This thread is a tad too long. anyway...

My dad is a hunter. He has a dozen shotguns and one handgun. All of his guns and ammo were in the same area and easily accessible. My father has only shot animals for food. His handgun is for protection inside the home. He has never had to point the gun at another human. He is a member of the NRA.

My stepdad is a disabled Vietnam Vet. He has several handguns and rifles. He even owns a semi-automatic machine gun. He is an avid gun collector and a proud member of the NRA.

I am not a gun collector. When I was 16-19, I went hunting with my dad. I would visit my stepdad and shoot his rifles in the countryside. I have been around guns all my life and I have never played with a gun or pointed a gun a person. I was taught that if I did these things, I would have my ass whipped beyond recognition. I have never shot anyone, nor have I pointed a gun at anyone. period.

The point is that my dad(s) taught me how to be responsible with guns. They are responsible with their guns. As many people have pointed out, guns dont kill people; people kill people.

The responsibility of gun safety is in the hands of parents. Parents hold the key in controlling their children. My parents told me what to do, grounded me, spanked me, and taught me right from wrong. Nowadays, kids run wild. Parents have no control. I work graveyards and constantly see YOUNG children wandering the streets at 3A.M.

Place the blame where it belongs. Quit blaming movies, music, video games, TV, books, magazines, and any other medium. Taking away our guns is NOT a viable option. Criminals and cops are the only ones that will have the guns.

When the government starts trying to take away guns(I doubt it will ever happen in the US), Civil War 2 will begin.

everything you say it true. instead of blaming the person that actually commits the crime democrats blame society or, depending on what day it is, they'll blame it on some made up psychological disorder. and whats sad is they apply this screwed up logic to just about everyting. ask a democrat why minorities score lower than whites in standardized tests and theyll tell you minorities are being held back or the test favors whites, not that the difference is a direct result of hard work and discipline. its always somebody elses fault if your a democrat.

hmmmm
your post was making some sense til this

you're right; don't blame guns
but if you don't go straight to the sources of what is causing our society to be more violent, then you are not looking in the right direction, either

What are you talking about? In the news all the time everyone uses these as a scapegoat instead of looking at the real problem: the parents.

These damn parents need to start being responsible.

Agree with Red on this one... although quite a large portion of the positions held by the modern Democratic Party are ones i disagree with, i don't blame the people who hold these beliefs for the ills of our society. I even give the Dems/Liberal folks credit when they identify and attempt to address an issue which other groups have overlooked or don't feel comfortable talking about.

As with everything, there are opportunists in the Democratic Party, who care more about their own welfare more than the well-being of others. Still, i feel that the vast majority of liberals and Democrats are honest and well-meaning people, who hold their beliefs and support policies which they believe to be the right thing to do.
That doesn't mean i agree with their conclusions or proposed policies, but i don't demonize them as the root of all bad things in our society.

I may often disagree with RedDawn on political and other issues, but i know he's a honest and moral man. I would trust him completely to "watch my back," to use the cliche. Perhaps someday he'll even realize the error of his ways and become a born again Libertarian

I have one question...

if so many people own guns just for "protection," how useful are they if you have to lock them up in a safe and also use a trigger lock. if someone busts into your home, armed with a gun, you won't have time to unlock the safe, unlock the trigger, and (possibly) load the thing?

I think anyone who really DOES use them for protection would keep them in their bedroom at the bottom of a sock drawer or something. This is where the kids find them and use them. Now if everyone locked them up properly, there would be fewer deaths. But then, where is your protection?

conclusions: guns, other than for hunting or target practice, are useless. IMO.

Dedpuhl,

you're partly right, parents DO need to be more responsible

but, if you remember your youth (I haven't a clue what your age is), as I remember my youth, then you would agree that your friends and the music and shows you attended to had as much, if not more, affect on you than your parents.

I had great parents, and they had a great influence on me.
But during my teen years, I gravitated away from my parent's control, and gained independence and autonomy, with a great influence from the environment outside my home.

If you think MTV et. al. don't have a significant impact on the values of kids, you're never gonna get the full picture.
