Trinity model is an outdated model that also forced people to group, rather than willing to group. Plus the trinity model could excuse some mobs with insane HP that you basicly had to heal you through.

Also anyone seriously missing the LFG, and only needing 1 of said trinity? Its hopelessly stupid.

Gw2 is luckily a real nextgen MMO that breaks up with all these old copy/paste standards.

Have you tried Rift LFG queue?

Anyone that says they have trouble entering a expert dungeon though the rift queue system obviously havent played it recently.

dont get me wrong tho...

I love GW2, i am going to play it early start and try to get as far as i can.
However there are times when you find yourself going ARGGGGH!!!

WTB HEALER!!!!

Other then passive regen, and 1 heal you can pop... unless ur a gaurdian or wizzard, your SOL and need to run and pray someone else pulls agro from you.
Also its very hard on melee, vs range.
They should implement a Weapon Parry on melee weapons, to mitigate the unfair advantage range has in survivability vs melee.

I like GW2, but i don't like it that everyone get be a healer myself. Seems MMO have been numbing down in that regard. Maybe they all can't be a healer, did not check to much into it, but mentalist healing is insane. It does high dps/heals self. Its easy to switch between the two as well.

Ok, so what server is everyone starting on? I haven't been keeping up with the thread and I don't want to search the last 20 pages to find it.

While I like the strategy based on role that you get with the trinity, it really does limit large groups of people--guilds especially.

For example--I like playing my tank in ToR. I hated it at first, mainly because I thought my sin would have a different role, but I sort of naturally progressed towards a tank build without realizing it...then you realize how in-demand tanks are in that game. Queueing for HM FPs is instant with a tank. With my DPS, ....forget about it. And the role of a tank is quite demanding--it involves patience and experience, but of course once maps and mobs are learned, no less grindy than any other role.

The problem with this, though, is that if I am not around, "raids" don't happen. Pugging a tank is a far different proposal than pugging a DPS, or even a healer when doing OPs. To me, that is a game-breaking model....by design. WIth so few people rolling that class, many, many people are limited with what and when they can play, because someone is simply not around to fill that role.

I like to help and I like to work with groups even though I get no useful gear out of runs, but it bothers me that in some ways, there exists some implied guilt if you aren't around to fill that spot, so no one else gets to go (not guilt from other players, just, you know--sucks that you guys can't do it because I'm not around, but....whatever?)

yeah, those are show off videos.

ask me about getting ruthlessly owned, several times, by a level 22 doe (I was level 20 at the time). Actually, it was two of here on AT. that god damn doe murdered both of us...3 times, I think?

This game is very, very hard. Do not be deceived.

thats just not possible... are u watching PVP videos?
Because for mobs, and area's you get mentored..
Basically even if ur lvl30, and u walk into queensdale, you'll notice your level drop to 15... and stays at 15, unless u go deeper into queensdale which then it drops to 11.

So in a sense... you can never faceroll though a section.
Theres always a chance for you to die if u get agro'd heavily on.

The problem with this, though, is that if I am not around, "raids" don't happen. Pugging a tank is a far different proposal than pugging a DPS, or even a healer when doing OPs. and i totally understand your point.
Having a noob tank = automatic fail... as well as having a noob healer.
And having a noob DPS always means long dungeon run.

However, the trinity system does put safenets on you.
Currently the classes minus the gaurdian and necro cant tank worth crap.
Even the warrior cant stay in the action too long unless he starts busting range.

To me it more feels like a game of TAG... you tag the boss... kite til your team mate heals.. and then TAG off again, and while u heal try not to pull agro.

something i;ve noticed in the last few MMOs I;ve played is lack of a class. Like no one wants to play a tank or a healer. Everyone just wants to be DPS. Someone needs to come out with a way to make all roles desirable.

I think PVP BS has a lot to do with it, imo. In PVP, people just want to kill other people. No one wants to be the healer sitting back and healing and not getting any kills. No one wants to be a tank who deals little damage and not getting any kills.

They either need to get rid of PVP altogether or make it so that all classes are viable in everything. Personally I would say get rid of PVP altogether because it adds nothing while causing tons of problems, imo

I agree with this, and was thinking of it in the same way, too. Honestly, I think a ton of people will not like that playstyle.

There is much more to it than that, but for several classes, you really are running the perimeter, tossing buffs or debuffs, plinking, or jumping in and out if your class allows it.

the videos that potifex are referring to are the first class demonstration videos that ANet released about a year ago, as they were unveiling each class. They are simply demonstrations--a player sitting in a fixed area, with a mob spawning right near them and following a fixed path to show the class's skills. it is not gameplay, but a fixed demo.

In reality, most any toon would be eaten by a mob of two, at the same level, if they sit there.

maybe not guardian, but I don't know guardian.

I think the real stress test will be the head starters that pre-ordered the game to start on Sat. I'm sure we're going to run into some fail at the early launch but crossing my fingers we don't.

