Gun enthusiasts, please help

I'm looking into getting a new range rifle. Preferably I'd like something bolt-action that fires a .308 Winchester as I will be deer hunting with it too. If you could recommend me some decent rifles, or point me to a good gun forum, I would be much obliged.

When you have to escape from wolfenstein one of the nazi's drops a bolt action something or other, it is the same as the sniper rifle without the scope.

A Remington Model 700 or the comparable Ruger (can't remember the model number) are both nice shooters, easily accessorized, and have a variety of price points depending on which stock (wood / laminate, etc), finish, etc.

Both are very sturdy and age well.

The basic mechanics are the same.

The Ruger is an excellent piece too, give it a look. I actually like the trigger pull of the Ruger (nice and crisp) over the Rem.

I'll throw a nod to the Weatherby Mark V line. Anywhere from $400 to $1500. I'm kind of biased as I have an Orion SSC over under and love it. They aren't extremely common around here like the Rem 700s are. The 700s are great, but I just like something a little different.

Browning A-bolts are nice, I would also second the Ruger M77 bolts and the Remington 700's.

The Ruger Ranch rifle is a semi auto, and not a .308. I Have a Mini-14 (non Ranch model) it's ok for varmints at close range, I don't use it often tho. I use my Rem 788 .22-250 for any serious varmint hunting.

.270 would be decent, I have a .280 Rem in a Remington 7400 that I use for deer.

A .308 winchester is a great round for accuracy and it can drop a decent sized animal from a good ways off. If you have a good amount of money to spend i would reccomend a Weatherby, they can be a bit more, but are great guns. Ifyou do not want to spend much then i would recomend a remington or Winchester. base models of both of those offer good performance, while giving you a proven firearm. If you want to customize your rifle, you should really consider a Remington 700. a great action that has alot of stuff you can buy to put on it. if you want optics i would say go for a Leupold or for less dinero go for a Nikon Buckmaster. hope this helps.

Not to be forgotten are the Tikka T3's for a cheaper rifle, or a Sako which will get you up to Weatherby prices both have typical out of the box accuracy.
Savage is your best bang for buck basic rifle with a clip, if you can live without a clip a Rem 700 ADL from Walmart can be got dirt cheap too
and if your interested in customizing would be the best action to fool around with.
Stay away from the Rem 710
But since the 308 has been around since 55 there are LOTS of good quality used guns to buy and since its a little newer you don't have to worry about
the steel put into the barrel. If you get a scope get a good one, cheap ones bust apart from recoil and have a hard time sitting on zero.
A nice Weaver Grand Slam or Leupold vari-XI would a good place to start. . .

I woyld say to try out a Savage Model 110. I have one in .223 and love it. My brother has a 30.06 and loves it. The .308 variant is a tack driver as well from the reviews I have read.

The model 70 is a great gun. I have a bolt with a 30-06, and my dad has a 22-250. the 22-250 round is more for target shooting and varment. The 30-06 is great for deer but some would say its alittle much for target shooting.

Ruger bolt actions are not 'ranch rifles' you are thinking about the Mini-30 or the Mini-14, which are semi-auto.

I have a Ruger M77 bolt .30-06. From a bench, I can put three rounds on a quarter with factory ammo. Maybe I just got lucky with this rifle, but others I know have similar good things to say. I like the rotary safety on the Ruger better than the Remington, but its a personal preference. Go with what feels good.

I have a Ruger M77 .270. It's a great gun and shoots very well, I'd reccommend. I've actually herd stuff about the 700's mis-firing, but this could be a rumor.

The venerable 700 is a great rifle that can be tweaked to no end. Most of the rumored "problems" are a result of improperly performed trigger jobs. You don't do adjustments on the sear with a Dremel tool.

Weatherby or Sako if money is not tight. Both make excellent bolt action rifles.

I have a Winchester rifle chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. It really hits your shoulder hard but it is quite a flat shooter and capable of stopping any game on this continent.

Hey 308 I think Every police sniper rifle is built around the 700 action. Not much factory left once they have worked on it but hey its still says
Remmington.
Trigger is one of the reasons I suggested a Tikka T3 they have a user adjustable trigger that you can set your self as to how many pounds you want it to break at, which is what a target shooter need.
Don't second guess your choice of caliber the 308 is a bona fide all around contender for everything in the lower 48.
It also has the advantage of CHEAP milsurp ammo for practice of which 30-06 supply is drying up.
You will never have trouble selling it or finding ammo for it. Its recoil isn't punishing and is an extremely effcient case design and can make for a lighter short action rifle, if you choose to go that way. . .

If I were spending my own money on a bolt gun, it would be on a Savage 10FP, but it may be a little heavy for lugging around the woods looking for deer. I don't hunt, so that wouldn't matter to me, but it might to you.
