There might be some threads about this already , but I didn't find so many.
NVIDIA just released the GTX780 and I am unsure about if I should get this or wait for AMD's new cards.
I currently have the Sapphire VAPOR-X 7970 Ghz, and some people think its fast enough but I dont. So I decided to sell it since there aren't coming any new games until end of August and either get the GTX780 or just use the built in gaming in my 3770k for surfing and movies until AMD releases a new card.

What do u guys think should I just get the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB PhysX CUDA or wait for AMD? I read some rumors about theyre new 9970 and the specs seems extreme compared to the GTX780
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-9970-vs-GeForce-GTX-780

Do u guys really think the new 9970 will be such a beast compared to Titan and GTX780?

Wont touch 780 let alone Titan

I'm selling the 7970 because I am not happy with the performance and I can get $400 for it. I think its way too noisy, I tried two 7970 in crossfire but that made even more noise and temps got really high.

If noise matters that much then get the 780GTX. I don't think I've ever heard it in gameplay. Very quiet.

The 780 has a nice quiet cooler and will give you a significant boost over the 7970. I don't expect AMD to have anything new this year.

i agree. i replaced a 7970 flashed to ghz edition with reference cooler in my wife's PC, and it was LOUD! replaced it with the gtx 780, and the most i can hear are the case fans when she's playing the sims.

I am waiting for the AMD VI 20nm possible by Q4 or Q1-14 imo and is worth waiting it out for the VI 20nm at this point.

Looking at C3 performance, I am afraid once PS4/XB1 3rd party titles start crossing to the PC in the next 8-9 months, because they have been designed without 512MB VRAM limitations and not around 7950GT/X1800XT GPUs, I am afraid the situation will soon start to look like C3 (i.e., all current gen cards will become too slow for next gen games).

I think the 780 will have to be a stop-gap short-term solution since 22-25% or even 30% faster is just not enough over existing $400 cards to handle next gen games.

RS what is your opinion if AMD decides to release a VI Hawaii 6-8GB/512-bit on a 28nm card before the 20nm is released as far as next gen games?
(using other specs you also believe/think to be on VI Hawaii core along with the above Vram/512-MIB)

AMD needs to release a VI 20nm card as early as possible before Maxwell and it will be a BIG win of course for AMD from a business standpoint as far as pr/marketing/new customers/performance per GTX/Titan and would increase market share to a nice degree the earlier it is released. So of course this is also part of my thinking (along with other research) why I think the 20nm is destined to be released sooner rather than later as long as no problems arise that is out of their control per 20nm process.

So people are saying next year for 20nm cards. Maybe next March. So just ask yourself what you want to use until then.

It is certainly a stop gap, but a stop gap without any other options in 2013.

The only time I heard it was when I manually set the fan above 70% in nvinspector. It's never touched that speed in auto fan settings no matter what game I play maxed out. Unigine Heaven/Valley also.

It's pretty shocking how easy it is to build a quiet gaming machine today compared to a few years ago. The corsair CPU water coolers are a big help. I had custom water years ago and the pump was constantly audible.

It would require divine intervention for that to happen this year so prayer is the only chance.

The problem with that strategy is all it does is make people who typically buy nVidia wait until nVidia comes out with a competing product vs. price. AMD would be far better off sticking to the status quo and making more money.

It's happened that nVidia could not produce an equivalent. Like in the 9800pro era. AMD getting that far ahead today would require a prayer. But I welcome it if they can pull it off.

I could be wrong, but I've seen it before. Even if AMD is 6 months ahead going to 20nm, like they were with 40nm.

I hope this but I hope they at least give me enough time to dump my 780.

Sorry but the price of the 780 GTX makes me laugh.

20% faster than the 7970 for more than double the price.

This is like BMW charging $40,000 for the 2.0L and then $80,000 for the 2.5L because its 20% larger engine gives 20% more HP.

Frames per second are not as valuable as Nvidia tries to make people believe. 20% wont make a game playable that is already struggling on a 7970.

That GPU should be 30% more than a 7970 maximum. Not 100% more.

Dont buy it. Thats is the only way to make them listen.

If you aren't going to be gaming until end of August, no point in buying a new GPU now. There could be price drops, something faster from AMD (or forces price drops on NV), or better after-market GTX780 cards such as GTX780 Lightning.

This.

Waiting for the Lightning 780 myself...

This type of pricing actually happens all the time. You are talking about the top 1% of gaming GPUs when you speak about 7950/7970/670/680/77/780/titan. Look at Porsche. It's double the price to go from a Carerra to a turbo (911).

These cards are not Camrys, they are high-end.

That aside, we are in the 'VC&G' forum, not the 'thrifty' forum. I totally get perf/$ (I like it too) but sometimes you just like to have the best, and you are willing to pay for it.

When I buy a pair of shoes, I get what I like. I don't say to myself that the $100 pair MUST be 2x the pair at $50. Is it 2x faster? Is it 2x as comfortable? That's just silly.

While I agree with you in spirit, nVidia is only charging what people are willing to pay. If I had $400 from a 7970 sale and could pony up the rest without much effort then I would likely pick up a 780. My only hesitation right now (apart from money and the 7970 working just fine for me) is the unknown of what the new consoles will bring to the table as far as gaming performance. For that main reason I will stick with the 7970 until next year at least. I'm not worried about the first release of games (like BF4) but the second group, the group that was built entirely on the developer boxes or the actual consoles, will likely be more than current gaming GPU's can handle.

nVidia is out to make money, and last I checked, they were doing decently at that. They want to sell products so the price reflects what people are willing to pay for the performance improvement and, in this case, the "newness" factor.

^This. We could haggle a bit about the exact numbers, but I agree totally with the sentiment. Tahiti is getting down to $350, which is where it belongs.

I wish everyone would listen to you.

Instead we get defenders.

These chips aren't even Camrys. Comparing them with a Porsche is just making excuses. These are simply mass produced chips. When they are new there's a need for a premium because of R&D, yields, etc... A year and a half later though, and they are simply rolling out of the fab as many as you would like. Titan and the 780 are actually defective parts and we are holding them up to the Holy Grail level of Stuttgart. Sorry, that's making excuses not sense.

Buy a 780 or wait for AMD's new graphic cards?

Does anybody know when AMD's new cards will be coming out? Q3 2013? Q4 2013? Q1 2014?

And did they release any possible specs on the new cards too?!
