There was a thread about them not long ago, dealt mostly with SKS rifles though, but I can't find it now.

Anyway, there's one coming up in about 2 weeks and I was thinking about going. I've been looking at a Springfield XD 9mm lately. Although, I've been looking at a lot of stuff, mostly older guns, like Lee-Enfields from WWII.

Would it be smart to buy a new gun like the XD from a gun show or should I stay with a local dealer? Local dealer has them for about $420. I really want to shoot my dad's XD but I don't know when I can do it. I've held it, and it seemed to fit nice.

Any other pieces of advice or suggestions if I do decide to go?

i didn't really see anything that special about it. maybe i won't be getting one of these after all.

I was at one a couple months ago and those were available. Many of the dealers of new guns have local stores. Basically, you can save money (due to different taxes) by purchasing at the show.

Most of the gun shows around here are only good for disgusting jerky and beanie babies. Everything is overpriced at every one I have ever been to. Unless you find a used XD there, I bet you can save a lot of money getting a new one from CDNN or the like. People want way too much for their guns at gunshows, for the most part.

I'll agree with the "Gun shows are overpriced" thoughts. Milsurp stuff is generally more expensive than what you'd find online.

Sometimes you can get decent deals on ammo. I haven't seen a good deal on a gun in some time though.

You'll love the XD I think. I just got an XD45 and shot the best I've ever shot in our action pistol league the first time I used it last night. So nice. I'm seriously considering a compact XD45 for CCW.

anyone know anything or hear anything about the Taurus PT 24/7 pro?
I have a Taurus PT99 and I love that thing so I'm not a stranger to Taurus.

You looking for a gun to shoot for fun or to carry? If its a carry weapon then I suggest you think about something a bit more powerful than a 9mm. .40 doesn't recoil that much more, has almost the capacity and MUCH more knockdown power.

Whereas if you just shooting for fun a 9mm is a blast.

possibly both.
well gee, why stop at .40? why not go .45? I really don't want to start another "this caliber is better than that caliber" argument as they've been done to death and the concensus is that 9mm is plenty. I've even read that 9mm HP are pretty close to a .40 anyway. 9mm is enough for me. that being said, i bought a bersa thunder .380 for carry a while back.

i've got a .380, a 9mm, a .45 and a .22. i really don't want to add another ammo type to that list as ammo is already expensive as it is anyway.

Look into a police trade-in sig, they can be had for fairly cheap.

You could also do it right from the beginning and get a springfield armory Mil-Spec or Loaded 1911a1

If you were not impressed with the XD, than you are not going to be impressed with a Glock.

Smith & Wesson's M&P line of auto pistols are very nice as well.

Considering the minimal difference in mass between a 9mm and .40, shot placement is how you achieve stopping power, not the round itself. If you are worried about penetration, carry higher velocity 9mm ammunition (+P, +P+).

I will never understand why people think less than five hundreths of an inch suddenly makes it a sledgehammer.

Pontifex: Check out CZs if you are looking for bang for buck. You can usually get a pretty good deal on a CZ-75B. You may also want to check out the CZ-75B SP01, if you are looking for more features/higher capacity. The CZ-85B combat is also a very nice handgun, closer to the trigger pull of the original CZ-75's, but are usually a bit more expensive.

Then you need someone to teach you how to shoot it then. A friend of mine shoots competition with 1911 variants and one day at the range with him changed my ability with one completely.

The deal with gun shows, IMHO, is you have to know both what you want, and what it is worth. Good deals can be found if you are a discriminating buyer and are patient enough to browse through everything.

the CZ-P01 definitely looks sexy! man...now i've got a bit of a decision to make. the cz is definitely a contender after reading some reviews. i can't really find a 24/7 pro review by a gun mag or professional. everything is on forums, but this gun looks and sounds really nice too.

holy ******! looks like the 24/7 pro 9mm sells for about $360!
If the CZ P-01 sells for close to that price I may end up buying both!

If you want a 1911 style pistol, look at the Kimbers. I love mine. Otherwise, like someone mentioned before, the Smith and Wesson M&P line is very nice. I have the M&P .40 and it has been great. Also, check out the H&K's, they are pretty nice too.

In 9mm I would get a Glock just because of the 33rnd magazine availability.

XD45s > Glocks in 45 though.

On that note 9mm = fun plinker. 45 = carry weapon.

Its been quite a while since I looked up the stats on bullets but from what I remember of the FBI study its not the five hundredths of an inch that makes the difference. Its the fact that a 180gr JHP .40 has a third more mass than a 124 gr. JHP 9mm (both the most common bullet weights at the time) and both bullets travel at close to the same velocity. More mass at the same velocity should equal more energy transfered to the target if the bullet does not travel completely through the target.

At the range we play a game in the training range when. We set up a table down range and put a dozen bowling pins on it. Two shooters stand at the same distance and the goal is to shoot the six pins on your side off the table first. The pin must be knocked completely off the table and not just knocked over. With a .40 cal the pin will be knocked off the table with a single shot about 70% of the time. With a 9mm it will be knocked off the table about with a single shot about 20% of the time. Shot placement does count for a lot but in my real world observations it seems the .40 transfers a good deal more energy to the target.
