Well look at it this way, a minority of legally owned guns are for self defense. A majority of them are for hunting, and sport or collection. And guess what, those guns that are for sport, hunting collection etc are usually locked up for protection, esp. collections. So they are not a threat to be accidentally used by a kid, or used by a kid. ITs the ones that are kept for defense that are a risk, and even most of those well never be used in the commision of a crime. My personal view has and always will be that any use of a gun to kill someone was intentional. Accidents can all but be eliminated with proper storage and education.

Do you think the NRA is a bunch of gun nuts? They aren't nuts, in fact the NRA spends a huge amount of money on educating kids about the dangers of guns and the proper handling. If you train a kid to use a gun and handle it properly, they won't cause accidents, because they know what thier doing. If you expose kids to guns (not kids under 11 in my opinion) and get them used to them, they will have no novelty or interest in them except what they are intended for and will leave them alone. Its when the parents own a gun and keep some mysterious thing and tell the kids no to touch it that there is a problem. I mean if the parents keep it a mystery don't you think curiosity will draw the kids to it? So lets take thier curiosity away by answering thier questions and teaching them about it so they don't have to learn by accident.

I forced (yes, FORCED) my kids to go to the range when they were young (as in 6 years old) with me so they could feel the muzzle blast, have their hands bitten by the recoil, and observe for themselves what a firearm does.

Please allow me to bore you for a moment with my theory of the cookie jar.

If you place a cookie jar on top of the refrigerator, it becomes a forbidden (and hence, enticing) object of curiosity and desire. A child, being a child, will make every effort to gain access to this forbidden object, and being the clever little beasties they are (as I once was), they will eventually succeed in their endeavor (i.e., they will get into the cookies).

Place the cookie jar on the kitchen table and tell the child "Eat." "Now eat some more." "Keep eating." Eventually the child barfs up the cookies and has NO further use for them; indeed, they develope a positive AVERSION to the cookies.

And so I drag the unsuspecting offspring of mine to the range (with ear and eye protection, I don't want them getting hurt) and MAKE THEM SHOOT. And make them shoot. And make them shoot some more.

They got sick of it.

There were (and are) weapons of all sizes and descriptions scattered liberally about the house and they (the kids) have NO curiosity or foolish desires regarding said objects whatsoever. Kid proofing a gun is a pipe dream at best; gun proofing a kid is an achievable goal.

I expect to influence absolutely no one with this account of the raising of my youngsters. But those of you who are weapon phobic may wish to pause and give thought to the fact that there are ALTERNATIVE methods to your "One Size Fits All" approach to social engineering.

Warrenton,

NRA is one of the biggest advocates of gun control and have helped some of the most damaging legislation get through.

When they drop this silly, "enforce the laws we got on the books" idea and get will "repeal the laws we got on the books" then I may consider joining their ranks.

You can teach kids not to drink out of the toilet, then why can't parents teach kids not to touch guns unless under adult supervision.

No amount of legislation will cure lazy parenting.

Most people I know own at least one gun, and those who do are responsible gun owners. It's like anything else, common sense and responsibility is what it's all about.
