I can't decide for my next build (i7-3980X + 32-64GB).

Shuttle SX79R5 with single "superclocked" GTX 680 or go with a standard tower and SLI...

I've a wanted small and sleek super "toaster" SFF for the longest time, but the epeen factor of 3-4 way SLI GTX680... ugh.

I guess it comes down to if I'm happy with single card performance at 1600p.

I love the hardware but will only use it for gaming... not much of that going on these days... any hardware-taxing games coming out soon?

Normally I'd show my enthusiasm at a launch like this but, since everybody seems to do it in spades, I guess I'll ask the question that nobody wants to hear: How do we KNOW how this card actually performs?

So far we've only had a couple of dubious, unofficial performance figures form dubious sources, and some leaked slides form tomshardware where the tahiti cards perform much worse than in their launch review.

I don't think I'm being unreasonable here.

That's great stuff, thanks for taking the time!

Thanks Sir!

I think it's impressive that their VP actually addressed the negative feedback from Fermi in the video. It's good to know that these companies actually take gamers' feedback seriously.

but yet this 680 is the holy grail of gpu's

I don't think GTX680 @ $500 is a holy grail of GPUs. I think this launch is nothing special in terms of generational performance leap from GTX580 but it signifies more than that. Since HD4870/5870/6970/7970, it's been assumed by a lot of people that AMD's engineers had better knowledge/skill in designing the most efficient GPUs for gaming. With Kepler, this notion is out of the window. It seems G80 (8800GTX), GT200 (GTX280), GTX480 (Fermi) were large die chips because of their GPGPU backbone and FP64 support functionality. It really took NV just a change of direction to come up with a very efficient sub-300mm^2 chip. I think this is going to provide NV with confidence that not only can they design a very efficient chip, but they may still be able to maintain GPGPU lead when they launch 500mm^2 "Big Kepler."

This launch is more of a signal to AMD that NV is able to make both lean and efficient GPUs and still have the option of going with a 500mm^2 monster given their historical track record of designing large die chips. It appears AMD's untouchable trifecta - performance/mm^2, performance/watt, performance/transistor - is about to vanish. And that's a BIG deal for AMD since their core competitive advantage not only on the desktop space but in the mobile space has been efficiency.

Essentially if NV can design a more efficient architecture and still maintain the ability to scale that same architecture to larger 500mm^2 die GPUs, then AMD is losing out its key competitive advantages in all market segments. I hope AMD responds to this with Enhanced GCN in 2013. I think they can because Pitcairn is already a better designed chip than Tahiti is.

Good luck to everyone buying one. I'm too exhausted to stay up and order one. Look forward to your results

I hope it is EST, if PST I will have to hit the sack.

I have newegg.ca, computerbase.de, anand and hwc open. :awe:

Need to quickly assess 1600P performance and decide whether or not to order.

I'll wait for the reviews before jumping in. There are some particular things I'd like to know before committing 500 bucks.

I'm of the same mind. Then again, I need a new graphics card since my 5870 is starting to get some hiccups, and if I have to choose between a $500 680 and a $550 7970, I'm going to go with the cheaper part (helps that the leaked benchmarks showed the 680 was better at 1080P which is what I play at). If performance is basically identical, buy the cheaper one, right? The only way I could see it being a bad buy is if the scaling gets significantly worse at ultra-high resolutions (multi-monitor) because of insufficient VRAM. Doesn't affect me, so I may just bite the bullet even though I hate buying blind.

All the recent AMD launches were at midnight Eastern, so assuming nvidia goes by the same nda clock, I think you'll be in luck.

Cool beans...I love my 7970, but bought 2k shares of NVIDIA today (retirement fund) at $14.50...let's see how long it takes to get to $16.50...

No midnight launches this time around guys!

Tomorrow morning. 9:01AM. A new architecture from NVIDIA.

Stay tuned!!!

What's the over/under on when a site like donanimhaber "accidentally" breaking NDA early again?

Well, at least this means we'll all have a chance at a full night's sleep! All the other launches had me up reading into the wee hours.

On the other hand, this could make me late to work...

BTW, groove - won't you need at least two to beat what you've got? You don't need reviews and their exact percentages to tell you that. Just do it!

It's all going to come down to 1600p performance for me.. If 7970 wins at 1080p as suggested, hopefully they slash prices ^.^

Wonder when 4 gb 680 comes out, might wait for that too

or it might just be that Nvidia has delivered on giving us a much better value. Performance per dollar is significantly improved over the 40nm cards and AMDs current 28nm.

Everyone should be grateful for what Nvidia has done as now even AMDs line up should quickly shift down to be in line. The 680 is 15-20% faster than the 7970 and its 50$ cheaper. The 7970 will go down dramatically. This kind of stuff rarely happens. Nvidia is making the 28nm a better value and not just pricing this card in line with the 40nm performance. This should be what everyone wants, the much needed price shift that will benefit us all!!!

lol wut? we all know these cards aren't "top tier" cards yet they are priced at $500+ mainly as price gouge, not early adopters.

For me it is. Cool, quiet and fastest - what else you want?

This is first nvidia product I've been excited about in a long time. As many of you know I water-cool for a silent computing experience with higher end parts but even with cooler than GTX 480 GTX 580 hydro copper I have to turn my fans to about 1100 rpm on radiator making the experience not so silent. I am really looking forward to ~800 rpm again like with 9800GTX. As soon as water-blocks are available I'm in. Price is pretty good too. $60 cheaper than 7970 and faster? No brainer.
