I just got a 12 gauge 870 Express Tactical as my first shotgun to mess around with - target shooting and home defense. I'm thinking about getting a pistol grip to shorten it up for home defense. Which mods would you suggest? Where should I go for cheap ammo to get a good feel for the gun?

The shoulder stock puts the gun on a much more stable platform for aiming and recoil.

Why not?

And what about other mods and ammo?

what everyone else already said.

what other mods do you need/want? I don't really see any mods needed unless you want a sling and maybe a red dot sight. It's already got a 2 shot mag extension.

as for ammo, i dunno. i don't really shoot shotguns that much. I have some S&B and Winchester 00 buck for home defense. I bought some multipurpose loads (birdshot i think) from walmart. I think it was like 100 rds for $20. I think this is what it was: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Federal-Ammunition-12-Gauge-3-DRAM-100ct/17757345

Don't know about mods, but I've read over and over not to use pistol grips.

For cheap ammo, I'd say just go to Walmart and get some low brass loads for target practice.

make a bunch of wax slugs. they are fun to blast shit with and watch what ever it is you are shooting explode. Hard drives and pumpkins are my fav.

easy to make, just consult youtube.

Defense? Weapon mounted flashlight. Just say no to pistol grip on a pump shotgun, makes operating the action kludgy.

Get a tactical light. I got the Streamlight TLR-1S
You could get a sidesaddle to hold more shells
I would put a sling on it b/c it could get tangled in the dark with adrenaline flowing
If you go with pistol grip only, get a Hogue - http://www.amazon.com/Hogue-Shotgun-...ogue+grips+870
You could also try the Blackhawk Knoxx BreachersGrip that has a recoil compensation in it. It claims to reduce up to 65% of recoil and you could fire it one handed. I think you'd have to be Arnold in T2 to do it 1 handed though. - http://www.amazon.com/BLACKHAWK-KNOX...70+pistol+grip

Oh, and I'd love to get something like this for my Mossberg, maybe they make 1 for 870 too - http://www.amazon.com/BLACKHAWK-SpecOps-Adjustable-Shotgun-Forend/dp/B004T16JMY/ref=pd_sbs_sg_3

I put a shorter barrel on mine and found it perfect just with that.

I've got a few...

14" 870P with ghost rings, single point sling, +1 ext, Mesa Tactical AR15 stock adapter with recoil tube + sidesaddle, magpul CTR butt stock, MIAD grip, surefire 618LMG foreend.

Only downside to this is it's a heavy biatch.

18" 870 with single point sling, +2 ext, knoxx specops stock + powerpack, sidesaddle.

Downside... I don't really like the knoxx stock, it tends to slap you in the cheek.

Then I have a basic one with a speedfeed stock set, but I have a rifled barrel on it ATM.

Then I have another one that I think is just a dead stock 20" bbl or something.

Yup. Would keep a full stock on it, and go with a shorter barrel, to make it easier to go through the house with (narrower spaces, like hallways, where you might have to turn a corner, would be easier).

I bought my Mossberg 500 with the pistol grip already installed, and while the badass look is definitely there, I'm going to go back to a full stock, but leave the barrel at 18.5". Pretty sure you cannot go under 18" and still be legal, but check that info before you buy a shorter barrel for it (make sure your state doesn't want you to have something longer).

12 GA isn't the cheapest ammo all around, but you can find decent deals on 00 buck (I'd suggest firing at the range whatever you plan to use at home) online at various places. Check the usual suspects - Cabelas, Sportsmans Guide, ammunitiontogo, etc.

For defense, it's going to be hard beating either Federal LE12700 (full power), LE13200 (reduced recoil), or the Hornady TAP stuff. I have all three, and the results at the range are nasty.

agreed, after 10 rounds your wrist will not be too happy with you.

If you have to fire 10 shots in a home defense scenario, you've got worse problems with your wrist. Losing the stock and going with the shortest legal barrel will make the gun more maneuverable around corners in the house.

Shooting the weapon accurately will be very difficult without a stock not to mention aiming. Just a bad idea all around to not have the stock.

Shortest legal barrel around here is 18".

someone mentioned a flashlight, that might be good so you can see what you are aiming at.

i just don't see the point in adding all kinds of junk to a home defense shotgun.

It's a fashion statement for some people I guess. They have to make all their guns "tacticool" no matter if the added modifications have any practical use or not. I think it's dumb but to each his own.
