There might be some threads about this already , but I didn't find so many.
NVIDIA just released the GTX780 and I am unsure about if I should get this or wait for AMD's new cards.
I currently have the Sapphire VAPOR-X 7970 Ghz, and some people think its fast enough but I dont. So I decided to sell it since there aren't coming any new games until end of August and either get the GTX780 or just use the built in gaming in my 3770k for surfing and movies until AMD releases a new card.

What do u guys think should I just get the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB PhysX CUDA or wait for AMD? I read some rumors about theyre new 9970 and the specs seems extreme compared to the GTX780

Do u guys really think the new 9970 will be such a beast compared to Titan and GTX780?

So far as those rumoured specs go I thought the 9970 would got with at least 6gb of vram especially considering that 4k monitors are slowly coming out a will become the norm in time.

"8970/9970" looks destined to be ahead of the Titan, but won't be out until September at the earliest.

I read that it might be out before Battlefield 4 releases.
Maybe I should just wait until the end of August since I probably wont be doing any gaming before that anyway. I know there's always coming something faster but if I buy the GTX 780 now and AMD releases something much faster in the next few months I guess I will regret lol

No, quite the opposite. I guess my double-negative was confusing.

What I meant to say was you have no reason to get a card now when you can wait for the new cards to come out, whenever that may be. You said it yourself, you don't plan on gaming anytime soon. So wait it out and see what happens. By that time, if the next flagship AMD card doesn't give you the e-boner you're looking for, the GTX 780 may have dropped in price.

Why do you feel the need to upgrade? If you're not going to game anyway, there's no point in upgrading at all.

If you are, the 780 isn't a great upgrade over a 7970. You're paying double the price for roughly 20-40% performance increase. If you really need more power, I think picking up a second 7970 will give you a much better return (if you are willing to deal with mGPU).

The 780 is a negligible upgrade over the 7970 GHz. Even if we assume 30% overclocking headroom for the 780 and only 20% for the 7970 GHz, it still doesn't justify the money spent. Get another 7970 GHz after the CrossFire fix is out or wait for 20nm.

I'm selling the 7970 because I am not happy with the performance and I can get $400 for it. I think its way too noisy, I tried two 7970 in crossfire but that made even more noise and temps got really high.

I'm not sure you would get $400 even now, as the 770s are out, and a few people have started dumping their 7970s..

On the other hand, if you're going to sell it anyways, I would consider a 780, since it's the only real upgrade over a 7970 (minus a Titan which isn't worth it unless you're going multiple Titans). And I'm sure the 780s will hold their prices decently well, but at this point you're still paying the new release price.

That is, until AMD releases their new lineup. GTC 780 just dived to below $600, that may indicate upcoming radeons.

Ah, you're in good hands. Well, it might be worthwhile to just stick it out on an iGPU and wait for prices to lower on the newer cards, especially if you know you're not going to game.

Where do you see this?

I agree that the 7970 is a good card. But after I bought this card I kinda regret that I didnt bought the GTX680 instead, because each game I played the 680 seemed to get around 10-20fps more than the 7970. It might be the drivers, but I feel like its been like this for a year. And I am also unsure if I want a AMD card again.

No he's saying since there are no big games coming out for a while, he might as well sell his 7970 because its value will only decrease over time.

Basically if there are no games you are interested in playing atm, you might as well get the 400 cash and use your computer for movies. Then when the games you want come out, see what the best card/deals are at that time. Better than using a 7970 to watch netflix for 3 months and then only being able to get $300 for it.

Sell the card, and buy a new one once the reviews come out.

Wouldn't you rather go with the GPU that is best suited for the game engine/game you play? Nvidia was better for the Unreal 3 engine. I noticed a positive difference switching from dual 5870s to a single GTX 480.

One thing though. Read THIS first. There is going to be a fight ahead!

I guess I should had done more researching when I bought it. It had been a while since I had upgraded and just read the reviews I found. 7970 came out as fastest, but it seemed to me that 680 had much higher FPS in games.

AMD has done some great work in the driver dept. with the 7970Ghz. I think it tops the 680 in most games these days.

If you want healthy competition that benefits the consumer, wait for the AMD

10-20FPS is a looooot more! The cards should be tied (statistically speaking, the 7970GE is ahead of the 680). Both cards deliver almost identical experiences, so I think you'll be disappointed if you expect 10-20FPS more

Since he has no card atm, I don't see how waiting is in his best interest, unless he just doesn't game much. It could be until next year before there is an improvement over the 780 from AMD.
