I would expect dual 280's to be pretty close to a single 480 performance wise.

Russian did put it a little harsh, but I too can not understand why people would buy these cards, if there are better priced options out there?

I apologize, if I did, to the OCGuy and the rest of the AnandTech community.

Do all review sites bench on an open platform? Seems like these cards would benefit greatly from a lowly intake side fan. Specially the 480 where the cool air would hit the heatpipes.

Well I wont buy ATI, as in my experience they are junk. From 9700Pro, 9800Pro, and X800XT all died after minimal use. They performed well, but just dont last. Even at work the only cards to bite the dust are ATI. Then there are the bloated Catalyst drivers. Linux support used to be an issue, but not anymore. I just dont trust them. I dont doubt that they are better now, but with my luck I'll get a dude.

However, I wont buy these new Nv cards either. I'll wait for a 6600GT/8800GT/GTX260 216 class Fermi card. Assuming Nv can even make one anymore.

Why do people keep throwing out the don't buy that because your utility bill is going to take a huge hit. If they do then they must live at home... If paying another $5, $10 a month or what ever the cost is too damn much for you then you shouldn't be spending that much money on a f-ing video card anyway. Stop acting jealous. I own a house, I work for a living, and I'll put as big of a fucking heat box together as I want to. WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!! ? I run a small window unit in my pc room which draws about 450W. It allows me to keep my man cave at 68F while leaving the central AC alone. Might run me an extra $20 a month for the window unit but it's worth it to stay nice and cool. Stop eating fast food every other day and you'd be surprised how easy it is to save enough cash to offset the ...huge utility bill increase you'll see from running a GTX 480. I'm going to replace the Asus 5850 in my micro ATX rig with a GTX 480...oh shit my electric bill will jump $5 a month... I've had water pumps that draw 90W from the wall... A 75W-100W difference between a 5870 and a 480 will not make a big difference in monthly utility bill costs... and I don't care where you live.

"why buy one"
"cuz i wanna!"
"nv fanboy"
"ati sucks"
"physx sucks and cuda blows"
"drivers are terribad"
"no eyefinity!"
"no 3dvision!"
"too hot"
"too slow!"

Now, can we end this 5 pages early?

Why does every thread turn into this on GPU/CPU forums...... Sad

I do/have owned both ATI and Nvidia and found the drivers work great with the software I use and if it don't it will with time. It just bugs me that some post about how this didn't work for them and they suck so bad ect. I almost wonder how much time was put into the why...

OC enjoy your card! There are some valid questions in this post but of course that only lasted for so long

can not understand why people would buy these cards, if there are better priced options out there?

Why buy a Camaro if the Mustang costs less and is faster? Why buy an Accord if the Sonata has a longer warranty and costs less? Why buy Kraft when store brand cost less? Why buy Tylenol when generics cost less? Why drink bottled water when tap water is almost free and they are 99.99% the same thing by volume and weight? Why use Post It™ notes when Staples house brand is cheaper?

Does everyone have to disclaimer all their purchases these days?

Maybe I liked the stock wheels better, or had a more helpful salesperson? Maybe I had a coupon? Maybe it tastes funny or doesn't fit exactly into the dispensor? Maybe I had a bad experience with unintended acceleration or a driver issue or an upset stomach a couple years ago and now don't "trust" it? Maybe I'm a long-time member of the Tiburon Enthusiast Group and wouldn't drive a VW GTI even if I were paid to? Maybe I like Grey Goose and think Smirnoff is for unsophisticated cheap bastards? Maybe the Reeboks clash with my jogging shorts but Asics match perfectly?

its just irrational to purchase something that costs $100 more for a performance increase thats as small as 8-10%

We're consumers, not government. It's ok if we make minor illogical purchases. Buying Fermi is kinda like buying a Hummer (only on a much smaller scale). Sure, they're nice, but you know...

And this is a hobby for some, hobbies cost money.

She has arrived and is installed! Power usage went down from high 500s to low 400s on load. (From the wall) It doesnt look like precision is working right, I dont think my core is that high!

It's showing 701 core, 1401 shaders. That's what it's supposed to be.

ever heard of diminishing returns?

Anyways, sli scaling for gtx 480s is quite impressive if you haven't seen the numbers, which is apparently what the person who received the gtx 480 on the evga forum is planning to do.

Precision for the 480 is different. You have the newest one?

I didnt get an EVGA, so I didnt get the one they shipped. This is straight off the website, maybe that is why.

@ Keys: On GPU-Z its right, but not Precision.

Ah crud. Sorry, didn't pay close enough attention. Patrick is right, you need a special eVGA precision for the 480. Different arch plays tricks. You need version 1.9.2.
And beware, it doesn't show the core clock because you cannot unlock them. They are permanently linked (core and shaders). So always divide the shaders by 2, and you know your core clock.

Same thing I have been rockin for a while....E8600 @ 4.3 / X-25M SSD

Now that the GPU is out of the way I can finally make the jump to i7. I have been avoiding it because all I really do is game, and i7 shows almost no gaming benefit over the 45nm E/Q series.

10 minutes in BF:BC2, fan speed maxed out at 60%, GPU temp 84c.

Congrats OCGuy.

Hey Keys, question for you. Were you able to determine if a DX10 card can be used as a dedicated PhsyX card with Fermi as main, and the config be DX11 capable? Sorry if it's been covered somewhere already..

Still on the fence on what to do. Get a 470 and keep my E8400 setup? Or build a new machine + 470? Or just sit it out until next Winter and build a new machine. I am leaning towards just getting a 470 and keeping my current setup.

I've got an e8400 O'C'd @ 4.05ghz - my ram is holding me back from going higher - and I see absolutely no reason (for me) to upgrade right now from that.
