We have the winning answer here, folks.

How in the world are you supposed to maintain a firearm that is easily accessible for self defense purposes, while at the same time keeping ut out of the hands of your child or his curious friends as he grows up? Is there a technology solution, a training solution with the child, combination of both? For those with firearms and children, what is your take?

He's 15 Mo.

Keep it out of his reach where only you can get to it.

I grew up with plenty of unlocked guns easily accessible. I wouldn't dare touch them without permission though. That is where training comes in. You need to involve him (obviously not at this stage of his life) and teach respect and proper gun safety.

I was reloading 12 guage shells by the time I was in like 2nd grade.

With proper upbringing it will not be a problem.

Teaching your children about guns is probably the best way to prevent them from playing with a gun if they find one. The problem is that your child's friends might have parent's that are anti gun and wouldn't even let their child touch a toy gun. If one of these children happen to pick up your gun, then the chances of something bad happening go way up.

So accidental child deaths from guns come more from children of anti-gun homes rather than homes where people own guns? I think you better check the numbers on that one.

I had a zillion toy guns as a kid, but no real guns in the house. I was never taught "gun safety" by my folks other than common sense I might have learned on 90210 (don't twirl a gun around on your finger or, shocker, it might go off). I think my chances of getting shot were a bit lower than if a real gun were in the house.

My friends and I actually owned our own guns by the time we were 12. We are all still alive.

Good parenting does wonders.

My parents would never ever let me have a toy gun. Not even a BB gun.

But they were not anti-gun at all. They just didn't want me to ever think about a gun as a "toy".

I think that is the best method really.

No, accidental deaths from guns come more from children that are not educated properly. I, like many of these other posters, knew where the guns were. I also knew that I didn't have to go play with them since my Dad and I would go shoot them often. I also knew that if I did touch the gun alone/unsupervised I would get my ass whooped.

Problems happen with some guy keeps a gun around but doesn't educate his kids and then they find it on accident and think it's cool so they play with it. They don't know how to unload or make sure there isn't a bullet in the chamber and they accidentally shoot someone. Look up the accidental shooting and you will see how many of these kids were showing their friend something cool or a similar situation.

Kids shooting each other with their parents guns happen very rarely -- within a single year, I think only about 5 kids out of millions harm themselves with firearms. NOW gangbangers who steal their parents guns who are over 15.. now thats a problem. for some reason, most statics count these teenage gangbangers as "kids" which is incorrect.
