Ok.. this guy and his friends have done some pretty impressive cover work of the band Dream Theater. Love them or hate them, they're total masters of their instruments and their talent is pretty unmatched, less a few select individuals.

This is one of John Petrucci's more abstract solos because of the chord changes he plays over. It's been discussed multiple times in columns in guitar world, and I remember trying to play this ten years ago when I wasnt all that good. This guy pretty much nails this guitar solo, even all the little nuances in the bends, etc.

Betcha can't play this! I wonder if there is anybody on this forum that could play it honestly.

seriously.. pay attention to the jacked up chord changes in the background.. he chases those changes around amazingly. most people just charge through.

I play guitar, but not lead, and not jazz rhythm or anything; more like singer-songwriter folksy stuff. Every time I see an accomplished lead guitarist I am amazed at how little work they actually seem to be doing to the get the sounds they produce, especially the plucking hand. When I try something even half that time I swipe too many strings (not to mention my hands are out of time with one another). Is he muting and/or just hitting only the 1 string needed for that moment for those fast passages (right hand)?

And that guy was/is really good and smooth.

Makes me glad I'm a bass player, even if I'm playing guitar in a band right now. I have zero interest in playing like that. My other guitar player, on the other hand, would have no trouble with anything Petrucci has ever done. He is an absolute genius on the guitar, but instead of doing something with his talent, he married a crazy ass bitch.

Yep, once you play for a while, you realize that most guitar playing beyond simple strumming is heavily reliant on the right hand. By my estimation, you need an order of magnitude *more* precision and proprioception at the picking hand than the fretting hand, not to mention rhythmic ability.

Sucks that I'm lefthanded playing righty, if I could do it over and start out playing lefty, I would. Basic fretting stuff (strength, flexibility/reach) is relatively easy to develop in either hand, while picking/plucking is using hardcore proprioceptive and sensory stuff that's hardwired into your brain and *not* easily developed in a non-dominant hand.

There are some absolutely sick Youtube players btw.

I play left handed. My first guitar from like 14 years ago I strung upside down. It sucks because I pretty much have to custom order every guitar that I buy but it's worth it.

Don't get me wrong, that is pretty good playing....but it's not THAT hard. I can't play like that yet, but it doesn't look as hard as many things I've seen.

I wouldn't say it's the hardest looking solo, but there's alot of detail in it. Another thing that makes it so great is how it is written. There is some pretty abstract, chromatic chord changes going on behind the solo which makes playing on it very hard. Whether the solo is played on piano, sax, guitar, or violin, the note progression in and of itself is pretty complex. It's not something that could be improvised. Guitar World had a huge article on it.

The thing about bands like DT is they are pretty much playing for other guitar players. Almost all of the DT fans I know play guitar.

Now this is what I jerk off to every night:

Hell yeah. Just learned most of the lead for that song. Now on to the last solo. This guy has a great lesson on the entire song:

Just keep at it. After two years, you've barely even got your feet wet. Find some people to jam with, that will help you more than anything. An hour of playing with people is better than ten hours of sitting in your bedroom, and an hour of playing in front of people is better than eight hours of practicing in the garage. It's a hell of a lot more fun too.

So my 1000 hours of playing to my wall equals 100 hours of jamming which equals 12.5 hours of live gigs. I totally believe it because I haven't progressed since I was about 16, even though I've played the equivalent of about 20 live shows . But I still very much enjoy the whole experience of writing and recording, regardless of how little I've progressed with regards to my playing level.

Tangent: following that first Youtube link I eventually tunneled through to watching the 1991 Monsters of Rock in Moscow Pantera videos. That is some amazing stuff just based off of pure stage energy.

technically impressive. however Dream Theater isn't really enjoyable to listen to. I don't understand people's obsession with speed and technical skills, I'll take a guitarist who plays with emotion and comes up with awesome riffs over a speed demon guy.
