I saw the other thread and I got to thinkin'... I could really use a new electric guitar, but there's one big thing I'm wondering...

Does your electric have a trem/vibrato/whammy bar?

I'm shopping around, and I'm wondering if I should specifically look into guitars that have good trems. I've actually never played a trem for any legnth of time, so I don't know how useful they are. I'm mainly playing Rock, and I might move into a little blues, jazz, or metal, but yea, it's mainly rock (I play classical on another craptastic guitar, but that's a whole different story... GAH, I can't get a good one out of that thing!)

Just thought I'd ask you all to share your experiences with your trems, or offer me any recommendations, in my hunt for a new electric.

No I don't, and I hear they're a royal pain for keeping your guitar in tune. Apparently the floyd rose ones are to be avoided.

Yeah my bro's Ibanez that I frequently use has one.

I have almost absolutely no use at all for it. Makes it harder to change strings, keep in tune and whatnot. Its some TRS Tremolo bridge but I dont even bother with the bar. So its not horrible or anything just I dont see it having an advantage so I'm gonna make sure the guitar I buy doesnt have one.

i have them on my stratocasters, but i have them pulled down tight against the body and blocked up with pieces of wood. they are a huge pain in the butt for tuning and are definetely to be avoided if you play aggressively, like you always pick really hard, or you jump around while you play.

the floyd rose units are the BEST units for actually doing tremelo work. they have a very easy action, and return to tune nearly perfectly every time you let go of the bar. but getting them in tune in the first place is VERY difficult, and changing strings can be a pain because of the tuning issues. god help you if you change string gauges. it will take you hours and hours to get the spring tension correct on the unit and get everything tuned up and level again. every time you change one string, all the others will go out of tune. heavier strings will pull the unit up too far, so if you pull it back down, all the strings go sharp... fix the tuning and now the unit is sitting too low... repeat ad nauseum. i had one and just ended up blocking it up with wood like the strats.

I keep my Strat tremelo properly adjusted. I don't use it often, but it stays in tune just fine when I use it. The spring vibration gives it a brighter sound too.

Didn't have to adjust it last time I changed strings. If you bend it like crazy when you first get it, to stretch out the springs really good, it will stay in tune much better.

Temolo bars are a bit out of style these days. They have effects that can simulate them if needed though. Never used them much myself. Plus, with the pedal, you don't have to worry about getting knocked out of tune

Interesting. What pedal would simulate such an effect?

Take your pick

I have a Digitech RP300 that has the effect on it too.

Some of those pedals cost more than my current guitar and amp combined. Damn. I forgot how steep those things were.

Is that a good place to shop for this stuff?

Edit: NM, it's not even a vendor.

Musiciansfriend and Music123 are actually my favorites. I just pulled the first site on Google to show you what's out there.

You can probably get a multieffects box for about the same price with a tremolo effect on it.

What do you think?

Some people really like line 6 products. They're pretty versatile since they usually have tons of effects and tones.

What type of music do you like playing?

You can find good used stuff on ebay if you look carefully.

Edit:
As far as that amp goes, it's gonna be very loud. Are you gigging with a band or performing with other people?

If not look for a 1x12 combot not a 2x12.

Even a good 1x12 combo can be perfectly fine to gig with.

If you're into classic rock or just rock period you could look into an older tube Marshall.

Definitely try out different amps though at your local guitar store. You don't have to buy from there but bring your guitar in and just plug in and play. Don't be afraid to play even if you suck, it's your money your spending.

Line6 makes great products. They tend to be a bit pricey as compared to the competition though. It's a good amp choice- you'd be really happy with it.
