I'm a Thief, lvl 29 atm. My go to weapon is the shortbow. It's just stupidly powerful. I played all of Sunday (seriously, way too much) and never once switched to my melee set. Throw down caltrops, kite the mobs into them and then just clusterbomb/poison cloud the shit out of them. Was farming spiders earlier for venom sacks. lvl 28 vs lv 30 spiders and as long as my caltops weren't on cooldown I could pull as many as were close enough. Got 5 at once a few times, lots of 4 sets, and anything less than that was a cake walk.

Melee set for me is dagger/pistol.. mostly for the Black Powder skill.

Ah nice i will have to try the caltops, i have been using mostly signets so far for the passive ablities on them.

I have used DW pistols probably 90% of the time, the number 3 ablity where it shotsl ike 7 times is pretty sweet and does a lot of dmg.

I will have to try short bow some also, i just like the pirate feel of duel pistols hah.

I enjoyed the games to their fullest...i got to max level, i did the raids, etc. it just got boring after awhile. i like mmos because you can play with other people. the people in my Rift guild were great. we had a ton of fun playing together, but you can only run the same 4 dungeons so many times before it gets old.

This, exactly this. I've had great fun with MMOs, and I do like that content, but like you, I don't want to grind too much of it. End game raids are fun and all, but once I've figured it out, I'm pretty much done. What it comes down to, is the guild and people you play with are what keeps me coming back.

Honestly, I do like the GW style of faction grinding (depends on the reward), and especially alts. The focus for GW tends to be character-class based, and how to play each one--not the roughly 2 builds (roles) for each class that tend to exist in all other MMO. Further, those traditional roles truly do not exist in GW2. it is bizarre yet refreshing.

GW1 was the game that turned me onto caster/ranged classes for the first time--so much so that my mains in GW2 are/will be casters. Only , with this release build, I am finding that my main class that I loved in Beta (Mesmer), has been nerfed a bit making my preferred weapon set much, much less useful.

What do I do? I switch to a mele-heavy with ranged option build and completely respec. Play style is now completely different than what I was expecting. it has taken me about a day to get used to this strategy, but it is now 200% more fun to play this class in a way that I never thought I would play it.

Honestly, no other MMO allows for that in my experience: Your class is either tank or DPS. that's it. Your class is either DPS or DPS, that's it. Your class is either Heals or DPS, that's it. Too bad if you didn't realize that going in. ....I hate that. :\

decided to try out GW2. downloading now. Got it from gamefly for 20% off

ok wtf? how am i supposed to confirm my email? it says to click the link but it's not clickable. SO i copy and paste it into FF and it says

Failure

The link you clicked is expired or invalid.

Sucked in!

post (or PM) your ID so we can invite you to the guild and welcome aboard! but post in the stickied guild thread, please

expect some login server crashes as this is a big day. That will cause problems with email confirmation (I actually got a prompt to update my email. yay! so I did that, and I had the same problem even though I had already been in and playing for a day....plus the betas). servers went down for an hour or two early saturday, which affected the GW2 website, ANet, and GW1 servers.

Be on soon. So while you are here. After 50size guild stash, i would think going for the 100 increase will cost too much time and influence.

What I suggest is immediately build the architecture function that allows us to build 2 at a time. (2 day build time) (which will be done approx. 8am sat then mass produce any and all karma/influence/xp increases throught the weekend.)

Then monday mid day return to leveling for bigger things.

I still can't decide on a class, I'm not really sure what I want.

I guess I really want to just do a shit-ton of damage.

To be fair that is the only option when removing the trinity. However, characters that put trait points in areas that give them more defense and self healing could take more of a beating.

But since mobs dont do traditional attacks like in other MMOs (Auto attack X character) you normally don't worry about it too much. Most of their attacks are aoes and/or dodgy stuff.

Overall I enjoy it. Makes it more action orientated. Traditional combat MMOs got to boring or easy. And annoying when you could see how easy it was to dodge something from a boss yet people fail at it.

And makes it more real.

Lets be honest. A tank character in Warcraft being beaten on by a 20ft tall monster 100+ times in combat, doesnt come out brain damaged? But here it kinda feels more like an action here that dodges attacks and makes attack rushes etc.

Oh I agree. I think I expected that as the true "cost" the more I played in the betas. In the end, the good (and fun) outweighs the bad imo. There are still things, depending on your build, that your class simply can not do as well as other classes, so it's not like everyone is kiting, jumping in and out, plinking. regardless, people will play "as" tanks to some degree (guildies have been claiming that they are great at tanking...then update that as, well, I'm awesome at kiting )

and you're right, the fact that the AI has been so damn good in the GW games makes the trinity model pretty stupid in the end. Rather than a pack of lizards standing around one single dude, pounding on him while continually being set on fire....apparently not caring that they are on fire, GW mobs flee in screaming terror and scatter in all directions until the fire runs out. You can't taunt them back b/c well....would you obey some demand to return and pound on someone if you were on fire?

