Yep. But Steve Lukather (AKA Luke) gets some of the best sound I've heard, out of EMG's on his Ernie Ball MMs.Originally posted by: TechBoyJK
i think dimarzio's are what is in Petrucci's Ernie Ball MM

Well since you haven't stated a price range, I will go ahead and say ESP Viper 400. $599 comes stock with EMG's, an 81 in the bridge and an 85 in the neck. The guitar just feels so awesome. I had a Jackson dxmg Dinky for a while, but this ESP blows it away. Plus the jackson had the EMG HZ's. Anyways, I personally swapped the pickups on my Viper 400 and put DiMarzio's, a PAF Joe in the bridge and a Humbucker from hell in the neck. Sounded so much better than the EMG's, and they were perfect for any style of music, even metal. Metal sounded so much better on the DiMarzio's.
EDIT: i recently got a 2001 PRS santana se, the one that looks 10x better than the new ugly santana se's. considering this PRS was a 700-800 guitar at its time, I honestly prefer my ESP over it.

So you recommend the Viper, but then go on to say that the DiMarzio's sound so much better?

Many guitar brands have cheapo, value, mainstream, premium, and custom models. So saying xxxx company makes crap guitars is short-sighted. I'd say decide if you are a whammy guy or not, and make your decision on that. And prepare to spend at least $1000 on a quality guitar, regardless of the brand.
Only exception I'd make it with a strat or telecaster. They suck for the metal sound, no matter how quality/expensive they are.

Here's a clip of my Telecaster.
Heavy Metal is all in the effects.

No offense, but that sounds like ass to me. Not like any metal bands I listen to. If you like it that's great, but I wouldn't say it sounds like a good metal sound to me. More like grunge/Smashing Pumpkins or something.

i don't see how you people listen to satriani, malmsteen, and petrucci. i agree that it is technically amazing, but it lacks musicality imho. i would sell the gibson and add the money you would of spent on ltd or jackson and buy a better gibson. but whatever floats your boat. but if you're set on buying something, go and play it rather than taking the word of ATOTers.
satriani and petrucci are very musical imho.. malmsteen is just classical shred to me. listen to satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream... its so very melodic and sweet, i could listen to it over and over and over...

i haven't listened to any of dreamtheater's new stuff, but what i have heard seems like petrucci is just playing scales and fingertapping as fast as he can. but to each his own i guess.

Some of the best music ever written is basic scales over chord progressions. Petrucci just goes alot faster
