R1T is pretty slick, there are a fair amount of them in Northern Cal since employees got first dibs. Have a few friends who work there but haven't had a chance to take it for a spin yet. Lots of crossover from my friends who own Teslas have ordered R1T or R1S, many cool little touches and can be kitted out for camping etc.

First EV ride is definitely eyeopening experience. But what's even way better is the first EV drive. The instant power and torque are so much fun and it never gets old. It's like piloting super fast rollercoaster you manually control. You should definitely try to test drive an EV. Maybe even a Tesla.

Disagree on this one, EV has instant acceleration but that kind of about it - driving dynamics leave a lot to be desired. Got the MYLR vs MYP bc going fast in a straight line wears off pretty fast.

Will it get there, I'm sure but not there yet and EVs move so quickly anything you buy now will be obsolete in a few years. Did consider a Taycan Turbo to replace my 911 but its not really the same class of car, maybe the Tesla Roadster will finally do it.

Rivian bed size is 4.5 ft. Yeah, that's real useful as a truck bed. lol.

Rivian wants to be Land Rover of EV. That's their clientele and target market. Rich people care about fashion. They don't want to drive something that looks like boring Ford Ranger.
Hey now don't go dissing on the capability of a 4.5' bed. Like I mentioned above we just bought a new 2022 Ford Maverick and guess what size bed it has? If a 4.5' bed is not enough bed to be a "real truck" don't tell my wife that because she was able to load enough 2x4x10s, 2x6x10s, and 2x8x10s in the bed with no problems. It was enough material to build a new raised bed veggie box for our garden.

Add all that lumber plus a couple of 4'x8' corrugated galvanized steal sheets in the bed of her Mav and she will tell you that 4.5' bed is plenty. I don't very often but in this case it seems justified.
A 4.5' bed is plenty for your average truck owner. Prove me wrong.

Thing is 95% of real-world driving thrills take place between 0-60.

Unless you live where it doesn't get cold AND the roads are long, flat and straight, sustaining super-high speed isn't happening much on American roads no matter what you drive.

Technically you don't even need a truck if you want to haul!

I think the idea of 8 foot boxes is a thing of the past though, especially for EVs, so I would probably just get trailer. Maybe even go with a big flat bed so I could do 16' lumber easily. I've done 14' in my truck by leaning against tailgate and tying it down well but I would not want to go very far with that.

Not sure what lengths steel usually comes in, but I do eventually want to get into welding so I would want a way to transport that. Pretty sure they come in fairly long lengths so pretty much want a trailer anyway.

I have a longer cargo-bed in my tiny Honda with the seat folded!

Seriously I would shoot for at least 6-7 feet myself but in a sense I agree, the best thing about a pickup over an SUV is that whatever you're hauling is OUTSIDE the passenger-compartment!

Even these were useful!

Fit this snow blower in your Honda and I'll be impressed.
Gah!! I had to bust out the colbert again.....damn you @brianmanahan for keeping the dead emojis alive in this thread.

I can't see your snow-blower well enough to tell for sure but my old John Deer (Ariens) 10hp track-drive made it into my '97 Impreza Outback and it had substantially less usable space then the Fit does! (the handles on the blower folded down)

Pickups however are EXPONENTIALLY better for this sort of thing!

EDIT: I see they included the Lincoln-style combination-lock dial... nice!

My dakota has a 6.5' bed, and I consider that minimal, and optimal for my purposes. I know this because I sometimes wish I had a bigger bed, but mostly it's sufficient, and saves space moving around. I have no use for a crew cab truck. I like extended cabs. You can fit people in the back if you really have to, but you don't want to. Get rid of some of that cab, give me more bed, and I'll learn to like the front end.

No disrespect intended! Only respect for your wife.

I've hauled plenty of large items with my Tundra truck 6.5 ft bed like 16 ft wood lumber. Not saying it can't be done with shorter bed but more space is nice that 5% of the time when you need it.

I do like the Chevy Avalanche folding mid-gate setup where you can lower the backseat and the mid-gate to give you like 8 ft bed when you need it. I'm hoping Tesla does something similar with the Cybertruck as it would be helpful for sleeping while car camping.

I believe the "asshole" Bimmer owners have shown the world that acceleration and handling from 0-60 is far more capable in those cars than econoboxes.

You don't know the willpower it has taken me to not to order Tesla Model S Plaid. It's good thing Tesla raised the price by $16k since I first considered it or I might have given in. But I must stay strong and wait for the Cybertruck. That's my true love.

I haven't had a chance to take out the Plaid yet, but the one before it was stupid fast. Like "punch you in the chest when you hit it" fast. A zero to 2.9-second truck is going to be quite the experience lol

The first time you punch it in a fast full-EV is quite the experience!

Unless you've ridden a big Japanese sport-bike or maybe driven an ICE super-car you are just not prepared for the instant-speed. 0-35 or so in particular is a real rush! (and I love eye-ball flattening acceleration!)

Even so I doubt my next car will be full-electric until the infrastructure matures.... far more likely it will be a plug-in hybrid.

Even people who claim to have time in fast cars are caught by surprise in my lowly 3P. Granted, these are probably people who would be impressed with stock Gallardo acceleration. But nobody is ever prepared for that 0-60 hit and it makes grown men giggle like children. So much fun.

Its not so much the whole 0-60 in an EV it's that first 100 ft or so from a dead-stop that's downright startling!

Wow, that thing is ugly, especially the front end. Never thought I'd say this, but the Cybertruck looks better.

Yeah looks are subjective though. I personally don't think the R1T looks that bad especially in person. IMO photos just don't do it justice because in person it looked really cool and it is just "odd" enough to stand out from your everyday F150, Silverado, Taco, Ram, ect.

Dat performance though....omg it has been two days and my mind is STILL reeling about fast it was! I personally think that it is hands down the fastest I will ever go from 0 mph to 60 mph in my whole life. haha

It looks a little better in blue, but those lines are just... bleh. I believe it about the acceleration. I wonder how it compares with the amusement park Rip Cord ride (where they drop you), allegedly you hit up to 80MPH on that, and it can't be more than a few seconds.

After a certain point in acceleration and raw horsepower/torque it stops mattering WHAT is making the power and becomes more about controlling said power while still being semi-comfortably street-drivable.

Passenger-cars are fast approaching those limits right now with 700-800hp + and AI-powered AWD/suspension systems.

Point being you might go slightly faster 0-60 in a production car but it will only be slightly.

EDIT: Then again....

The Hennessey Venom GT did 0-186 mph in 14.51 seconds in 2013.

The Rimac Nevera is cartoonishley faster @ 0-100 mph in 3.4 seconds then another 6.7 seconds to 200! (1900+ hp and 1.3 million dollars this is the car that almost killed Richard Hammond)

Then there's these guys! *(slightly dated)

It would be left for dead by King DaKa @ Great Adventure which does 0-128 mph in 3.5 seconds.

But on the Rip Cord, you get whatever existential terror your brain induces when you see that you're plummeting straight for terra firma, never gotten that from a coaster

The "terror" for me on those things is wondering if the dippy teenagers who are usually operating them have any freaking clue at all or if the park has been keeping up with maintenance!

It seems some fear of death on these things is perfectly reasonable!