No, no you wouldn't.

:hmm:

I hope you wouldn't.

yep, that arch upgrade is a no-brainer. I was strongly considering pushing that ahead of the bank.

And for that....I think we should spend some influence to get the warehouse going that much faster. or, otherwise, wait until an influence payment reduces a full day in build time? not sure if that will ever happen, but it seems to make the most sense. (6-10 hour time reductions just don't make sense to me; as diurnal beings, that is our sleep cycle. Whether it is truly logical, it seems a sort of bio-economic logic to me that the cost is too much for a time period of a day when no one is active, anyway :\)

warrior is your only option, then....but you've already disliked it?

did you try ele yet? they are incredibly fun, imo. massive damage, squishy like jello.

also...I found that you really need to get a good bit into the traits system to get a feel for the class. ...at least level 16 or 17.

hell, I was painfully progressing through my Mes, with the typical build, only to start enjoying it at 25 or so when I switched it up (would have been fine much earlier had I gone that route from the beginning).

Have you run through PvP training to test classes?

not sure what character to start out as.

Engineer, Mesmer, Necro, Elementalist and warrior all sound interesting. The others are interesting too but not as much.

What type do you normally like to play?

If melee go Warrior, i know my friend that is 70+ is a Engineer and loves it.

what'd you switch up on your mes?

I'm now going sword/pistol + staff

I bring feedback, the condition/boon removing phantasm, and I forget the other--usually the one that grants stealth to allies (I also like the other wall that when exploded as the chain function, will suck NPCs back towards the wall--that is great fun in keeping fleeing mobs pinned to AoE areas)

specced from (and I forget the actual trait names at the moment) vitality (this is illusion, right) /condition to dueling (10, with the +50 prec buff for sword at 10 traits) and vitality/condition.

The plan is to to put 10 traits into all of these in the first tier, then focus on dueling/conditions. I just picked up Avatar of Grenth as my elite when I hit 30 this morning (haven't had a chance to use it in mobs, but I'm mildly disappointed that you don't switch to an actual Grenth avatar as you did in GW1 :|). Still, awesome skill for a condition build.

I've become less interested in maintaining clones now--who knows, that may change as I get mroe traits to spend, so I'm not terribly interested in keeping them alive for too long--well, I focus more on phantasms now, which, alone, tends to keep them alive longer. i will probably spec into the trait that gives 3%+ damage for each clone out in the world.

I'm essentially ignoring the shatter skills. it remains my least-favorite F-skill system, despite how much I like the class.

I think Warrior, Ele, and Engineer are quite awesome in that department.

Without knowing how much you know about GW2, I would say Engineer is the least straightforward class to play. Any class is far from simple, but he is probably the furthest.

Also, the validation email is a known issue and I have it as well. Just ignore it for now.

from the guild's experience, leveling seems vastly superior on warrior--much easier to solo through content if you wish (you're rarely soloing anyway, there is almost always a mob of people about. But since there is no mob-stealing, no real competition in the xp/loot department )

and it is great damage, great survivability.

I don't know much about guardian, but it's more of an ultrasurvivor support/damage class. As I understand it, you have to stand around a lot and deal with some casting times, which is odd....because the casting classes can cast on their feet--which is awesome.

Nec is a rather viable tanky/caster. I only played for 9 or so levels. I enjoyed it, but it's nothing like the minion master (meat-shield spamming) or shutdown/DPS class from GW. the Oh shit! button is pretty sweet, though.

Thief requires a lot of skill to get it going from what I've heard. It might be difficult to play if lag is an issue at times, as it's very reaction/twitch-based combat. very squishy, too.

I find engineer and ele to be tons of fun. Unique use of the F skill slots. While ele can't swap weapons during combat, each weapon set has it's own 4 sets of elemental attunement. During battle, you can swap between these attunements--which really gives ele the most skills in the game. Ele can DPS, support, and heal pretty well. Probably the squishiest. I really like the dual-dagger skills. (btw, when you see caster using mele weapons, or mele classes using ranged weapons....don't assume that it means they have to fight at those ranges. the skills can be quite strange: ele dagger = flinging shards of ice or a lightning whip. stuff like that).

Another cool ele skillset--you can drop enchanted weapons of each attunement (fire, water, air, earth)--like an ice bow or fire axe, and either equip it or drop it for an ally to pick up. They pick it up, they get a new set of skills for this weapon, and it lasts a rather decent amount of time. I find this to be insanely cool and fun.

