oops, is it another sabre-rattling move or do they really mean to go through with it?

I would not have guessed the NK dictator would want to start a war when he has been trying to consolidate power and support from his toadies for his chosen son but Kim Jong Il has always seemed a little unstable in the head so who knew.

Hate to say it but looks more and more like it will happen sooner or later. At least there will be less crappy chinese goods sold in the U.S. if it blows up into a full-scale war with NK.

My bet is on the status quo being maintained despite this. China does not see a war in the Korean peninsula as being in their interests. NK could lose everything and the same goes for SK. Bottom line, there may be a few more shots fired, sanctions instituted, strong language exchanged, but that is about it.

What makes you think China would necessarily back NK? If NK really does blow up into a war (which is still not necessarily likely at this point), China might very well seize the opportunity to install a more docile puppet. China and Lil' Kim aren't really all that cozy any more. It all depends on how the situation escalates.

On second thought it might not really depend on how it apparently escalates, because the narrative that gets played out in the public media could very well end up being a charade. The powers in the region have been planning for a very long time...

NK is part of the Axis of Evil. Looks like George Bush was right, yet again.

I have little faith in NK wanting peace. I wouldn't call sinking a ship saber rattling, that's what the US/SK is doing now.

I don't know. Seems like having your country blown up and then completely rebuilt on the USA dime isn't a bad deal for NK right now.

man it would be hard for me to imagine that the Chinese would not be irritated having us fighting in their backyard, they would LOSE a LOT of FACE allowing that to happen next door to them.

What could be a great outcome would be going to war with NK and that would cause the NK leader to have a fatal stroke then we would offer peace to whomever would take over his position.

What we'll do is go to the U.N. for more "resolutions", Obama is going to stand up and give North Korea yet another stern talking to. Obama will wag his finger forcefully. And the international community will say a huge "fuck you" while Iran watches all of this and continues pursuing their own nuclear weapons without a hint of fear.

My read of the short term tea leaves is steeped up joint US and South Korean anti submarine patrols.

And it may just slake South Korean revenge if we send a North Korean sub or two into Davy Jone's locker. But the down side may be if one of those subs are Russian, Chinese, US, or South Korean.

Sure is nice of them to give us warning so we can get out the biggest paddle possible to spank Kim Jong.

Has anyone considered what SK wants? I mean, it was their ship after all. AFAIK, Soul has made the decision to take this to the security council.

And as nutty and inane as Spidey's post is (par for the course for him). He's right that sinking a ship is not sabre rattling. It's an act of war.

ummm it was the South Korean president who was doing the sabre rattling.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/05/25/n.korea.threats/?hpt=T1

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak announced Monday that his country was suspending trade with North Korea, closing its waters to the North's ships and adopting a newly-aggressive military posture toward its neighbor.

AFAIK SK wants an admission and an apology. NK still claims it wasn't them and is pissed off the blame is being put on them. Since NK won't take responsibility for sinking their ship, SK is only responding in kind and doing what they need to do.

So it's basically - "He started it!" He being NK with an act of war. It could have been tempered if NK just said "oops, sorry, yeah, my mistake let's work something out". But no, NK is acting like they wanted to intentionally provok by sinking the ship.

And none of those things involve direct miliary action. My point is that SK has not asked for any direct retaliation. They are seeking resolution of the incident from the U.N.

Separate from that, they have adopted a more confrontational stance toward NK as a result of the attack.

if our government is dumb enough to start another war when we have to borrow lots of money from China to fund the one we have now then our country is doomed.

Maybe you missed the part where NK committed an act of war against our ally?

The U.S. would not be "starting" anything if we were to support SK in their response against NK. In fact, the war between NK and SK never even ended, so you'll have to go back half a century, or more, to begin discussing who "started" it...

What is the alternative? We could pull the dozen troops are aren't currently fucking around in Iraq and Afganistan and send them to Korea, that would accomplish a lot.

I think they have to deny it. Isn't sinking a ship without a declaration of war is a war crime? But Christ, we have their torpedo, it doesn't get any more obvious than that.

Also:

Jiang Yu, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Government, said that peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in the region was in the interest of all parties, and China would not tolerate any actions that would disturb that peace.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article7136011.ece

Fucking assholes. I would call sinking a ship an action that would "disturb the peace" and China sure seems to have tolerated that one. It would fuck Beijing six ways from Sunday if we ever reduced our trade with them, we need to put more pressure on the Chinese.

That Chinese statement actually paints NK into a corner since they are undeniably the aggressor. If NK can't count on Chinese support they'll just continue to make bellicose statements from their shithole and not actually do anything.

i am fully aware of the cease fire that NK/SK has and the history of the Korean war. my dad served in the Korean war and i was stationed at Osan Air Base for a time. My point is that we as a country can not afford the monetary cost of a full scale engagement with North Korea.

Doesn't take much to man a battleship and fire shots in to the mainland.
