So you're dissappointed it's not more D&D-ish? Then don't play it.

I think this is the heart of the problem. From what I've read, GW has very little to do with role-playing. It's always being compared to Magic: The Gathering. It's a strategy game with some action thrown in.

It sounds like GW just decided to add an "archer" class and call it "ranger". It sounds like their definition of ranger is just different than yours.

Perhaps you should choose warrior as your main class and just call yourself a ranger for role-play purposes. If you've played table-top RPGs then you know that no one goes around referring to themself by class ("I'm Zaragorn, the level 12 ranger..."). They choose a race/class combo for stats and skills, then role-play it how they want ("I'm Zaragorn, protector of the King's Forest...").

If you're really looking for role-playing, I don't think GW is the game for it. From what I've read, it's all about team-deathmatch skill contests.

GW is a great role-playing game, perhaps the best I've ever played. The world is absolutely huge, the quests are great fun and there are lots of them.

There is great diversity in how you build your character, you can play solo with several very different henchmen, you pick the ones you want to create the kind of party you want.

I've played the game for hundreds of hours, not just read about it. It's really at least 2 huge games in one, pvp, and a gigantic rpg game that can be played like any great rpg, with virtually no pvp, if that's a person's preference.

I'm disappointed by the simplicity and restrictions. I've bought the game to play with a friend who has yet to even install it, and it's lame. Six classes, each restricted.. very little customization. Only one race, bodies restricted by class.
I'm playing a ranger and I HAVE to use a bow. Melee sucks, even with warrior 2nd class. Who ever heard of a game restricting rangers to archery?

Should have bought a D&D based game instead.

Why would you be a ranger if you wanted to melee? That's like picking a priest to nuke people

Because Rangers are supposed to be skilled swordsmen, in addition to skilled archers. You shouldn't even know a ranger is lurking in the trees until the arrow goes through your throat or they drop from above and slice up your entire party in seconds.

The game has to be balanced for PvP. You can't have a character who is strong with a sword and with a bow. You can have one that is strong with the sword and ok with a bow, or strong with bow and ok with sword... not both.

Rangers in other games can be strong with either melee weapons OR bows. Look at D&D games like NWN for example. A ranger has a choice of bows, knives, rapiers, short swords, long swords, katanas....

And about a ranger stabbing a rabbit with a sword.. That has nothing to do with being a ranger. You could hunt animals with a very low archery skill, sharpened sticks, tomahawks, etc.

A ranger can be awesome at melee in GW. So can a mesmer. You have received bad information somewhere if you think only warriors are good at melee.

For instance, a great ranger spell, APPLY POISON, works with melee weapons. There is also a way to take advantage of the ranger's armor having extra defense against elemental damage, and convert all damage to elemental damage, so that ranger armor can be great armor.

You can also use ranger preperations to speed up attacks, and recharges.

Use traps while your meleeing to increase damage, or heal you and your allies. Have a pet bear, spider, wolf, fight along side of you to increase your melee damage.

There are specific builds for melee rangers that people have worked out. Theres a way to speed up the use of hammers using a ranger, which are quite slow when used by a warrior.

And rangers aren't the only one to use bows either. An elementalist can shoot arrows that have fantasitc elemental damage, for instance.

As I said before, mesmers can melee with illusionary weapons.

Necros can be fantastic at a kind of in close fighting, bleeding their opponents.

And of course, every character gets 2 of these classes, and which one is primary matters, so you consider there are 60 or so combos, and tons of skills to choose from for each class, there are many many ways to have an effective character.

Every game I've ever played, a ranger has always been universally weaker with a sword than a straight up warrior.

Also, if you wanted to be a melee oriented ranger, you should have gone war/rng. If you wanted to be a ranged based character that can melee, you would have gone rng/war. This is pure balance.

I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said... If you could use every weapon in the game as well as anybody else, then the classes would be poinless and the balance would be messed up.

I'm glad GW isn't like every other RPG, cuz the rehashes are getting dam boring. If you want to drop fifty bucks on another D&D based RPG then have fun, none of them are good. Rangers have always been associated w/ bows. It's a plain fact... Looking back at Diablo I'm pretty sure I remember rangers starting w/ a bow.

I love my ranger. He sits back and deals massive amounts of AOE fire damage with a bow. He sets suppressing spirits that increase damage on creaures by whole party, he bleeds, poisons, traps and antagonizes almost any creture in range, he is fast, he can heal, and most of this from 100+ feet away from the melee. That is just in PVE. In GvG or PvP he is a hated class right now just from the problems he brings to the match with spirts alone.

I personally like to be 100+ feet away from the slashing and smashing. I take it for what it is and I enjoy it. Anyone that doesn''t can PM me to sell me his game.

Think back to the good old days of RPGs: Baldur's Gate and BG2... did you have Minsc, a ranger, be your main tank, or did you have him as the archer?

I used him as my tank.

Warcraft 2 Rangers are Archers

I have seen mages do quite some damage in melee, granted it makes my job as a healer really hard cause they wear like no armor but still. The reason people would say rangers are bad at anything is simply because they are mroe usefull else where. Alot of their skills make them more adept to fighting from range (dodge, archery, even pet skills) but that doesn't make them terrible in melee but no single character can be a jack of all trades you have to choose based on your skills and attributes what makes the most sense. A warrior can be better in melee thatn a ranger anyday of the week and a wizard can cast better than most warriors but warriors can still get in some powerful spells if classed as monk or necromancer and even wizards can summon some seriose mojo into their blades.

OK, how about this; they release a patch changing 'Ranger' to 'Archer'? Are you saying their classes suck, or they don't know how to name their classes? Either way, you're probably looking for more customization.