I for one am glad they got rid of the holy trinity structure. If you count ALL the hours I waited to find either a tank or healer in all the other MMO's I ever played to complete a group, that's a shit ton of hours wasted. Now typically I played a tank in the games I played but later in the years I started getting older and lazy and just wanted to sit back and dps.

lol. I'm with you as I generally deplore PvP. But I think we are a very small minority.

ahaha u see thats all the gaurdian is good for.

He lays down signets which damage + heal + buff...
And he prays he can shake off whatever he gets hit by until the Warrior/Rouge can DPS to oblivion.
And as funny as it may sound... the warrior probably has the best AoE DPS with HoB.
Ive seen Gaurdians who pulled too much constantly run in a warrior's direction because they know thats the only class which can pull agro away from them long enough for there cooldowns to wear off.
And then the warrior runs to find the gaurdian who we can unload the mobs back onto.

Somewhere in the background u see a mesmer with a 2h sword zapping with long range.

This is why i got tired of the mesmer... i like to be inclose... yet all the good spells the mesmer has are intended for range.
And the clones really dont help until your like lvl30 and u can unlock your first branch.

well, most mesmer players prefer sword/pistol, which does have up-close utility (not I--i prefer wand/pistol).

great sword really isn't more than a gimmick for noob mesmers in PvE. it's main use is the knockback for PvP.

and in BW1--Chaos storm was the instant win AoE damage for the game; but the class went through several nerfing events since then.

clones aren't much use anyway, but the phantasms are quite useful (i actually call them all clones. distinguishing them is just to confusing for me). With the BW1 game, you could really get rolling with the class around level 15 and 17, with your dual phantasm spell, and constant-spam clone with the scepter main attack. That has mostly changed, now that the skills are tiered and it takes much longer to unlock those phantasms, and clones are even less useful at the moment. The devs say that they have been tweeking and tweaking the weapons and spell functionality since BW3, so we shall see.

Not a fan of the 2 hand sword, i was running staff/scepter/pistol and i thought it was pretty good, once you start swapping weapons and only dropping the phantasms it becomes much better

staff and scepter/pistol are pretty awesome. hoping they put the punishment back into confusion (the 2nd skill for scepter, which used to be quite good). Besides its relative lack of use, imo, mes greatsword was outright annoying with that damn sound effect. I got so sick of hearing the wiiir! wiiiir! wiiiiiir! whenever some newly-created mes runs up to join the mob with their predictable greatsword. Actually....I think they removed that, or changed it for BW3, didn't they?

the key to making mesmer useful is understanding that you aren't just plinking and debuffing targets, with a weapon like the staff. You need to be targeting through allies, as your first skill will instant buff any ally that it hits on its way to your target. spam spam spam.

That, and chaos storm doesn't simply melt mobs, it buffs your allies to no end. through the first 2 beta events, I found it quite useful for preventing wipes.

Hopefully, clones can have a bit more meat to them, so they aren't simply fodder for insta-explosion. That play style isn't very fun to me. :\

ahaha... u guys are making me have flashbacks on the mesmer...
LOL...

Chaos storm was awesome.. i loved it..
What i didnt love was how the staff's missle couldnt go up cliffs!!! or had to ride up cliffs!

LOL...

As i said im a inclose fighter... but not a total glass cannon like the ranger and sin.
I like to start my combos off as a warrior with whirlwind... then weapon swap to rifle.. give them a rifle butt... charge... HoB, and if there still alive... use more sword skills, and if they run swap back to rifle after HoB and rapidfire the target to oblivion.

One of my favorate farming spots was the mines u get to at like lvl18.
I would just sit there... wait for the centurs to invade that mine, and just clear them out with AOE's like whirlwind and HoB at the stairs checkpoint.

Centaurs i think by far give the best loot...
Whats funnier is most of my crafting was supplemented by drops and salvaging more so then mining and foraging.

I'll probably go Weapons and Armor on my first avatar, as they share the same raw materials.

I don't play with sound on so i have no idea if it still makes that sound, i just found the phantasm wasn't that great, preferred the staff because of skills 2,4 and 5 , pistol phantasm does decent dmg and the cc on 5 is nice, i do carry a torch as well as the invis is nice to have and the phantasm is decent

yeah i just discovered the invis skill on torch last stress test when i found a decent one. didn't really think too much of the phantasm though.

mostly i just face roll with staff. chaos storm + radiation field + staff orbs bouncing around = awesome

i do really wish there was a perma stealth class. i loved inf in DAOC. being able to scout in RvR and climb walls was amazing. still probably going to go mes first... but might play around with a thief on the side. reading through all the shadow step type abilities makes me want to pvp with one really bad.

the wall climbing in daoc was a really cool idea, i'm not in favor of perma stealth but i do think it should be longer than it currently is for the thief, it maxes at 10 seconds?