Engineer only gets 2 weapon sets the entire game: rifle or dual pistol. that's it. HOWEVER, the many utility skills that you unlock (the ones based on the skill points that you collect from leveling and completing challenges int eh world) often grant their own unique set of skills, when activated they replace your main set, and often are influenced by the tertiary skill set (the F keys). You can build turrets (like rifle, flame, heals, rocket, etc), a whole set of grenade skills (my favorite), equip a flamethrower with it's own full set of skills, mines that also have timing functions depending on how you activate them, etc, etc. The heals are also more diverse: not only do you have the self heal like every other class--you can toss your heal skill on the ground to grant the effects to allies. there are other kits that provide similar ally support, as well. so even though it has the fewest weapons, by far--it probably has the most diverse and total number of possible skills, and maybe play styles. it is very good damage, and great support.

that being said...it could be that my love of engineer was in playing an Asura--which is the best race if you ask me. Simply great content, one of the better starting areas--maybe the best--well-designed models (awesome animations), just an overall good attitude from the entire race. Asura = "fun"

Mesmer...my favorite. Hard to explain, though. Either you're popping clones to provide distraction or ally support, or some that provide amazing damage (iDuelist with secondary pistol), jumping in and out of large mobs and spamming massive condition spikes and jumping back, all the while stealthing your allies at the same time, it just offers a good balance between ranged an up-close mele. I must say though, that it is very hard starting out on this class. Not because it is difficult (it is pretty difficult), but you often find yourself wondering what the hell it is you are supposed to do as a mesmer. I really don't like the shatter function (the set of F skills for mes). It simply explodes all your clones on target, all at once, each of 4 choices offering a different type of condition on top of the damage. even through 30 levels, there is no way to trait any amount of serviceable damage with this function--simply spamming your main sword attack does about 5x the damage of shattering in less than half the time it takes for your clones to run in and explode--assuming they are alive,a s they tend to die as soon as they are spawned (either one shot, or being that they are targeted skills, the target may be dead before they spawn with the delay). On top of that, clones do no damage (you also have phantasms--a higher class of Illusions--clones and phantasms are all illusions--the phantasms, for the most part, are quite excellent). The phantasms do decent to great damage, and offer good support. I find myself building mostly around those, as I simply do not want to use shatter, and so clones, to me, are even more useless.

Ranger...haven't tried it. If you like pet classes, it is the pet class. You can get a pet shark. Seriously. for some people, that is probably all they need to hear

I don't really like pet classes, and was disappointed that you can't roll a ranger without a pet (as in GW1). They do very good damage, though I've heard mixed feelings about the type of skills they have.

I think Human and Asura have the best starting areas--best balance, most fun. Divinity (human capitol) is simply gorgeous. You'll find yourself exploring it for hours.

Charr is great to, but the starting area is very difficult. I think this is great, but it's seriously punishing when simply trying to figure out the initial weirdness of the game. Form the beginning, you have access to all starter zones if you want, by going into your capital, taking asura gate to LA, then finding each racial gate. This allows you to run around and grab many skill points early on, explore all over...jsut do whatever.

To me, Norn and Sylvari are intensely boring. I think the Norn area is rather gorgeous, actually...but the events and the repetitiveness of the area...I don't know. I didn't want to keep playing :\

Rangers are awesome DPS and are fairly good with survivability with the right pet. The Brown Bear is an AMAZING tank. The drake is weak as hell, but does good damage.

The skills, though, are moderate to aweful. There are three cool skills that the Ranger gets: a shortbow skill that causes you to shoot and jump backward, a longbow skill that knocks your target back, and the longbow skill that rains arrows. The rest are pretty crappy. In fact, when I'm out killing stuff, I mostly just use the shortbow with the regular attack. There are a couple of traps, but they do crap damage and have fairly low utility. There are some sigils but they're not great. A couple of elemental summons that add some support stuff, but again they're pretty crappy.

Overall, it's a pretty fun class, but the utility skills are incredibly underwhelming. There aren't any that make a difference in a fight.

Bought the game last night. And I'm not still sure what class to start out as.

As someone who enjoyed playing rogue in WoW (action/combo and damage dealer), I initially thought thief was the one I was going for. But I found out last night that thief in GW2 is very, very different from rogue in WoW.

I'll probably try warrior tonight. (minus stealth, warrior in GW2 looks more like rogue in WoW).

one thing is that there is so many people its difficult to see what the hell is going on. i'm like where am i? what I am doing? where is the enemy? etc...

I always play rogue/thief types. Long time WoW raiding rogue. Thief is fun just different. I would try out both warrior and thief to see what you like better. Switching weapon sets is pretty sweet, i love going from duel pistols to sword/dagger on the fly.

does ranger get to use guns or any kind of mele weapons? I wonder if there are a few racial skills that would make ranger more appealing for specific races?
