I live right at Jane and Finch in Toronto, for anyone who doesn't know it is pretty much the worst part of the city. There have been constant gun problems there.

So, you may have heard that on boxing day 2 groups of teenagers all wielding pistols (a total of 15 of them) began shooting at each other in the downtown core. Not one of them hit their intended target, the only people shot are believed to be innocent by-standers, one of which was a young girl who has died.

Story

My question is this: Is there anything that can be done to help stop this gaining gun violence?

Paul martin has promised to band handguns, but that won't be effective at stopping anything. I don't see anyway out of this sort of thing. The idiots could atleast learn to aim, so they would shoot and kill each other instead of innocent peeps.

Someone has to find a reliable way to stop the black market for weapons. Banning handguns won't do anything, but the current systems in the US and Canada clearly aren't working either. Unfortunately gun control is such a divisive issue with neither side telling much of anything resembling truth that the necessary compromise to make guns safer is not within sight.

I agree completely, gun laws don't work. So what could be the solution?

I remember hearing about one man running for office in Mississauga (also toronto) who wanted to make it legal for police to randomly stop young black men and search them for guns in North York (where I live, gun capitol). He was black himself, and I thought how ridiculous it was. But who knows what it would do.

Luckily for me, all of the gun violence in my area has been gang related, and there haven't been many innocent bystanders who have fallen victim, but still.

Stopping just black people wont help. More of a police presence will help I know that. But i cant honestly think of anything that would completely stop it. For instance I live in Omaha, Ne which isn't too bad of a town but on the northside where i live we have a corner thats notorious for shootings. Well it used to be. Got so bad there were 4-6 fatal shooting a week a few yrs ago during the summer at that intersection. So a police station was put up right next to the worst gas station and shootings have definately decreased. Dont get me wrong theres still 2-3 a month during the summer but thats alot better than it was.

Allow more citizens to carry concealed weapons. That is a solution that has always quickly put down crime. People don't like the taste of vigilantiism when they find out its one of their own bad seeds from their family that dumbass just got blasted while they were half cocked on dope and did something stupid. Then again they don't like it when the cops do the same thing. Perhaps you should take a lesson that Tom Cruise movie which name escapes me at this moment.

Actually, positive. Would you want to mug someone knowing that theres a good chance that they'll be armed?

You think it's bad with handguns? Wait until they get their hands on illegal automatic weapons, and start doing the "spray and pray" method of gangland shootings!

Gun control doesn't work. Period. All it would do is take any weapons out of the hands of legal citizens, and do nothing to take guns away from the criminals that cause the problem in the first place. Larger police presence, concealed carry laws, and education of the innocent civilians will all help (teach 'em how to notice impending trouble, in hopes they'll know better when to clear the streets). Some would say that stiffer sentences for offenders would help, but all that does (imho) is to concentrate all the bad guys in one place, where they can wait until they're free again.

We have created an empty civilization of greed and competition and now, in loving imitation, our children are reflecting it back to us. There is nothing quite like meeting yourself in the next generation.

The Universe has a deep sense of humor. All its faults begin and end in you.

In short, there is everything in the world we CAN do but nothing at all we WILL do.

Banning guns won't do anything.

What you have to go after are the reasons why these shootings happen. The youth culture right now is fascinated with the "gangsta" lifestyle. They hear that being outside the law, on the street, killing people for money, and selling drugs is cool. I think this is one case where there is no doubt that entertainment has come to life.

Nothing can be done. When a group of people start shooting at each other, the only thing you can do is pray and duck. The gun problem will never be solved because we aren't civilized in the US. People start pulling guns out on other people over the dumbest things. At least you can flip someone off in Europe without the fear of being shot at. You imagine how bad the problem would have been in France during the riots if handguns were legal? I don't even want to think about it. Fortunately for the US, we have done an excellent job of keep most gun violence in certain neighborhoods.

Fortunate? I don't think that fortunate at all. Its not like the people have the financial means to just move away from the violence.

Huge. But the drug problem is just another symptom of the societal problem, which has proven all but intractable all these years. It is very, very sad, and frustrating, sub-cultures that all but guarantee failure and all.

To the US haters: the OP is talking about the gun problem in Canada, not the US. I know, I know... Michael Moore told you there's no crime in Canada... well, guess what? he lied.

I'd shoot first and and ask questions later.

See, but you dont have the criminal mind of a street thug. They are out for easy money, not murder or a gunfight.

There are a few sickos that are out just to kill, but they'd shoot you regardless of you being armed. And at least you could fight back.

I live pretty close to Toronto. (Brampton) All I hear on the news is about "A SHOOTING AT JANE AND FINCH INJURES ONE AND KILLS "so and so") IMO, banning handguns won't do anything because they are banned now as far as I know. The people that have them are just breaking the law. Even if Paul Martin does something about banning handguns, guess what's going to happen? Shotguns.

Do what Chris Rock suggested in his HBO special, charge $5000 for a bullet!

No more random shootings!
