Well, this evening I started having some odd problems with my system. The nvidia driver (latest 263.09) started crashing and recovering. Also on the screen I would see video corruption (light pastel areas instead of the normal color and just general video weirdness).

I did uninstall/reinstall the video driver to no avail - it still exists.

Now, that being said, how can I best test the video card or at least figure out what is really going on here? Never had video problems before so I'm honestly at a loss on how to troubleshoot.

I've used driver sweeper as well.

GTX580 Black ops edition, win 7 ultimate

thanks for reading.

can you give more details about your setup?

i.e. cpu, ram, overclocking, etc...

I always uninstalled the nvidia drivers through control panel and then run driver cleaner before I shut down the computer. Then restart then install the drivers. I've went from nvidia to Ati then back to nvidia and then a different nvidia card all on the same operating system using the method above and I have 0 issues. I think you have a bad card. Do you ever get a green screen after the login?

Holy crap, check my thread--I had the exact same problem as you.

Replacing the card stopped the driver crashing, but only for a few days. Eventually went back to an ATI setup. In a way I'm really glad someone else is having the same error, I can rule out PSU and motherboard as causes. Prior to that I'd tried all kinds of stuff, documented most of it in the linked thread.

Please do try some of the fixes suggested in the other thread, I'm very curious as to whether your symptoms are in fact identical to mine.

EDIT: Wow, couldn't find many people with similar errors when they first happened to me, but now a search shows a lot of GTX 580 + driver crashing issues:

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1036562209 <- This guy did reinstall Windows, didn't solve it

Different card manufacturers (EVGA seems common, mine were Gigabytes) but either there are a ton of bad memory chips on these 580s or the drivers are very very bad (262.99, 263.09, and I tried the leaked/modded 265 drivers as well to no avail).

It was nice and constructive. I told you the card was faulty and it was a longstanding problem. Then I linked to a thread started by someone who had the same issue you're having now.

Did you even bother to read?

I've had this EVGA GTX 570 SC for about a week and I AM having the same EXACT issue. Video playback artifacts and unable to play games.

Driver crashes and recovers.

I just RMA'd my card, if the next one craps out on me I am going to have to go with ATI. Although I don't like the whole waiting for crossfire profile drivers for every random game.

I'm not sure it will help here but I had that issue with GTX285s in SLi, and my bro had it with 470s in SLi......memory swaps, mobos everything, nothing helped. We both upgraded to massive overkill level power supplies (Enermax Evolutions to be exact)..problem solved...in both cases. never had an issue since. Im guessing yours in not a PS issue but..figured Id add my .02

I'll let you know just as soon as the OP decides to do the most elementary troubleshooting task there is, try a different driver.

Not so fast. Someone already tried different drivers.

First of all, there are two--two--official drivers that support the 580, 262.99 and 263.09.

I tried both of them and the Quadro drivers modified to work with the GTX line. If you read any of the links to others having similar problems, it occurs in both versions, and changing between them doesn't stop the corruption once it's started.

Still, couldn't hurt for the OP to do the standard troubleshooting just to make sure we're all in the same boat...

Try underclocking it for a while to see if stability returns.

I like this idea.

And what Power Supply are you using? I know you gave specs but I don't recall seeing the brand and wattage of PSU.

Though if I were in your shoes i'd return the card. 500 bucks is no joke, I wouldn't expect to deal with these issues that point towards a hardware issue above anything else.

My 8800GTS512 from eVGA has the same issue. It happens the most in SC2. I noticed that the fan never spinned up, even as the card reached 70+ (I know, that's pretty low). And after it reaches around 70 (this probably varies from card to card), I would crash out of SC2. This was pretty consistent (Mean Time Between Crash is about 1-2 games).

I later installed RivaTuner to manually control the fans. Now I don't crash nearly as often. This issue also persisted through my Vista->Win7 reinstall. So the OS certainly doesn't seem to be an issue for me.

Basically, I think I got a crappy card. I believe my card is still under warranty?

I miss my card already, the colors are noticably more vivid / brighter then on my GTX 580.

I can't really offer anything concrete, but I can tell you what caused issues for me in the past.

1. memory, not gpu, but my system memory was faulty. at the time, I was using all 6 banks on my motherboard. It was causing some funky issues (probably related to the IOH/ICH, I was never able to solve it). I ended up going to 3 sticks of memory and hadn't had an issue (this was when I had 2 gtx 295's)

2. psu related... a while ago when I had 1 gtx 295, my psu at the time was insufficient. Yeah it would boot, and I could do everyday normal tasks, but doing anything heavy resulted in random things. Turn off, drivers crashed, blue screen, etc...

Goodluck in finding your issue... things like this are a major PIA to figure out. I've been where you are and was so close to trashing everything I had and starting from ground zero...

Well I RMA'd my 570 to newegg and now they are out of stock on the EVGA SC. Now I'm kinda tempted to get a 6950 and flash it to a 6970.

So as I understand it, all games will suck on a 6950 unless you have a Crossfire profile ? I've never owned an ATI card so I'm in the dark here.

A single 6950 doesn't need crossfire profiles. You only need Crossfire profiles if you are using crossfire.

Alright, I will call EVGA to RMA the card. Any idea how their customer service is? Do they send you a new card first so I have a shipping box?
