That's very classy of them
And stupid. By doing both at the same time, they are establishing a link between age and layoff, potentially inviting age discrimination lawsuits. What kind of amateur HR operation are they running over there?

30 years? Nice pension and retirement. Congratulate him. He was a loyal hard working employee and raised a nice family off the income derived from 30 years of service to a great company.

Now he can go fishing with you, maybe up to Alaska. Or take a vacation to a warmer climate. Whatever. Sounds like a time to celebrate, not feel bad. He surely knew that this was coming and probably looked forward to it.

Cheers to your Dad.

BustaRhyme: He will be 54 in february. He doesn't qualify for early retirement until 55. He doesnt get full retirement until he is 65.

John: he had about $65k in retirement saved up I think. He had to take out a $25k(I think I can't remember the exact amount) loan against his retirement to refinance and pay off all of the bills, so there is a big chunk taken out of that. Also he and my mom are diabetic, so they NEED their health insurance and he will be paying $250 a month to keep his insurance, and $250 a month to keep my moms insurance.

Also, my younger brother is still in high school. They still are his only support.

Man, sept. 11 really took a toll on Boeing.

It's crazy, on September 10th i went to a boeing info session at my college, and they were talking about hiring like mad

THEN, the 11th goes down, and practically overnight they laid off like what, 30,000 people or something?

It's crazy...sorry to hear about your dad

did he get any compensation for being let go?

It's not just 9/11.... also because of boeing losing the JSF contract. My dad was working on the prototype, and that is what he would be workin on right now had boeing got the contract.
Boeings biggest mistake is letting the execs from McDonald Douglas(spelling?) keep positions of power. They brought their own company to the ground, and now Boeing. Also Boeing exec's don't want to lose their stock bonuses and stuff. My aunt got laid off a few years ago (after about 20 years) because of the same thing, Boeing lays people off, stocks go up, meet goals, executives get their bonuses.

I think having JSF replace most fighters is a mistake. First of all, if there is problem with JSF like Osprey, we might need to ground all of these fighters in USMC, USAF, and NAVY. Also, giving all the fighter business to Lockheed means that Boeing will stop building fighters, and in the future we'll have to pay more because of less competition.

Damn, I always hate this when it happens. A lot of companies are doing this nowaday!
Sorry for the bad news. I hope he's saved up his 401K.

Man, The Bushs' seems always bringing bad luck.
Just only one year in his term, the budget is in red ink already.

Wow, did not know that a bunch of hypocrites populate this forum.

This fourm is famous for its staunch hatred for workers unions and anything else to do with employee relations and welfare.

But now you all pretend to shed a tear for this poor guy? BS!

Tomorrow you'll be back spoutin' off about how loathsome employment laws and regulations are, about how awfull it is that large corporations must pay severence
pay to recently laid iff workers, etc. Dumb hypocrites.

You are a friggin idiot man. Can't you let your hate for people go for just a minute and just say, "Sorry to hear that man, hope everything works out."

Sorry for being so harsh, but this thread is not the time to be bashing people.

First of all, I would like to offer my sympathy to your present situation. It seems that most of the country's long-time profitable businesses are dying slowly...Recently Kmart and Service Merchandise in the Retail sector..

As for the unsympathetic fellow, get a life. This man has been working for a top-level corporation for 30years. Obviously he knows his stuff, and deserves that much repect. To come bash us all for actually caring about people's well being is the lowest form an argument can take and negates any repect for any arguments you make from then on.

Regardless of what people argue concerning business problems, there comes a neutral period when we grieve for our losses.
