i don't see how you people listen to satriani, malmsteen, and petrucci. i agree that it is technically amazing, but it lacks musicality imho. i would sell the gibson and add the money you would of spent on ltd or jackson and buy a better gibson. but whatever floats your boat. but if you're set on buying something, go and play it rather than taking the word of ATOTers.

satriani and petrucci are very musical imho.. malmsteen is just classical shred to me. listen to satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream... its so very melodic and sweet, i could listen to it over and over and over...

i haven't listened to any of dreamtheater's new stuff, but what i have heard seems like petrucci is just playing scales and fingertapping as fast as he can. but to each his own i guess.

Some of the best music ever written is basic scales over chord progressions. Petrucci just goes alot faster

Aye, Petrucci be fast, but teh melodocity(sp?) jumps off teh plank....wankery is the word for it out on the seas.

petrucci can be very melodic, it just depends on the context of the song and what he has to work with. check out hell's kitchen on Falling Into Infinity

also, there is an art to playing scales over chords, like how you lay them across the changes and stuff... for instance, you might be running through a scale, but if you hit the major7th of a chord when the person playing the chord only hits the major chord, together, you get the effect of a major7th chord. Petrucci is amazing in how he threads his scales through chords.. it really does take a lot of discipline and brain power for sure.

I read quickly thru the thread, so I apologize if this has been covered.

GET A NEW AMP! (a real one) Not a effin Line 6 either. The LP will shred thru a REAL amp.

Ugh...echo overload. You normally only want to use that much delay if you're playing rockabily or psychodelic. Try cutting down on the delay pedal and filling in some reverb. It'll sound a lot tighter.

i agree. i consider it my fun patch to practice scales and to play around with - nothing serious by any means. i was just playing around when i recorded it. i could barely hear the backing track due to being sleepy and fairly lit much less care about my guitar sound. for the most part i normally play clean with little to no effects - i got into the habit of it over years and trying to break myself from it.

i like my line 6 spyder.

They are good for certain situations, but NOTHING beats a soaked set of output tubes - especially with a nice Paul, in the hands of someone who can play.

That's the key. SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Gilmore, etc. all sound like themselves almost regardless of what they play through. So my Line 6 is good enough, because I'm not that good.

Have you ever played thru a good tube amp? It becomes PART of the instrument. You WILL sound better (as long as your atleast mediocre). I can tell you this too, every single one of those guys you listed spent a LOT of time tweaking their DISCRETE all TUBE amps to get the sound that makes them sound like they do (although, you are right, they contribute the biggest part to the sound by far)

I love the no-master volume Marshalls and Fenders - TONE for DAYS!!!

He is very good! I am impressed.

The more I play, the more I realize that it's between me and the amp, and not the guitar.
