44C and dropping.

Oh, and the beta drivers are utter shit. Once they froze the system when I was logging in, and another time I lost my display signal when I was changing some settings in the control panel. So I’m back with good ol’ 197.41.

are you referring to the 256 Beta drivers being shit?

Global power management should be adaptive, the problem you are having is if you either set it to max performance or if you have a game profile set to max performance. Then your cards will not to down clock properly when you exit the application, even if your global setting is on adaptive.

And the drivers are working great, BC2 @ 2560x1440, 16x CSAA, 4x TRSSAA, 16x AF, HQ Filtering, looks beautiful. What settings did you change?

I have the same problem with my GTX 470 SLI -system, GPU2 will not clock down after 3D application is closed. This happens everytime if I have used any OC or core voltage changes (i.e. with MSI Afterburner) or made any changes to nVidia default profile (global or game specific).

I can solve that by setting power management to adaptive in global or game profile but then SLI is not functioning properly. In some games GPU2 is just idling or is loaded very lightly and that can be seen in frame rates (e.g. in 3Dmark Vantage, TF2).

I can disable SLI and then enable it again which will return clock down functionality without rebooting the PC. I'm with single display.

Idle temps for SLI, when working properly: GPU1 63C (PCIe_1), GPU2 56C (PCIE_2), room temp 25C.
When one GPU installed in the system: 44-48C with the same air cooling arrangement in my Antec P180 case.
