Are you guys happy with your Zunes? I've heard they require proprietary software like the Ipods though.

I was doing some research on it and DRM as noted by Dark...won't buy one now. Should have known since it's coming from MS. There's too many restrictions on what you can play on the device.

Care to explain? None of my music has DRM so this probably doesn't affect me.

Of course. As we all know, every other PMP on the market comes with absolutely no DRM or artificial restrictions whatsoever.

Microsoft gets a lot of shit, but come on. DRM? You really going to put that on them and them alone?

So it can't play DRM files from other sources? Sounds kinda like how you can't play Apple's DRM files on anything but the ipod, eh?

Anyway I don't have any DRM music so I couldn't care less. I am seriously considering getting one. Are there any other mp3 players that hold as much for this price?

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on this Zune...

So wait a minute here, can I or can I NOT play non-drm music on this thing? I'm too tired to read the links above.

I either rip my own music, or buy DRM-free music from Amazon.

Will it play, and what are the restrictions?

No restrictions for non-drm music.

I'm actually tempted by woot's frequent Zune deals, but money is too tight right now.

Yeah, same here. Otherwise I would have already pulled the trigger. I just bought that $350 Acer laptop from walmart last week.

It plays MP3 and unprotected WMA just fine.

MS decided to ignore their existing "PlaysForSure" DRM, so you can't use it as a player for NapsterToGo or Rhapsody. I don't think you can even -buy- MS' DRM protected songs from Napster, Amazon, etc. you must buy them from the MS Zune Store.

The "squirting" of songs to other Zune owners (if you can find one) will still be useless even with the 11/13 firmware: the songs stop working after 3 plays.

Amazon was selling new ones for less, no?

Why buy refurbished?

If DRM is an issue then vote with your wallet and only buy DRM free tracks. There's 3 ok sources (well soon there will be), iTunes, the Zune Marketplace (should be rolled out with the new software), and then Amazon. And of course the vast majority of CDs are DRM free, and will likely offer the highest quality you can get quite a bit of music at.

The color. Some people can't stand the brown for some reason. I think its odd when a lot of those same people buy a protective case or skin for it where you never see it.
