WOW! I just checked out some of the links you gave, about cleaning up the backround processes, my system memory usage went from 29% idle, to 22%, my HD swap space is at 8%, and my virtual memory is only utilizing 13%. I'm suprised I got that much memory freed up! Thanks for a great thread!

hello mitchafi,

(still working on a proper tempelate for this kinda stuff)

The following are safe to disable (easy to renable if you have problems later)via MSCONFIG:

[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Logitech Utility] Logi_MwX.Exe (Only disable this if you are not using the non standard functions of your logitech device)
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe (Only required if you use Win2K/XP and login without admin privileges)
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "F:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

NOtes:
ctfmon.exe info here.

Thanks for the tips, just disabled the 2nd and 3rd bullets. By "non standard functions" do you mean the extra buttons on the MX500? Interesting information about the ctfmon.exe, always wondered what that was.

This is not that great an idea. Fine to evaluate it, but then remove it from the run keys or from wherever it loads. M$ stresses that msconfig is a troubleshooting utility and that the computer should be returned to normal mode at the conclusion of troubleshooting.

hello bigboxes,

MALWARE REMOVAL
the following are malicious, and should be deleted using hijackthis

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Disable system restore, malware can come back through it.
3. Reboot into safe mode.
4. Close all browsers/windows explorer.

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe"
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe 1
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart
  • O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe (HKCU)
  • O16 - DPF: {2B96D5CC-C5B5-49A5-A69D-CC0A30F9028C} (MiniBugTransporterX Class) - http://download.weatherbug.com...iniBugTransporter.cab?
  • O16 - DPF: {96AD66E6-8375-4864-8F4D-0F15023C2AF6} (CWUInstall Object) - http://www.wunderground.com/windowsinstall/weather.cab

Additional Steps

1. Clear your Temporary Files
2. Remove the following VIA instructions provided:
[*]WeatherCast Adware
[*]Uninstall MessengerPlus3 from the Add/Remove programs
[*]Uninstall WeatherBug/WeatherCast from Add/Remove programs
3.Restart into normal windows

Notes
[*] MessengerPlus3 bundles the Lop.Com Adware with it. Look for alternatives.
[*] The weatherbug bundles adware with it, look for spyware free alternatives.

Performance
The following are not malicous, and are being suggested to be removed to free up resources. Use MSCONFIG to disable the entries that i suggest and then, if you find that it is not causing any issues by having them disabled, remove the entries via hijackthis.

Disable the following in MSCONFIG:.
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
[*]O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [StatBar] C:\Program Files\Globe Software\StatBar\StatBar.exe This is a resource hog, look for alternative products or just start it when you need to monitor it and dont leave it running in the background, info here.
[*]O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background Disable only if you do not want MSN messanger starting when windows does

hello Zeppelin2282,

MALWARE REMOVAL
the following are malicious, and should be deleted using hijackthis

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Disable system restore, malware can come back through it.
3. Reboot into safe mode.
4. Close all browsers/windows explorer.

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)
  • N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://www.musicianforums.com/...s/forumdisplay.php?f=7"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\ln8qxfs8.slt\prefs.js)
    N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%5Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\ln8qxfs8.slt\prefs.js)
    O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
    O2 - BHO: myBar BHO - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: &SearchBar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL

Additional Steps

1. Clear your Temporary Files
2. Remove the following VIA instructions provided:
[*]MySearchBar Adware
3. Delete the following folder:
[*]C:\Program Files\MyWay
4.Restart into normal windows

PERFORMANCE
The following are not malicous, and are being suggested to be removed to free up resources. Use MSCONFIG to disable the entries that i suggest and then, if you find that it is not causing any issues by having them disabled, remove the entries via hijackthis.

Disable the following in MSCONFIG:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTStartup] "C:\Program Files\Creative\Splash Screen\CTEaxSpl.EXE" /run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl (DISABLE ONLY IF YOU DO NOT WANT AIM STARTING UPON SYSTEM BOOT)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Steam] "c:\valve\steam\steam.exe" -silent (CONSUMES RESOURCES WHILE SITTING IN THE TRAY, CAN BE EASLY STARTED MANUALLY, NO NEED FOR IT TO START WITH WINDOWS)

hello naruto1988,

you got yours stripped down pretty far. atiptaxx.exe can be disabled safely, you can change any setting you want by going thru Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display. All it does is sit in your tray.

hello Doboji,

The following are safe to disable (easy to renable if you have problems later)via MSCONFIG, if you find you have no problems leaving it disabled, remove the entry via hijackthis:

[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\System32\NeroCheck.exe (only required if you log into Win2k and XP without administartor privalages)
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup (only required if you overclock your video card)
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Disc Detector] C:\Program Files\Creative\ShareDLL\CtNotify.exe
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Register MediaRing Talk] C:\Program Files\MediaRing Talk\register.exe
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
[*]O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [$MindmakerRebootRequest$] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Regsvr32.exe /s (THIS APPEARS MALICOUS)
[*]O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE (SPEEDS UP OFFICE WHEN YOU FIRST LAUNCH IT, BUT DOES TAKE UP SYSTEM RESOURCES)

btw, im just trying to make the bold terms not mix in with the rest, not trying to shout at any of you
