still trying to find a stout/porter that tastes better than Guiness.

latest try was Killian's Irish stout.
I liked Killian's Red and hoped their stout was at least on par w/Guiness.

Nope

LOL @ comparing a Coors' product to Guiness.

You're going to want to look at microbrews.

Just to name a very few...

-Founder's Breakfast Stout
-Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald (Porter, but delicious)
-Left Hand Milk Stout (If you get this out of a nitro tap at a bar, it's probably the most directly comparable thing on this list to a Guinness. Really excellent.)
-Samuel Smith (Imperial Stout, Oatmeal Stout, Tawny Porter)
-Young's Double Chocolate Stout

Good list! Murphy's and Beamish are two other options very similar to Guinness too.

But Smithwicks is better than Killian's Red (imho). Smithwicks is owned by Guiness.

Black Butte Porter -

Yum!

We used to buy racks of Killians in 1994 when I was in the Army because that was basically a micro-brew back then. Paid about $18 for a case. It was for times when you just couldn't drink any more Busch Light and it was pay-day so your pockets were full.

If you are into porters, check out Coal Porter by Atlantic Brewing Co. I had it in Maine this past spring, but I was also able to find it back in MD as well.

I have Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter on tap in my kitchen, pretty fond of it. I wouldn't necessarily say it's "better" than Guinness, but it was a pretty good choice for a winter beer. Can't pound them back like a Guinness, for sure though; 9.2% alcohol.

Founders Breakfast Stout
Rogue Double Chocolate Stout
Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout
Founders Porter

All very good and tasty alternatives to Guinness

So many different breweries now, so it's not hard to find something that might be mase even closer to home you end up liking better.

^^ This - Rogue Shakespeare Stout is frigging awesome, so is the Double Chocolate Stout.

If you want something stronger along the same lines, I highly recommend the Victory "Storm King" imperial stout, it's awesome, as is the Brooklyn Brewery "Double Chocolate Stout".

For more bitterness, the Old Rasputin is usually recommended, but it's extremely bitter IMHO.

You sir, have fantastic tastes in beer.

I haven't had a bad beer from Founders. Had their Centennial IPA yesterday on tap. I'm not a huge IPA fan but that was a great warmer weather beer.

Another excellent stout is Boulevards Dark Truth stout if you want a more "imperial style" stout.

For a more sessionable stout, Barney Flat Oatmeal Stout is one of the smoothest, most mellow stouts I've had.

Agree with a lot of the people posting here, Founder's makes some awesome stouts, if you can find their Kentucky Breakfast stout buy it, it's really good but extremely hard to get (it's already gone from this year).

Bell's has some good stouts as well, kalamazoo stout is good as well as their pricier ones like expedition or java stout. I also like the poet from new holland, it's a good oatmeal stout. Hoppin' frog makes a lot of good stouts but they're pretty pricey (worth it once in a while imo). The best stouts I've had are really hard to find but worth it, Parabola from Firestone Walker and Bourbon County Stout from Goose Island are amazing, both are barrel aged imperial stouts and are really smooth with a ton of flavor.

Some great suggestions here, especially the Left Hand Milk Stout.

Wolaver's Oatmeal Stout is another of my dependable favorites. It may only be available in the north east, though.

A few years ago Left Hand had a winter seasonal pack that had a special run of a "Pepper Porter" in it. When you read the description it sounded terrible. But in actual taste it was very unique. Take their milk stout, but replace that subtle sweetness with a subtle warming spiceyness. Was quite delicious on a fridgid winter evening.

I had a Murphy's yesterday. My brother aptly described it as "Guinness from a different part of Ireland".
