We do have CCL here, but lots of businesses have signs that prohibit carrying. Dunno if the mall has them or not.

Carrying on private property that forbids carrying is not illegal. They can ask you to leave, but the law doesn't care.

The Westroads Mall does not have a policy against concealed weapons, or the legal sign required to be posted in order to prohibit CCL holders from carrying there.

Still, Nebraska only got CCL as of Jan 1 2007, so there aren't very many yet. Plus, odds are if you started shooting up a mall in Texas, no one is going to shoot back. Only 1% of the population has a CHL.

You should read about Mark Allen Wilson, who no doubt saved quite a few lives drawing fire from a gunman in Tyler, Texas. Not saying you are wrong about the mall scene but I do believe you underestimate responsible CCL holders in Texas.

I'm familiar with the story. A courageous man, but perhaps a little foolhardy. He left half a dozen deer rifles in his apartment when he saw the gunman killing people downstairs, and instead grabbed his 1911 .45 and went downstairs to try to end things. He could have made all the difference in the world if he would have dropped the gunman from his apt with a 30-06. Instead he got himself killed and didn't take out the gunman.

I'm not putting down CHL holders in Texas at all. I've had my CHL since 1995 when we were first allowed to, and I carried illegally before that. I know that a good guy with a gun can make all the difference. Though I keep an FN FAL mounted in my trunk with an Interceptor, just in case.

Oh, and I don't carry all the time. Only when I'm wearing pants.

Are you carrying right now?

hope they give that guy the chair.

The kid is WHITE - I think you were trying to incite some racial hatred. Too bad you fail.

Dude settle down. Something earlier said it was a 42 year old Sudanese man. news reports are shit the first few hours.

Still makes the OP look like a fool. Race should play no factor when it comes to talking about something like this.

It adds nothing to the discussion and only adds fuel for flaming.

You are so right! I wouldn't care if it was a yellow woman, guy, or kid shooting up the place. No matter who it is they should get life in jail or the chair. I see all humans having no more robbers and people who shoot up places more than any others. All the robbers and people who shoot up places all even out in the end so it doesn't matter what the person is we just jknow they are a human being and thats all that matters.

This guy should have got the chair..... slowly. Too bad he was a big coward and killed himself after 'going out in style'. What a loser.

The story basically is that Robert Hawkins got canned from his job yesterday and that set him off.

Background: This Robert Hawkins kid grew up in a dysfunctional household and dropped out of high school two years ago. (Actually they tell kids in that particular high school they cannot be there any more and give them a paper to sign, which the kid unknowingly is opting out of the high school. Its underhanded and quite frankly unfair to troubled kids.) The kid had emancipated himself and lived with various friends but kept trying apparently to settle back home. Each time his emotional instability would get the best of him and he'd move back out or get plain kicked out. This last time he moved into the home of a friend who's mom and dad thought they could help him out by giving him some stability.

The emotionally dysfunctional kid informed this lady's kid he got fired from McDonald's over filthering $17 and he then told his mother. The boy had obviously been planning this murderous act because he got his rifle out and took it to his vehicle that night. The mother tried to sit him down but he did not want to talk about it. He called her by phone the next day, today, but she could not understand what he was saying. He told her he left a note for her in his bedroom. One of the last things he told her was that its just too late. With that he thanked her for everything she had done for him and for some odd reason apologized to her before he hung up. Apparently he left a note at the house explaining his anger about being a nobody and how he was going out in style; the woman called his mother about the note. The shooter's mother retrieved the note and immediately took it to the local police department. It sounds pretty clear everyone's done everything they can to help authorities investigate this troubled kid.

There were quite a few witnesses to the shootings. Some people dove into clothes racks. Others simply ran to the exits. Many people survived in proximty of the shooter because of Von Maur's violence in the workplace training; employees and customers directed panicked people into dressing rooms and barricaded themselves in. The cops were in the store within six minutes - which is forty-six minutes quicker than normal around Omaha - and by that time he'd already committed suicide. The television here has been nonstop coverage of the event and they are really pouring over this kid's life.

Two ironies of this story:

1. The lady that allowed him into her home is a surgical nurse and victims came into her hospital.
2. The president was in town all morning and had just left a little while before it all happened.

Doh, events like these really sadden me. The worst part (besides the deaths of 8 innocent people, of course) is that a family was trying to help him straighten his life out, and yet the guy made this decision anyway. I happen to be doing a lot of reading on reincarnation at the moment, so I'll take consolation in the fact that the victims might get another life.

While I agree that someone carrying a concealed weapon could have helped mitigate the loss of life in this situation, doesn't this mall have security? If so, do these security guards not carry guns? Or are they not supposed to go after gunmen? Either way, stories like these tempt me to look into getting a CCL when I get out of school...

Very few malls even allow pepper spray. Security guards are NOT cops. They are paid a bit above minimum wage around here. Lots of liability otherwise. They handle shoplifters, not gunmen.

I use to have to either go outside into the real world, or watch TV to get my dose of racism, but I can get all I need here. I love ATOT.

Nebraska does have concealed weapons laws. And in a situation like this, where the shooter had a SKS and was firing from above through some large open areas, a hand gun wont do much good in any but the best trained hands.

What a sad story, go to the mall with a loaded credit card and get shot down at the escalator.

Everything I have read (including the wiki) mentions nothing about him going back to his apt them coming out with only his pistol. My understanding is that he saw the initial shooting then drew. He hit the guy once, then took cover. Then he hit the guy AGAIN. Unfortunately the gunman was wearing a vest and came after him.

Just took a few more minutes and some sources do say Wilson was in his apt at the time with a clear view of what was going on. I can't confirm either way.

Regardless, I find it in poor taste to call someone "foolhardy" when their bravery and quick action saved numerous lives. If he had stayed in his apt and failed to kill the gunman with a rifle would he have attracted the same attention or would the gunman have moved back to his son and the cops he had aleady started on? I would venture to say at the very least Wilson saved the son and 2 cops lives, probably more. Please don't taint the memory of a hero.

This is sad. What I don't get is why the losers like this guy don't just kill themselves and be done with it. Why do they have to kill other innocent people. Guess that is only way they can be "somebody". I am afraid this won't be the last.

Probably revenge on society, who they either blame for their position, or whom they envy and hate for not being in their position.

It's the entitlement generation.... "society OWES me!!!" In this case society would have owed him a curb stomp if he wasn't such a coward.

Territory, mating, . . . Lots of reasons for animals to kill their own kind. I can't think of any off the top of my head that do it for no purpose.

the law doesn't care until the store asks you to leave and you don't and they call the police for trespassing.
