Guildwars 2 Beta Thread

* Generation 5: GW2. The break from WOW-like gaming is pretty substantial. There's a whole new way of questing. There's a whole new way of fighting, particularly in groups. There's a war again. "The grind" is not a barrier to tournament level PvP anymore. There's no monthly fee anymore, either.

Guild Wars 2 is the first real, new MMORPG we've had since WOW came out. STO, SWTOR, WAR, Rift, AOC, LOTRO, etc, were all "generation 4", being basically copies of WOW in a new setting.

Early access starts next Saturday. They might have some more stress tests or a final beta event but you won't be able to get in.

I didn't get into PvP much in GW1, so I doubt I will here either.

For those of you that played the betas, any advice to complete GW2 newbie? How many characters can you create on your account? Any advantages to races/professions? any "must have" items to go after first?

I was thinking about starting with a Warrior or Guardian and a Necromancer...

For the WvWvW Stormbluff seemed more organized for me, more communication and we seemed to win more often than not. I'm definitely going mesmer, their survivabilty is probably one of the best in the game

You get five character slots, then you can buy more with Gems (purchased with $ and/or gold). Racials don't seem as important as in some other games, so there's no best race for each profession.

Yah no racial traits. Which is nice and all so you don't feel like you are not getting certain things vs someone else. But i wish they did something with it, even if minor.

Yep, and usually won, mesmers have a lot of survivability, continually popping clones/phantasms, using shatter and kitting, staff clone will change your target and tp you backwards

/never played Guardian or Warrior, but did get ele/thief/ranger/necro to atleast 8 and mesmer had best survivability of those

consider an Asura mesmer if you're in to PvP. talk about confusing...

You see im still lost...
If i see a mesmer clone, i do a whirl and eat all his clones and the mesmer.
If he tries to run, i bullcharge.

I dont see how a mesmer has more survivability then a warrior.


The gaurdian is a tank... he has quite honestly 3 heals on him.
1. an aura
2. the aura changes to a heal
3. the heal.

As well as skills which boost his regen heal.

The necro can go in that ghost forum and leach life out of you.

in a 1v1 i have never been scared of mesmers.
Infact i love mesmer hunting because with the right group controls, you can really pinch the mesmer down.

This is why i rolled a warrior, i went up against too many leet warriors and got face roled by them with whirlwind, then rifle butt stun, then a HoB to oblivion.

Then when i went on a warrior i noticed it was a endurance match between Gaurdians and Necros.
More like i dont go 1v1 with them, becuase it takes WAYYYY too much time to kill them vs a ranger or mesmer if im solo hunting.

I'll roll on stormbluff if we are going to have an AT guild. I don't have the head start though, so I'll be a few days behind most.

I will be on the head start.
I will also probably hope to reach lvl30 by day 2 or 3 at the latest.
So it would probably be awesome if i can hit dungeons with guildies and not sit inside solo and get owned.

Guess I'll be rolling on Stormbluff as well. Can't seem to convince any of my friends to hop on the GW2 bandwagon though. Most are just starting to not play games anymore.

Getting ready for launch...I upgraded to a GTX670, ordered a mechanical keyboard, and overclocked my cpu finally. Bring it on already!

Ok...now with the question everyone hates: Is this game solo friendly?
Simply asking cause I won't have a regular play schedule and some weeks I won't even play 1 minute...so the moments I can play but don't have much time to onvest on the real thing, will I be able to enjoy, quest, have fun?

Yes. Even in group events there are usually alot others, and no teaming up etc needed. No more LFG to do stuff.

I don't see why they just don't have Races vs Races GW2. I see no reason they can't have each fight in WvW. It was doable in daoc 10 years ago, it could be now.

5 different races fighting each other seems more intresting than just fighting other servers of the same races as you..just saying.

This is against the lore, as the lore has all 5 races allying with one another to try and defeat a massive common foe in the dragons.

yeah, what Shintai said.

You will have no worries about being able to do content, as grouping is on the fly. No mob stealing, no waiting around for respawns or any of that crap (in fact--the respawn rate on mobs, as player population increases within zones, is quite brutal). You get rewarded for wanding something as you run by, and the person doing the real work also gets rewarded. Drops are player specific. no BS rolls for who gets what.

if the difficulty is anything like BW3, then there should be plenty of soloable content. If it's back to BW1, as people have said, though--then solo = dirt nap.
