I'm been contemplating getting a gun lately. I'm wondering, what is a cheap gun type you can get that doesn't take a ton of permits/paperwork or wait time? Basically something that doesn't have a ton of "hoops" to jump through. I'm not a major gun nut or anything, so please forgive my ignorance. Any help would be appreciated.

What city/state are you calling from?
Chicago is very different than Texas.

Regardless, the easiest way to get a handgun, is to go to a local gunshow.
Pay with cash from a private seller. Dealers require paperwork.
Party to party sales are legal and do not require any paperwork in most areas.

It would to know what state you live in. Some have a waiting period. What kind of gun did you have in mind? handgun, shotgun, caliber?

I'm been contemplating getting a gun lately, not for suicide or anything, but for self defense. all firearms require the same amount of paperwork. except those made before 1898, but then you aren't using them for self defense, or much of anything else.

also, wtf is up with clarifying this isn't for suicide? why would you even mention that unless you have a history of posting about it on here (not familiar with you). That just sends up red flags immediately along not wanting to "jump through hoops".

This is completely untrue for California.

Buy a Ruger SR9 or SR9C or a Glock model 17 or 19. Buy ammo, a range bag, shooting glasses, ear muffs, a magazine loader, a baseball cap and a gun case with a lock. Go to the range and practice with it. You might also want to pick up a LEATHER holster.

You're not ready for a gun if you think you need to stipulate it's not to commit suicide with. It just shows a lack of understanding of how serious the responsibility of gun ownership is.

Also, buy a security system for your house first. Then make sure all your doors and windows have good locks on them. Practice common sense personal security measures both when home and away until they become habit.

Until you do those things you don't need a gun.

Ok people... poor choice of words on my part. I'm definitely not doing anything nutty with it. And no, this post isn't intended as being one of my parodies. I'm really just interested in getting into guns. I see gun topics around here all the time, I would think the local ATOT militia would be glad to add another among their ranks.

The best thing for you to do is go to a gun range that rents guns. They should have someone there that will show you how things work, will answer all the questions you need for your state and you ask them about gun safety classes.

You really need to shoot and find one that feels good before dropping a few bills on one.

False. Select fire firearms require different forms and taxes, as well as some localities making their own additional forms that need to be filled out.

Long guns in CA require valid CA photo ID.

Handguns in CA require 2 forms of CA government issued ID such as photo ID + dmv car registration.

NY isn't really a gun friendly state either, I'm sure it has hilarious hoops to jump through outside of NYC. And inside NYC, "good f'ing luck" is what I hear the most.

In general long guns are easier/less paperwork than handguns. A good old fashion 12ga or .22 rifle are always good options.

I can't say for NY but rifles and shotguns have less paperwork possibly and possibly less waiting periods as well. Try buying and good AR15 rifle. If you want a shotgun try a 20 gauge. Handguns REQUIRE waiting periods and more paperwork in some places.

New York state

You're screwed, especially for a handgun

I don't even bother knowing the laws in NY because they're so much more strict than most of the country. For example, it's apparently illegal to let anybody else shoot your weapon in NY? I'm not sure if that's just non-resident or something, but my dad went back to NY to visit family and he couldn't legally use a lot of their stuff.

Yeah I heard New York was strict but I thought that itwas just New York city that had the really strict regulations.

I didn't know the state was as strict (in some cases maybe stricter) than CA.

NY has some of the most ridiculous gun laws in the nation. Glad I don't live there anymore. At least I can still buy and own handguns in CA without begging for police approval first.

One thing I don't agree with is states allowing private party transfers with no paperwork necessary. This is just insanely stupid. You have to submit to a background check to buy a new gun but if you go over here on a Saturday this guy will sell you a "used" gun with no background check or paperwork whatsoever. Makes no sense at all.

I think that taking down a burglar with musket fire would be awesome!

NY requires a permit to own a pistol. In NYC, you're pretty well screwed, if you want to keep it legal (unless you're a cop).
Suggest you go buy an inexpensive 12 gauge pump shotgun. For home protection, it's pretty much all you'll need. With a 20" barrel, and a full stock with sling, you can easily turn corners with it, but bring it to bear on any intruders easily......and with double-aught buckshot, you'll make them wish they'd gone somewhere else!
