I know it's a small country, but how far can artillery shoot? I've seen stuff for traditional artillery (not rocket-assisted) as having a max range of ~20km. Isn't Seoul more than 20km from the DMZ?

Here's a thread from another forum with a lot of info:

Seems it caught the attention of Business Insider newsletter, though they sorta misinterpreted it:

thanks for sharing heheh reading now

’Dear Leader’…
Your government is the most insecure and insular on earth so you won’t like this. Your cyber warfare forces, Unit 211, regularly attacks South Korean government and maybe US Government websites but you have yet to prevent Google Earth showing anyone in the free world most of your military facilities. Maybe one day you will succeed in launching a satellite so you can do what I think certain other countries do which is take imagery of your own country, censor it then sell it to Google cheaper than providers without censoring would. Google Earth can demystify your secret armies and further mock your propaganda and self-delusions. On behalf of MilitaryPhotos.com I’d like to say “welcome to the internet”

The market is bi-polar right now. There was nothing but bad news between the oil spill, Europe and North Korea, Housing Prices and Financials, and it closes down 22 points.

A couple of days ago we had bunch of excellent news and it crashed. I suspect that a lot of traders take advantage of good news as an opportunity to sell, and bad news as a chance to scoop up cheap stocks, but that's pure speculation.

I see what you did there!

Thanks.

That pretty much confirmed what I thought - Seoul isn't really in danger from artillery fire stationed near the DMZ, as most of it is not close enough. The real danger would come from short to medium range missiles, but in that case, most of the country would be in danger from those.

Has anyone considered what SK wants? I mean, it was their ship after all. AFAIK, Soul has made the decision to take this to the security council.

This. Let SK handle the matter. The US has no business making threats or having talks with NK about this, because 1) SK needs to handle this matter and 2) Getting the US involved is EXACTLY what NK wants.

Oh, and those who think China will back NK and go to war to save them are wrong. Seriously, China has much, much more to lose by supporting NK in a war than they do by staying neutral or backing SK.

So here is a question for the "progressives" here.

Considering the fact that the "progressive" lambasted George W. Bush for his "preemptive strike" philosophy, should a stealth bomber strike designed to take out North Korea's nuclear capabilities be off the table?

46 people died and the tensions are rising. But we are not quite there yet. US can't just pre-emtively attack on NK soil. NK killed SKns, not Americans. We are not there yet.

Quoted for truth

Seems the internet kiddies here are all gung-ho to go fight a war, but they don't realize how bad war is. I think they play too much BF2 or whatever, and think it's all a game.

As I noted in another thread, we fought a "cold" war with the USSR for 40+ years, had 100+ US military killed, several planes shot down, and yet we never went to war with them, we never started bombing or launching missiles at them. We overflew the USSR with military planes, and they didn't start a war with us either.

So please grow up, read some history about how bad war is, and stop thinking like you are GI Joe or playing some computer game. The last time the NK's invaded, ~35,000 US soldiers died, and over 3 million Koreans of both sides killed, not to mention a bunch of Chinese. That is a huge amount of people killed to satisfy your tough-guy status.

a confrontation between NK and SK is inevitable. it will happen some day.

the question is - will the US exercise its obligations under the south korean defense umbrella, or we would have had already evacuated our troops by then?

our entire presence in SK is to act as a detterent against NK aggression. If NK isn't dettered, and war is coming - our leaders have to make a decision.

a preemptive strike makes perfect sense if we're looking to minimize US and SK casualties. if we wait to be attacked by NK, we'll be sacrificing loads of our soldiers for the moral/legal high ground.

yes, war is always a moral outrage but we have to look at this pragmatically and not as some knee-jerk reactionary leftist appeasement.

So stopping the holocaust was a moral outrage?

Got it.

We did not enter WW2 to save people from the holocaust, just as we did not enter WW1 to "make the world safe for Democracy" and The Confederacy was not invaded to "free the slaves." I am not saying that the previously mentioned goals are not noble, just that they are not the reasons we went to war.

I still have my fingers crossed that the PRC will bitch-slap Kim before he gets too out of hand. That is likely the best way to avoid further military confrontation. If China stops supporting him, his government will fall and they can put a better puppet in control of North Korea for their buffer zone.

No the US will not want to engage in any war with the NK. Simply put, the US does not have any war capacity left to deal with NK. It only takes a second of stupidity to cause several generations of needless suffering. So relax with the stupidity.
