I'm just starting to play the guitar (a bit under 3 months or something) and I mastered ~70% of Nirvana in ~3 weeks. So I thought, let's try something else. So I tried 'Hear Ma Train A Comin'', by Jimi Hendrix. Oops. It's too hard .

But now I found an easier song. Angel. Here's the tab:

ANGEL, JIMI HENDRIX

Lyrics:

F# C#6 G#m
Angel came down from heaven yesterday

B E
Stayed with me just long enough to rescue me....

F# C#6 G#m
And she told me a story yesterday

B E
About the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea

B D F#
The she spread her wings high over me....she said

G#m A#m
I'll come back again to see you tomorrow

B Bsus
And I said

Chorus:

E F#m7/E
Fly on my sweet angel

C A D D# E
Fly on through the sky

E F#m7/E
Fly on my sweet angel

C A D D# E
Tomorrow I'm 'gonna be by your side

Sure enough to this woman came home to me
Silver wings silhouetted against a child's sunrise
And my angel she said unto me
today is the day for you to rise
Take my hand come you're gonna be my man
and she took me high over yonder
(Chorus)

Unfortunately, FuseTalk fscks up the tab, so you can take a look at this, it's the top one.

Okay, so here's the questions:

---0---
---7---
---4---
---6---
---6---
---0---

HOW THE FSCK DO I PLAY THIS? Please take note that I play in a similair way to the master himself. I play the guitar lefthanded but set for a righthanded person. IE, e is on top and E is on the bottom.

Also, how the hell would one play this:

---4---
-------
---4---
-------
-------
-------

So, I'm supposed to play my e and my G without touching my B? All in one stroke?

Please help, I want to learn this song and play it on my school's talent show, February next year. Sorry for the long post, but most of it is junk anyway .

Thanks in advance .

I don't really know what you mean . You mean copying the G onto the B, right? That could work, maybe . I'll try it. Thanks.

Yeah, that works, but we have the same deal with this one:

---4---
-------
---6---
-------

And I can't copy that over .

You have to mute the B with one of your fingers. Say you're fingering that with your ring finger on the 4 and index finger on the 6. Your index finger would have to fold down and touch the B. You could also overextend your ring finger on the 4 until the tip is touching the B.

Hmm, I'll try it .

EDIT: Doesn't seem to work.. I can still hear the B...

for the first one, i'd have to pull out my guitar. you might have to fudge it a bit, but if someone tabbed it either it's wrong or it's possible.

for the second, just use the finger holding down the G string to mute the B.

edit: woop for too much thinking. so yeah, like kogase said.

Another choice is to simply touch the B with one of your free fingers, in that scenario the only convenient one would be your middle. I find that somewhat cumbersome, however...

Or you could learn how to pick. I was classically trained. I didnt' use a pick for the first 4 years of my guitar playing. Now I hold a pick with my index and thumb and rake and pick with my remaining fingers as needed.

I find it easy to mute the B string in that last chord you mentioned with my middle finger while it's on the 4th fret of high E then stack your index finger to get the other note on the G string. (the 4 and 4). For the 4 6 one, switch your fingers around, same concept.

Edit, by mute, I mean when you're pressing the string down on the E, put the finger a little bit higher than normal so when it's pressed down the tip of your finger is touching the string above it just enough for it not to sound when you pick

That provides an entirely different sound than strumming with a pick though, and for hard rock with heavy distortion (like Hendrix) picking is the way to go.

I've never had a problem playing hendrix. Grow some nails.

It sounds like the OP problem is 2 fold. First, he needs a left handed guitar strung properly. Playing upside down is going to make it very hard to communicate to another guitar player without using sheet music. It is also going to make it hard to learn the basic chord and scale shapes. I know its 'cool', but its not practical. Second, he needs to practice his positions and scales more as he is having trouble with basic positions and chords.

I would add a third but most people disagree with me. That would be you should learn how to read music and stop relying on tabs to learn songs. However reading music seems to be a big no no to most rock guitar players. Yes, I did learn songs from tabs in the very begining. But I was also coached on sheet music from the very begining. My freinds who learned only to play from tab could never make the switch to sheet music. I had no problems.

Buy a left-hand guitar.

BTW while Hendrix played a right-handed guitar left-handed, he re-strung it, so the low E string was on top like it normally is.

What does that have to do with what I'm saying? Are you not playing a left handed guitar? Is the string closest to the ground not high E but rather low E (the fattest one)? If so you're making things overly hard on yourself.

And FYI, hendrix restrung his guitar to be opposite, you're making stuff way too complex for yourself.

Where you see 4

4

This means that you hit the 3rd string with your pick and the 1st string with your 4th finger.

Jimi Hendrix probably isn't the best guy to start with if you're just learning, as he was very free form and didn't follow many rules. If you really want to learn this song, play along with the CD as Hendrix was more "feel" than "structure". You'll need to get the rhythm down and then the chords will make sense.

Well, I have no problem playing chords, and I can't play a lefthanded guitar properly. Tried it for 2 weeks, but I just couldn't adjust. Meh.

Meh, it's really easy. It's basically two or three standard 'finger shapes' as I like to call them . I could make a list of songs I can do, but I can't be bothered, really .

Oh, I guess I was wrong, then. Anyways, I find almost any chord to be a lot easier. I mean, the basic E-major formed barré-chord was super easy to play, whilst I know someone who's been playing about 8 months longer than me couldnt do it .

I was trying to play Jumping Jack Flash the other day, but I couldn't quite master the A, so that might be true ..

What? Dude, you finger pick that. It's a standard guitar shape.

No I don't. I do exactly what I suggested he do. When I'm playing rock. Of course, if I ever pick up a guitar nowadays it's my classical, and I don't even touch a pick. But if I play my electric with some Hendrix I mute strings to strum stuff like that.
