Gun buy backs are dumb. They usually end up colleting guns that barley work and since guns are still being made its just a suck up PR at best.

There could be profit if you can pick up some jennings or lorcin cheapo pistols for $50 or so, and take them for the gun buybacks. Then with the money you get from the gun buybacks, you can buy yourself a nice AR or something.

Too bad they are just Ralphs gift cards though. The buybacks where they pay cash are the ones to cash in on.

I only paid $250 for it 20 years ago. I can't legally sell it because you cannot legally buy them anymore in CA so this might be a good way to get rid of it.

I just slightly kinda feel sorry for the guy that turned in the :

The chief pointed to one German-made World War II-era assault rifle, calling it the "grandaddy of all assault weapons" worth "well over" $15,000

Only guns that get sold at buy backs are broken and stolen. The few working guns traded are those that granddad left in the closet when he passed and the like. The PR stunt that does nothing to improve safety.

They seem to have a few AK clones in that photo in the LA Times and I can assure you that the one I'm thinking of unloading (no pun intended) is in perfect working order and it isn't stolen. It also isn't going to increase the safety in my home because it will leave behind 12 other perfectly functional guns.

Anyway, this thread isn't about the effectiveness of gun buybacks on public safety. It's about whether or not it makes sense for me to sell a cheap AK clone I own next time they run one of these boondoggles.

Probably more trouble than it's worth. How much do these things sell for these days anyway?

There's probably something desirable about them I found a few on gun broker. Here's an example Link granted that has original box but still. And on the subject of your post... I remember you said you used to live in Buffalo, were you around for our buybacks? That's a useless pr stunt, every year on the news you see they hauled off non working crap.

So what have the Australian laws actually done for homicide and suicide rates? Howard cites a study (pdf) by Andrew Leigh of Australian National University and Christine Neill of Wilfrid Laurier University finding that the firearm homicide rate fell by 59 percent, and the firearm suicide rate fell by 65 percent, in the decade after the law was introduced, without a parallel increase in non-firearm homicides and suicides. That provides strong circumstantial evidence for the law's effectiveness.

The paper also estimated that buying back 3,500 guns per 100,000 people results in a 35 to 50 percent decline in the homicide rate, but because of the low number of homicides in Australia normally, this finding isn't statistically significant.

I used to live in Rochester but I've spent some time in Buffalo. Never owned any guns while I lived in NY though.

Go BILLS!

Edit-That is the exact gun I own although I don't have the styrofoam packaging it came in anymore and I've modified the piece of wood a bit and I've lost the plastic bottles, I still have the 5 cent sling though. Can't imagine there is any reason any of that crap would decrease the value. It was worthless crap to begin with. The only thing worth a damn was the metal bits and they are in excellent condition.

It's not useless if it puts $200 in my pocket. This is a gun I cannot transfer legally to another person in the state I live in. Not sure about interstate laws as I haven't looked into that. Traveling out of state to try and sell it or shipping it might introduce other legal ramifications I may not want to deal with.

I know the one in Seattle had tons of people picking up nice guns for great deals. Screw a 200 dollar gift card, huge line (sit in line for them to run out of giftcards too lol) when you can sell it (legally) for 250-300. Its a good way for people who inherited grandpas guns or something to quickly dispose of them. But i also laugh at those people cause 10 muntes of research online could have often times gotten them double.

Also it cost the City of Seattle 38k in a lawsuit, plus at least 10 police officers wages (and overtime), for all of 700 guns. Yup that 50k+ gun buy back was totally worth 700 guns

They bought a PEN GUN? For $200?

Damn, next time I hear about one of these things, I'm gonna make a bunch of bogus guns (no functional firing pins lol) and go trade them in I have access to a good machine shop, I've actually made a really cool 303 from spare crap before, accurate enough to shoot out to 400 meters within a 3" spread. However, reloading took like 1-2 minutes hahah (breech loader design).

Jules if you never registered it just sell it to a friend. "Assault weapon" bans are feel-good libtard bs that accomplishes nothing.

I went to one that the cops were having in front of a Wal-Mart. $200 no questions asked for a rifle or pistol. I was going to turn in a old piece of crap 22 rifle that would often jamb when fired, take the $200 and buy a new 22 rifle @Wal-Mart since I was already there. I arrived 30 minutes after it started and they were already out of the allotted 10,000. I looked at the guns that had bought back and every one of them was a piece of crap like I was going to turn in. It looked like some of the people selling guns were pawn shop owners unloading worthless pawn shop inventory.

The non-firearm homicide rate also dropped by 59%--exactly the same amount as the firearm homicide rate. Funny how the Washington Post "forgot" to mention that.

Gosh that is so retarded. What a terrible waste of money. Most of these guns are ones that the owner just doesn't give a damn about at all anymore, not the illegal kind that you actually want off the streets.

I'd never do a gun buy back unless the city gave me cash money for more than what my gun is worth. And if they did, I'd just go buy another one and keep the profit.

As long as I lock my home and my guns up.. They are in minimal danger from being in the hands of criminals (which is the point of these buybacks... right?? )

PM me a picture. I'll buy it. You can ship it to my FFL. $300 plus actually shipping costs, pending review of pictures.

Edit: Assuming it's legal for you to sell out of state.

Sounds about right. Feel-good smoke and mirrors that accomplishes nothing.

I've also seen stories in the news where some FFL licensed shops and collectors set up outside, offering appraisals and, when appropriate, offering to buy at closer to market value than the flat rate the police were giving.

Most AKs will go for $350-450 around here in used condition. The Semi AK47s are typically the romanian/chinese ones that get shipped over after getting replaced in service and are alright for range shooting. They occasionally require a little tuning/gunsmithing to work the kinks out of them.

You could probably find someone willing to pay at least that. If you plan on going out of state in the next couple of years, take your rifle with you and hit a pawn shop to see if you can get close to $300-350 for it. You'll likely give them enough markup to ask $500+ for it and have a display piece for their store.
