Guess what I get to play with :)

Remember that guy who thought he fubared a Cisco 2900 series switch? Well now he has access to this!

My boss is gone to teach me the ins and outs of BGP and other technical routing stuff!!! Is BGP even on the CCNA stuff? I am reading the book "Basic Cisco Router Configuration" and it just had a blurb on BGP and spent most of its time with RIP and IGRP.

It's scary how much power I got now

BGP = not on CCNA
BGP = very high-level function

j00 = 0wnz m3!!!

enjoy the new knowledge. ain't nuthin' like it nowhere!

Luck . I consider myself very fortunate with this job. I don't think many companies like this would hire a 22yo n00b like me.

TallGeese - I will never ownz j00 You probably give answers to people 95% and ask questions the other 5% of the time. I am the other way around

from a hardware standpoint, the 7200 you're getting to work on definitely 0wnz!

said it before, and I'll say it again:
you've got a pretty cool boss there.
be sure and let him know you think so (in a non-sucking-up way, of course )

BGP is probably the most fun you can have with an IP router, to get a head start with BGP you may want a copy of the Cisco Press book by Sam Halabi "Internet Routing Architectures second edition" and both volumes of Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP also cisco press. They're the best references (bar the RFC's) that I have.

TallGeese - Is my boss cool, or is he just foolish

FFC - I saw that book for 50% at my local computer book store! I am studying for my CCNA right now, would learning BGP confuse me at all when studying for CCNA related material? Am I going to look at a question and answer it using BGP stuff when I should have answered it with the material from the CCNA study guides?

At this point of your career, I'd try steer clear of BGP, other than at a conceptual level, unless someone really wants you to learn it. It's an extremely sophisticated protocol and delves very deeply into your knowledge of Cisco and IP. Put it this way.. I don't mess with it. *grin* Of course, I've never really needed to - That's what engineers are for!

I'll bet that I know the #1 thing you'll get out of playing with a 7200. "Oh my god, this is EXACTLY like the little ones!" That's the key with Cisco. From their smallest "real" router (800-series) to the big bad boys, it's the same interface, same commands, etc. Understanding how Ciscos work is key, but understanding the fudemenal technologies is even more important.

Garion - That's pretty much the level I am learning at now. The router is configured and is working great, but my boss would like another person in the company to develope some sort of understanding of it just so that I can actually be some help when it comes to trouble-shooting and so that he can leave on a week long vacation and not have to worry about his pager going crazy

I see what you mean about the interface being the same! After practicing lots of things on the Cisco 2900 switch I feel comfortable looking around the 7200. I think that is what a CCNA is all about isn't it (understanding the interface)? Understanding the protocols at a low level is the next step I guess.

Do this first for BGP if you are actually exchanging with the Internet tables.

Second (and this really is trying to help) do not be scared of it. The 7200s are JUST another router. Same thing as the 2600s except WAY more processor and interface options.

First thing you should do is post a "show interface" and "show proc CPU". Let's see just how underutilized that puppy is! My guess is under 10%.

I bet it's more under utilized than that since we haven't move all of our network to it yet.

It is at 6% right now... We have about half of our network hooked up, and it is a dead time right now. I will see what it's like on a Monday afternoon.

I couldn't copy and post because I had to telnet to the router from a VNC session on another computer... The "show int" is very large too, and probably has
some private information that I shouldn't be disclosing (information of dedicated access customers is in there).

how 'bout a "show ver"

I'll try to post our ints.

hope this helps....

Spidey why no loopback interface? Do you use them or did you just miss it off?

FFC,

omitted from the post. you think with that many neighbors I wouldn't be using a loopback? I'm waiting for someone to poke holes in the IPX configuration. Heck you can poke holes in the OSPF as well.

anybody....?

Pick holes? Moi? Well under normal circumstances I would be more specific about how I apply my ospf process, and I can't comment on the IPX because you have no routing process details (surely you aren't running IPX RIP across F/R without filters).
