its just a good tasting, dark beer. something you dont see too much of here. dont drink it from the can or bottle. if its not on draught, its not the same, and not worth it.

It can be pretty horrible from the tap, too, depending on the bar. The first Guinness I had when I came back to the states (after a london and dublin trip) tasted like turpentine.

Fortunately, there were better bars.

thats true. it has to be slow poured, with a proper head. if it doesnt take a while to get it, they didnt pour it right.

So true. Have to try a few places because some places serve it either cold or flat. Cold because they are stupid and flat because they've left it on tap too long. Should be warm and just tapped. Then you can't go wrong.

I was at a bar and they poured it out of a bottle that had been sitting in a trough of ice. It tasted like crap until it warmed up some.

Quick question: Guinness in a bottle (with the widget) tastes much better when chilled (IMO), and they even recommend you keep it well chilled, what makes that different from a normal cup of draught which is said to be better warm?

If I remember right, bottled Guiness has live yeast still in it, canned doesn't. Isn't the widget a plastic thing in a can that is supposed to make canned beer pour and taste like draft beer, but doesn't.

The can with the little CO2 cartridge in it is fine as long as it is properly chilled and poured properly.

Guiness is the bread of the gods. If you don't like it, go back to your Bud Ice and wine coolers :disgust:

Regular Guinness tastes watery to me, the Extra Stout is pretty darn good though. It is the perfect example that dark colored beers are not necessarily "heavy." If you can't drink regular Guinness than you can't drink pretty much any good microbrew.

FYI, Guinness has as much alcohol as a Bud Light. Another myth busted

Actually, Guiness from the bottles tastes great. I dont know what shimsham is talking about... it's gotta be from the bottles with the off-white necks though. TORPEDO WIDGET!

As with most things Guinness is an acquired taste. I spitted it out the first I tried it. Good thing I was sitting in a dark bar....

Yet Another Guinness Elitist Thread :frown:

I enjoy Guinness but it is on this silly plateau in the world of beerdom. It is cool to drink Guinness and so it becomes a status symbol rather than a refreshing beverage.

two words for you: Acquire Taste

or in layman terms: I like it so fukk off

anyway, the bottle one does taste a lot better when chilled (heck, this is true with all beer right? but if Guiness is not cold enough it would taste really really bitter and much like medicine. )

Guinness is enjoyable in any state, though the swill they put in bottles makes me wonder what they think sometimes.. If you absolutely HAVE to drink from a bottle (ie, you haven't progressed enough from infancy to be trusted with a glass), stick to Guinness Extra Stout, not the wing-tipped garbage in the black bottles. Guinness should ne'er be drinken from the can; instead, pour it as a draught, into a room temperature mug, let sit about 2 minutes until the head has coalesced, and enjoy.

Of course, I enjoy an ice-cold Guinness every now and then, particularly in the middle of the summer. Nothing quite like finishing 2 pints in 10 minutes...

Slainte..
