Way back in the late 90's Guitar World magazine had a break down of this guitar solo. It's basically a weird chromatic chord progression using some elements of serialism. This just makes it more difficult to write a fluid melody. I remember seeing the tab and thinking 'yea, screw that'. Lots of weird string skipping and sweeping, difficult position changes, etc.

Anyways, this solo is stupid difficult and this guy nails it. The ending is the best part. Try and follow what he does.

You would win the bet.

There are a few parts that don't seem quite so crazy at first glance. But, yeah, I can't even follow a lot of it.

i love that solo but i honestly can't tell if the guy is actually playing it or just moving his fingers in time with the backing track. the mix is not done well enough to tell.

my favorite soloist at the moment (and for a long time) is andy larocque, he can shred with the best of them but his solos are much more melodic and unique than most any other guitarist i can think of. he doesn't get enough credit though.

lol at technical vs selling out ampitheaters.

Just kidding, Dream Theater is a very technical band. Much like Rush was.

Blech, yea I'm sure the guitar work is great but 10 seconds in I hear the "machine gun" computer drums, I'm out. If I decide to get into meth I'll pick up one of their CD's,,

if you don't like that then you probably don't like metal, meaning you probably wouldn't like the OP's video either. the drums don't sound much different on the entire awake album.

king diamond is the king, no matter what anyone says.

Denner doesn't get enough credit. His closing solo on Black Horsemen is not only my favorite King Diamond solo but easily one of my favorites ever.

This kind of stuff used to impress me when Yngwie Malmsteen first came out. But more and more people seem to be able to play like that now. Now it just sounds like a bunch of shit to me and these guys never seem to be able to write a song or work well with other artists. They want their guitar work to be stage centre.

Here's a real guitar player.

Thank you for reminding me that past a certain point, the more technically proficient your playing becomes, the more mind numbingly boring it becomes.

Seriously. I hate this kind of wankery. I don't care to ever play like that. There are three rules of musicianship that this breaks:

1. Don't play too many notes.
2. Play only what the song needs and GTFO.
3. Don't be a wanker.

To echo other people in this thread, I am much more impressed with good songwriting (I dont care if its 4 basic chords as long as its good) and someone who can play with other musicians.

I'm not a fan of Dream Theater at all beyond Awake and can agree that in general they can get pretty masturbative, but that solo isn't an example of that imo.

Sounds just like the Joe Satriani format - take a simple 4:4 time signature, simple chord arrangement, and solo over it for 3 minutes. Good solos, but nothing ground breaking, the DT solo is more interesting.

1. By whose definition? Yours?
2. Maybe the song needs a lot of notes
3. There's actually very little "wanking" going on in the OP's solo

People who *automatically* dismiss this type of music tend to take on an air of superiority, as though they have graduated to a higher plane of musical interest, when in reality they are more ignorant of music than they understand themselves to be. They simply cannot recognize the musicality in this, and cannot differentiate between the good stuff and the "wankers." What makes BB King and David Gilmour better than the guy at the local pub? It's the same thing that makes Petrucci, Malmsteen, and Vai better than the thousands of knock-off shred guitarists on youtube.

I like to listen to everything, from extreme shred/goth/death/noise metal all the way to Irish folk songs to Tupac Shakur. One of my favorite artists is Ol' Dirty Bastard who was known for being one of the most minimalist rappers you can imagine. Extremely raw and to the point. The early Beatles are incredible for their pop song writing ability. Early punk bands like Crass, GBH, and Exploited are incredible for their raw, cheap, dirty songs. I'm happy to be able to enjoy more music rather than less. But all of these musical styles can be exploited or abused or misapplied or simply copied too much. Same goes for "shredding."

I like the blues as much as the next guy, but jesus fucking christ, there are only so many combinations of the I-IV-V minor pentatonic scale that you can make!

Funny you should mention BB King - though I think he oversimplified his playing style, his philosophy was not to play too many notes.

I knew my post would be a little inflammatory when I made it. I too listen to and have listened to a wide variety of music, being a near obsessive fan (My CD, cassette and album collections occupy major parts of 3 rooms in my house in floor to ceiling shelves - I cant tell you how many I have, I am too lazy to count them all. It's a lot.)

I just see far too many guitarists/musicians who believe that overplaying is awesome. Music, ultimately, is about maximizing timing to evoke an intended (emotional) response - whether its fast or slow or whatever. Too many players just try to cram in as many notes/techniques as they can to demonstrate their technical ability (which I'll admit I'll never be able to do - I don't practice nearly enough), but it is generally a very boring sound, and most definitely becomes a masturbatory exercise rather quickly.

That guy could play circles around me.. no doubt though. I'll just stick to simple chord progressions and easy riffs from my favorite tunes.

You are spot on. Technical skill != Better music.

My God. When did people telling other people what good music wasn't, turn into the cool thing to do?

Definitely not for beginners, but my cuz can play that without an issue. Of course he's 33 and been playing since 8. He was playing all AC/DC, Poison, GNR, Metallic, Clapton, Jimmy, SRV, etc.. etc.. when we was in junior high..

Sadly he seems to fail at everything else in life...
