No, putting a capo on would be the equivalent of tuning UP, not down.

Nope .. shouldn't take more than a minute or two to tune your guitar.

Easist way would be to have multiple guitars, each one designated for a different tune.

If you tune the whole guitar down 1/2 step, When you put the capo at the first fret, you are now tuned "normal. This is "easy" way to have both tunings available, but it may sound funny depending on how exactly your guitar is intonated.

You could also transpose the song down 1/2 step. In other words if the song your playing is G-D-A-D tuned down 1/2, play F#-C#-G#-C# with normal tuning. It will be technically correct and sound ok, but won't sound exactly as intended.

i keep one guitar tuned down 1/2 step, with a capo on 1st for "regular" tuning, and one other guitar with regular tuning, this works well for me.

Assuming your guitar is in standard tuning, tune the 6th fret of your low E string to your open A string. Continue tuning on down the strings (6th fret to open one below), except for the G string... tune the G string at the 5th fret to the B string open.

P.S. An electronic guitar tuner is pretty cheap

I don't tune down 1/2 step unless I'm playing live (I think it's done so you can play the song slower and the singer doesn't have to keep up so high).

Get a pedal tuner and you can tune down in about 60 seconds. My Boss tuner has a setting that lets me do this quickly.

Not too many people can do that, and your voice gets really tired really quick on fast songs.
